#DAKAR2022 – Stage 3 | AL QAISUMAH – AL QAISUMAH

Scritto martedì 4 Gennaio 2022 alle 13:04.

Moto: Stage 3 modificato

10:35 Moto: attenzione a Cornejo

08:45 Moto: Petrucci continua l’avventura!

07:53 Moto: Gelažninkas è ancora in testa

  • 12:04 Moto: A decent day for Van Beveren

Adrien Van Beveren may have finished in ninth place almost five minutes behind Joaquim Rodrigues, but the Yamaha rider has taken a leap forward in the overall classification to only four seconds behind Sam Sunderland, who finished 17th today.

  • 12:01 Moto: Only on the Dakar!

Daniel Sanders has revealed the reason for his drop down the stage classification on the last part of the stage: he stopped for several minutes to take a bite to eat!

  • 11:49 Moto: First victory for Rodrigues and Hero!

Daniel Sanders has been eagerly awaited at the finishing line to discover the outcome of this special, but in the end, he has dropped down into fifth position, almost three minutes behind Joaquim Rodrigues, who picks up his first success on the Dakar and also provides the Hero team with their first victory. Toby Price has completed the stage in second place, ahead of the incredible Mason Klein.

  • 11:20 Moto: Sanders gives himself breathing space

After 218 km, Daniel Sanders has opened a slight gap over Joaquim Rodrigues. The GasGas rider has a lead of 51’’ over the Hero team ride and an advantage of 1’40’’ over Skyler Howes’ Husqvarna. Will GasGas be celebrating a fourth consecutive victory?

  • 11:03 Moto: Rodrigues is first to the finishing line

Joaquim Rodrigues has posted the best time so far at the finishing line on the day’s special. Although the Hero team rider managed to overtake Skyler Howes after 218 km, Daniel Sanders has not yet passed the one before last time check, so the situation may yet evolve.

  • 10:52 Moto: Sanders is hanging on, but only just!

After 167 km, Daniel Sanders still leads, by Skyler Howes is only 11’’ behind his Australian rival. Joaquim Rodrigues occupies third place, 25’’ behind the current stage leader as the pursuit heats up!

  • 10:35 Moto: Beware of Cornejo

Nacho Cornejo is slowly but surely climbing back up the classification. The Chilean is taking advantage of the position he achieved yesterday and the tracks of his rivals to regain the time he has lost. After 126 km, he trails Daniel Sanders by 1’31’’ and is 31’’behind his nearest rival Toby Price.

  • 10:13 Moto: Howes and Rodrigues are closing in

While Daniel Sanders still boasts the best time after 126 km, Skyler Howes and Joaquim Rodrigues have regained 30’’ on him. Toby Price currently occupies fourth place, just one minute behind the GasGas’ current stage leader.

  • 10:06 Moto: Benavides now leads the way

Kevin Benavides, who finished third yesterday, has overtaken Joan Barreda on the route of the special and now the KTM rider is opening the way. Is this a deliberate strategy from Barreda, who had already lost 4’ at the first check point?

  • 09:39 Moto: Mason Klein is holding his own

Mason Klein, who is taking part in his first Dakar at the tender age of 20 years, is getting stuck into the contest with the leading lights of the category. At the first time check, the leader of the Rally2 category is in fifth place, 1’19’’ behind the stage leader and in front of none other than former winner Ricky Brabec…

  • 09:34 Moto: Sanders leads the pack

Daniel Sanders seems once again to be on top form. The Australian’s nearest pursuer is Joaquim Rodrigues, a little more than one minute behind, followed by 13 riders within the same one-minute time bracket. Matthias Walkner is the last of that bunch in 14th place, just ahead of Luciano Benavides, meaning the field is tightly packed behind current stage leader!

  • 09:10 Moto: Almost 4 minutes already lost for Barreda

Joan Barreda is struggling to open the way today! Although Joaquim Rodrigues led for a short moment just one second ahead of Toby Price, Daniel Sanders has now moved into the lead. The Australian is 3’51” ahead of Barreda.

  • 08:45 Moto: Petrucci continues the adventure!

Yesterday, Danilo Petrucci had to come to terms with dropping out of the race when his KTM suddenly ground to a halt after 115 km, with a fuel pump problem the probable cause. However, the Italian was able to play his trump card and take starter’s orders for stage 3, allowing him to continue his rally-raid apprenticeship. In return he received a penalty of more than 11 hours in the overall classification, but “Petrux” is just happy to still be present. “Today is another day,” was his cheerful comment at the start this morning.

  • 08:31 Moto: Some riders are already at the first check point

Skyler Howes is making no secret of his intentions by reaching WP1 with a lead of 36 seconds over the title holder Kevin Benavides. Only 17 bikes have started the special so far…

  • 08:11 Moto: Aaron Mare dons his superhero costume

Aaron Mare rounds off the top 10 for the start of the special. The South African is the last-minute replacement for Franco Caimí at Hero Motorsport, a team that has had its fair share of bad luck because Buhler and Santosh are, like the Argentinean, also absent due to injury. Aaron is therefore simply assisting Joaquim Rodrigues and it is a golden opportunity for him to return to the Dakar behind the handlebars of an official bike. As a reminder, he started the Dakar 2020 on a HRC official Honda and crashed on the first stage injuring his wrist, for his most recent appearance on the rally. The mechanic from Dubai took starter’s orders for the finale of the world championships in Abu Dhabi as a privateer competitor, just before Caimí’s accident. Team manager Wolgang Fischer seized the opportunity to give Mare another chance of becoming a hero!

  • 07:53 Moto: Gelažninkas still leads

Arūnas Gelažninkas has opened up a gap at the top of the Original by Motul classification. The Lithuanian now boasts a lead of more than 6’ over Czech rider Milan Engel. A newcomer to the Dakar, Charan Moore, who is hoping to ride for a factory team within three years, currently occupies third place, but lies 34’ behind Gelažninkas.

  • 07:46 Moto: The category’s leading lights at the helm

The big hitters are in command for the start of stage 3 in the bike category. Bang bang Barreda (Honda), the stage victory record holder will fire the first shots this morning, followed by overall classification leader super Sam Sunderland (GasGas) and title holder Kevin Bevavides (KTM).

  • 06:50 Moto: Barreda to play the role of scout

Joan Barreda, the winner of the second stage, will have to open the way for his rivals. The Spaniard nevertheless hopes to make up lost time in the overall classification. At present, he occupies 10th place, 20 minutes behind the new leader Sam Sunderland. However, he will have to withstand a horde of Husqvarna, KTM and GasGas riders, not forgetting those of the Yamaha team, starting with Adrien Van Beveren, second in the overall classification just 2 minutes behind the leader.

  • 06:35 Moto: Stage 3 modified

Stage 3 has been modified due to the heavy rain that soaked a part of the region around Al Artawiyah and will therefore be shortened in relation to the initially planned route. The special will now start at the point where CP1 was to be situated, reducing the timed section by one hundred kilometres. On a loop around Al Qaysumah, the competitors will initially travel along a 214 km link section that will take them to the start of the 255-km special, before returning along a 166-km link route. On the menu, there will be sand which, thanks to the rain, will be heavier and provide better carry. However, there will also be chains of dunes through which the competitors will have to wind as well as climb over a distance of 30 km, classed as level 2 difficulty, meaning today the riders and drivers will be faced with sandy behemoths.
