Antonio Cairoli’s Last Dance
Originario della Sicilia, Italia, Antonio Cairoli è uno dei più grandi piloti di motocross di tutti i tempi, con numerosi titoli mondiali al suo nome.
Antonio ‘Tony’ Cairoli è entrato nel suo primo campionato di motocross FIM nel 2002 dopo essere cresciuto in sella alle moto. Non ha avuto subito successo, ma ha mostrato di essere una vera promessa e, con il progredire della stagione, era ovvio che Cairoli stava aspettando il suo momento, imparando le basi e godendosi ogni singolo minuto lungo la strada.
Due anni dopo la sua pazienza è stata ripagata. Il giovane siciliano ha vinto la sua prima gara di campionato MX2 a Namur, ampiamente considerata come una delle piste più dure della serie. La sua impressionante vittoria è stata supportata da un terzo posto assoluto e la sua solida prestazione durante tutta la stagione ha messo saldamente nel mirino di Cairoli una vittoria del campionato.
Non doveva essere deluso. Nel 2005, a soli tre anni dal debutto, Cairoli conquista il suo primo mondiale con sei vittorie stagionali, nonostante un infortunio e una squalifica. A 19 anni, è stato il più giovane italiano ad aver vinto un importante titolo mondiale di motocross.
Dopo aver perso solo nel 2006, Cairoli ha vinto di nuovo il campionato nel 2007, a due gare dalla fine e 10 GP in tasca. Nello stesso anno ha anche avuto la possibilità di correre in un GP MX1 ed è entrato definitivamente nella classe nel 2009. Basti dire che ha superato le aspettative e ha vinto il suo primo campionato MX1 con aplomb.
Dal 2009, Cairoli ha continuato a dominare la classe regina del Campionato Mondiale di Motocross, conquistando il titolo ogni anno fino al 2015, quando un infortunio ha interrotto prematuramente le sue speranze di un’altra vittoria.
Cairoli aveva già consolidato la sua posizione come uno dei grandi di tutti i tempi dello sport a quel punto, ma era tutt’altro che finito con lo sport. Nel 2017 ha vinto un altro campionato e l’anno successivo ha mancato di poco il campionato conquistando il secondo posto assoluto.
L’infortunio ha ridotto la sua stagione nel 2019, ma Cairoli è tornato in grande stile nel 2020 quando ha conquistato il primo posto assoluto in Lettonia, e poi ha accumulato punti sufficienti per assicurarsi il terzo posto assoluto per la stagione.
Il 2021 è iniziato con risultati più positivi per Cairoli, a dimostrazione che continua a sfidarsi in testa ad ogni gara in cui corre.

Hailing from Sicily, in Italy, Antonio Cairoli is one of the all-time great motocross riders, with multiple World Championship titles to his name. Antonio ‘Tony’ Cairoli entered his first FIM Motocross Championship in 2002 after growing up riding bikes. He wasn’t immediately successful but showed real promise and, as the season progressed, it was obvious that Cairoli was biding his time, learning the ropes and enjoying every single minute of it along the way. Two years later and his patience paid off. The young Sicilian won his first MX2 championship race at Namur, widely regarded as one of the toughest tracks in the series. His impressive victory was backed up by a third-place finish overall, and his solid performance throughout the season put a championship win firmly in Cairoli’s sights. He wasn’t to be disappointed. In 2005, just three years after his debut, Cairoli took his first world championship with six wins under his belt for the season – despite an injury and a disqualification. Aged 19, he was the youngest Italian to have won a major motocross world title. After just missing out in 2006, Cairoli won the championship again in 2007, with two rounds to go and 10 GP wins in the bag. In the same year he also had the chance to race in an MX1 GP and joined the class permanently in 2009. Suffice to say, he exceeded expectations and won his first MX1 championship with aplomb. Since 2009, Cairoli has continued to dominate the premier class of the World Motocross Championship – claiming the title every year up until 2015, when an injury ended his hopes for another victory prematurely. Cairoli had already cemented his position as one of the sport’s all-time greats by that point, but he was far from done with the sport. In 2017 he won yet another championship and the following year narrowly missed out on the championship as he took second place overall. Injury curtailed his season in 2019, but Cairoli returned in style in 2020 as he claimed first overall in Latvia, and then amassed enough points to secure third overall for the season. 2021 started with more positive results for Cairoli, proving that he continues to challenge at the front of every race in which he rides.
