Ben Watson si unisce alla Kawasaki in MXGP
Kawasaki conferma che Ben Watson sarà il nuovo compagno di squadra di Romain Febvre la prossima stagione, unendosi al francese nell’assalto del Kawasaki Racing Team al campionato mondiale di motocross FIM MXGP.
Considerato uno dei giovani britannici più promettenti degli ultimi anni, Ben Watson ha avuto una solida stagione da debuttante MXGP quest’estate, acquisendo esperienza nel corso dell’anno in questa classe altamente competitiva per culminare la sua stagione con la medaglia d’oro MXGP al Motocross di Nazioni. Ben alla fine ha mancato la top-ten nella classifica finale della serie MXGP per un paio di punti, ma ha concluso la top-ten a non meno di dieci round con un quinto assoluto come suo miglior risultato nel round olandese della serie.
Il ventiquattrenne originario del Nottinghamshire, in Inghilterra, è apparso per la prima volta sulla scena internazionale quando ha partecipato alla serie europea a dieci anni, vincendo la sua primissima gara nella classe 65cc. Ha progredito attraverso le classi e ha impressionato per tutta la sua carriera da adulto, iniziando con un quinto posto nella EMX250 e la vittoria nel famoso Enduro du Touquet nella classe Junior. Classificato tra i primi cinque nel Campionato del Mondo MX2 sia nel 2018 che nel 2020, ha dimostrato la sua abilità su tutte le superfici nelle fasi finali dell’ultima stagione con vittorie in GP sulle piste molto diverse di Lommel in Belgio e Pietramurata in Italia prima di passare al classe regina MXGP nel 2021.
Steve Guttridge, Racing Manager di Kawasaki Motors Europe, è convinto che Ben sarà un forte compagno di squadra per Romain Febvre: “È stato un processo decisionale difficile da affrontare insieme ai leader del progetto in Giappone riguardo a chi dovrebbe finalmente prendere il secondo posto all’interno della nostra Factory Team MXGP. Abbiamo un chiaro focus su Romain per sfidare il titolo, ma il futuro arriva veloce e anche un compagno di squadra più giovane che possa crescere nel programma MXGP è molto importante. Il duo ha già uno stretto rapporto poiché si sono spesso allenati insieme in passato e Ben ha già sperimentato una solida stagione da rookie nella classe MXGP che richiede una grande curva di apprendimento in più per i piloti che arrivano dalla MX2 per avere successo in questi giorni. All’interno del Kawasaki Racing Team crediamo che lo staff possa aiutare Ben a fare quel passo nella sua carriera nel 2022”.
Ben ora ha poco più di due mesi per prepararsi al round di apertura del Campionato del Mondo 2022 che inizierà nel suo nativo Regno Unito il 20 febbraio a Matterley Basin.
“Non vedo davvero l’ora di questo nuovo inizio. Sono stato con un altro paio di marchi per quasi tutta la mia vita e Kawasaki è uno che non ho mai guidato prima, quindi avere questo nuovo inizio con nuovi colori è sicuramente qualcosa di cui ho bisogno in questa fase della mia carriera. Ho avuto alcuni alti e bassi durante la mia stagione da debuttante MXGP quest’anno, ma penso di aver dimostrato in numerose occasioni come il Nazioni e molti altri GP che ho quello che serve per correre davanti. Mi mancavano solo alcune cose, ma mi unisco a un gruppo di ragazzi e una moto che credo davvero mi aiuterà. Sono davvero entusiasta di mettere la mia gamba sul KX450-SR. L’idea è di abituarsi alla moto prima di Natale; per avere un’idea della maneggevolezza, dell’erogazione di potenza e sistemare alcune piccole cose come l’altezza della sella, la posizione del manubrio e così via. Non vedo l’ora di lavorare con Romain e tutto il team e penso che questo sia esattamente ciò di cui ho bisogno come pacchetto per fare il passo successivo. Saranno due mesi difficili prima del GP di apertura a Matterley a febbraio, ma wow, che inizio della mia carriera in Kawasaki nel GP di casa con tutti i fan britannici che mi applaudono! “dice Ben.

Ben Watson joins Kawasaki in MXGP
Kawasaki confirms that Ben Watson will be the new teammate of Romain Febvre next season, joining the Frenchman in the Kawasaki Racing Team assault on the FIM MXGP Motocross World Championship.
Considered one of the most-promising British youngsters of recent years Ben Watson had a solid MXGP rookie season this summer, gaining in experience as the year went on in this highly-competitive class to culminate his season with the MXGP gold medal at the Motocross of Nations. Ben eventually just missed the top-ten in the final MXGP series rankings by a couple of points but he finished top-ten at no less than ten rounds with a fifth overall as his best result at the Dutch round of the series.
The twenty-four-year-old native of Nottinghamshire, England, first appeared on the international stage when he contested the European series as a ten-year-old, winning his very first race in the 65cc class. He progressed through the classes and has impressed throughout his adult career, starting with a fifth place in EMX250 and victory at the world-famous Enduro du Touquet in the Junior class. Ranked top five in the MX2 World Championship in both 2018 and 2020, he proved his ability on all surfaces in the closing stages of the latter season with GP victories on the vastly-different tracks of Lommel in Belgium and Pietramurata in Italy before switching to the premier MXGP class in 2021.
Kawasaki Motors Europe Racing Manager Steve Guttridge is convinced that Ben will be a strong teammate to Romain Febvre: “It was a tough decision-making process to work through along with the project leaders in Japan regarding whom should finally take the second seat inside our factory MXGP team. We have a clear focus on Romain to challenge for the title, but the future arrives fast and a younger teammate who can grow into the MXGP programme is very important also. The duo already have a close relationship as they have often trained together in the past and Ben has already experienced a solid rookie season in the MXGP class which takes a big extra learning curve for riders coming up from MX2 to succeed within these days. Inside the Kawasaki Racing Team we believe the staff can help Ben make that step in his career in 2022.”
Ben now has a little over two months to prepare for the opening round of the 2022 World Championship which will start in his native UK on February 20th at Matterley Basin. “I’m really looking forward to this fresh start. I’ve been with another couple of brands almost all my life and Kawasaki is one I’ve never ridden before, so to have this fresh start with new colours is definitely something I need at this stage of my career. I’ve had some ups-and-downs during my MXGP rookie season this year but I think I proved on numerous occasions like the Nations and several other GPs that I have what it takes to race up front. I was just missing a few things but I’m joining a group of guys and a bike I really believe will help me. I’m really excited to put my leg over the KX450-SR. The plan is to get used to the bike before Christmas; to get a feeling for the handling, the power delivery and sort out a few small things like seat height, position of the bars and so on. I’m looking forward to working with Romain and all the team and I think this is exactly what I need as a package to make the next step. It’s going to be a tough couple of months leading up to the opening GP at Matterley in February but wow, what a start to my Kawasaki career at the home GP with all the British fans cheering me on! “ says Ben.
