Jonass riflette su un ritorno educativo in MXGP nel 2021
L’ex campione del mondo MX2 Pauls Jonass ha iniziato il 2021 tra i primi tre e ha terminato l’anno in disparte con un infortunio, ma la seconda stagione completa del lettone nella classe regina ha rappresentato un ritorno affermativo al Grand Prix dopo un rovinoso 2020.
Jonass è stato Rookie of the Year MXGP 2019 dopo aver fatto tre apparizioni sul podio e ha imparato rapidamente le complessità della 450 dopo essersi ripreso da un intervento chirurgico al ginocchio durante l’inverno del 2018. Un incidente di allenamento durante il blocco della pandemia lo ha impegnato nell’intero condensato calendario 2020 causato dal Covid-19. Il simpatico 24enne si è trasferito nel team Standing Construct GASGAS Factory Racing per il 2021 e, dopo un approccio impaziente a una lunga off-season, ha iniziato l’anno desideroso di recuperare il tempo perduto.
“Sono rimasto sorpreso perché nel mio primo GP dopo così tanto tempo sono arrivato terzo nella seconda manche, il che è stato abbastanza buono”, ha detto del suo debutto GASGAS (solo il secondo anno per il marchio spagnolo in MXGP) al Gran Premio di Russia nel mese di giugno. “Non ho dubitato della mia velocità e abbiamo avuto un buon inverno, ma forse gli altri ragazzi dovevano ancora mettersi in buona forma. Ma la velocità c’era, anche se era una stagione altalenante. Ho ancora fatto errori da principiante. Sulla carta questo è stato il mio terzo anno in MXGP ma nel 2020 ho fatto solo due gare e nel 2019 stavo lottando con il ginocchio”.
Jonass avrebbe portato la MC 450 F tra i primi tre classificati al Gran Premio del Belgio ma, nel complesso, la campagna è stata incoerente. Ha chiuso l’anno 8° in classifica e ha saltato gli ultimi due eventi a Mantova a causa di un infortunio alla costola. “Quando salti un anno di gare, è difficile tornare indietro e riprendere confidenza con i primi”, ha valutato. “È stato un anno di costruzione e sono stato per lo più in buona salute, il che è una buona cosa. È stato lungo. Ero a tutto gas da novembre perché mi era mancato tanto ed ero pronto per marzo ma poi hanno rimandato a maggio, poi giugno. Non è stato facile e ho iniziato a sentirlo mentalmente dai tempi di Arco”.
Il 41 è stato tipicamente positivo, anche se ha perso il finale di Mantova. Il 2022 vedrà Jonass tornare in bianco mentre il team Standing Construct cambierà marchio per la terza volta in quattro anni, passando da KTM nel 2018 a GASGAS e ora Husqvarna per il 2022.
“È stata una stagione davvero competitiva ma, nel complesso, sono davvero contento di dove siamo”, ha concluso. “Volevo usare il 2021 come anno di costruzione per essere vicino al top nel 2022”.

Jonass reflects on an educational return to MXGP in 2021
Former MX2 World Champion Pauls Jonass started 2021 in the top three and finished the year back on the sidelines with injury but the Latvian’s second full season in the premier class represented an affirming return to Grand Prix racing after a ruinous 2020.
Jonass was 2019 MXGP Rookie of the Year after making three podium appearances and swiftly learned the intricacies of the 450 after recovering from knee surgery during the winter of 2018. A training crash during the pandemic lockdown caused him to almost the entire condensed Covid-19 affected 2020 campaign. The likeable 24-year-old moved to the Standing Construct GASGAS Factory Racing team for 2021 and, after an impatient approach to a long off-season, began the year eager to make up for lost time.
“I was surprised because in my first GP after so long I finished 3rd in the second moto, which was pretty good,” he said of his GASGAS debut (only the second year for the Spanish brand in MXGP) at the Grand Prix of Russia in June. “I didn’t doubt my speed and we had a good winter but maybe the other guys had yet to work their way into good shape. But the speed was there, even if it was an up-and-down season. I still made rookie mistakes. On paper this was my third year in MXGP but in 2020 I only made two races and in 2019 I was struggling with my knee.”
Jonass would take the MC 450 F to the overall top three at the Grand Prix of Belgium but, on the whole, the campaign was inconsistent. He ended the year 8th in the standings and missed the last two events at Mantova due to a rib injury. “When you skip one year of racing it is hard to come back and get the confidence to be with the front guys again,” he assessed. “It has been a building year and I’ve been mostly healthy, which is a good thing. It’s been a long one. I was full-gas from November because I had missed so much and I was ready for March but then they postponed until May, then June. It hasn’t been easy, and I started to feel it mentally by the time of Arco.”
#41 was typically positive, even though he missed out on the Mantova finale. 2022 will see Jonass back in white as the Standing Construct team change brands for the third time in four years, moving from KTM in 2018 to GASGAS and now Husqvarna for 2022. “It’s been a really competitive season but, overall, I’m really happy with where we are at,” he concluded. “I wanted to use 2021 as a building year to be close to the top in 2022.”
