Herlings in vista del record di vittorie in MXGP
Jeffrey Herlings della Red Bull KTM ha celebrato la sua 96esima vittoria in carriera in Spagna lo scorso fine settimana e si trova a breve distanza dal record di 101 detenuto da Stefan Everts. Herlings è già il secondo pilota di maggior successo nella storia di questo sport dopo aver rivisto il totale finora raggiunto dal compagno di squadra Tony Cairoli, che concluderà la sua carriera a tempo pieno nel GP al Gran Premio di Città di Mantova il prossimo 10 novembre.
Il 27enne di recente ha aggiunto sei vittorie al suo bottino nel solo 2021, cinque di quelle degli ultimi sei round dell’attuale stagione del campionato. Ha guadagnato ogni singolo trofeo dai confini della Red Bull KTM, a cui è entrato per la prima volta nel 2010 e ha iniziato il percorso nella sua terza apparizione in un GP in quella stagione, a Valkenswaard nei Paesi Bassi.
Herlings ha accumulato oltre il 60% delle sue statistiche attraverso il dominio della MX2 e un incantesimo della sua carriera che ha caratterizzato tre campionati del mondo ma anche tre infortuni finali dal 2010-2016. Ora può fissare i numeri dell’ex mentore Everts e sapere che l’obiettivo è possibile, soprattutto con altri due anni con i colori Red Bull KTM davanti grazie al suo attuale contratto.
“Si sta decisamente avvicinando”, sorride. “I dieci campionati? Lascia perdere… ma ne mancano solo altri cinque”. Herlings potrebbe teoricamente raggiungere il traguardo quest’anno; se vince tutti e cinque i restanti Gran Premi. Di nuovo, il pensiero diede all’olandese motivo di sorridere. “Non è realistico”, ha detto, “ma se riusciamo a ottenerne uno, due tre, speriamo di poterlo ottenere l’anno prossimo”.

Herlings within sight of MXGP wins record
MXGP World Championship pace-setter, Red Bull KTM’s Jeffrey Herlings celebrated his 96th career victory in Spain last weekend and stands within touching distance of the record of 101 held by Stefan Everts. Herlings is already the second-most successful rider in the history of the sport after overhauling the total so far achieved by teammate Tony Cairoli, who will end his full-time GP career at the Grand Prix of Citta di Mantova on November 10th.
The recently turned 27-year-old has added six wins to his tally in 2021 alone, five of those from the last six rounds of the current championship campaign. He has earned every single trophy from the confines of the Red Bull KTM set-up, that he first joined in 2010 and begun the trail in his third GP appearance that season, at Valkenswaard in the Netherlands.
Herlings racked more than 60% of his statistics through MX2 domination and a spell of his career that featured three world championships but also three-season ending injuries from 2010-2016. He can now stare at former mentor Everts’ numbers and know the target is possible, especially with another two years in Red Bull KTM colours ahead thanks to his present contract.
“It’s definitely coming closer,” he grinned. “The ten championships? Forget about it…but only five more to go.” Herlings could theoretically reach the milestone this year; if he wins all five of the remaining Grands Prix. Again, the thought gave the Dutchman reason to smile. “It’s not realistic,” he said, “but if we can get one, two three more then hopefully we can get it next year.”
