Romain Febvre del Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team ha superato le avversità nella seconda manche del round spagnolo del Campionato Mondiale FIM MXGP Motocross dopo una schiacciante vittoria in gara uno.

Dopo aver ottenuto il terzo gate-pick nelle qualifiche intorno alla pista artificiale che si affaccia sul complesso commerciale intu-Xanadu nel sobborgo madrileno di Arroyomolinos, il francese ha scelto con freddezza il quinto cancello per darsi l’angolazione perfetta nella prima curva di gara uno per emergere in vantaggio dei suoi rivali in campionato al secondo posto. Dopo un giro per adattarsi al suo ritmo, ha subito iniziato a registrare i giri più veloci della gara mentre lavorava per trovare un modo per aggirare l’eroe locale Prado, sempre un pilota difficile da superare, per il comando. La pressione è stata quasi ripagata all’ottavo giro di diciannove quando ha tagliato a dadini all’interno dello spagnolo, ma la banchina si è rotta e il pilota della Kawasaki ha vissuto un momento difficile per riprendere il controllo in un incidente che gli ha perso temporaneamente due secondi. Riacquistando rapidamente la sua compostezza, Febvre è tornato in volo sulla ruota posteriore del suo rivale, la KX450-SR raccogliendo un’enorme spinta fuori dalla curva prima delle wave per un sorpasso scintillante. Una volta davanti, è scattato immediatamente, costruendo un vantaggio di otto secondi all’inizio dell’ultimo giro prima di controllare con calma per evitare errori non forzati e conquistare una vittoria estatica che ha ridotto il divario in testa alla classifica del campionato a un solo punto. Un passaggio al cancello tre per evitare di consegnare una linea interna allo spagnolo veloce si è ritorto contro immediatamente nei primi metri fuori dal cancello quando il suo vicino si è immediatamente spostato sulla Kawasaki e Febvre si è trovato nel traffico ai margini del i primi dieci. Peggio era seguire solo un paio di curve più avanti, poiché il francese si è trovato coinvolto in un groviglio a metà gruppo che lo ha lasciato temporaneamente intrappolato sotto la sua moto con una montagna da scalare dalla ventiquattresima posizione alla prima frazione. Ritagliandosi con decisione nel gruppo, era già quattordicesimo al giro più tardi e nel giro di dieci minuti, stabilendo tempi sul giro simili ai primi nonostante la rimonta nel traffico, era entrato nella top ten prima che i suoi progressi perdessero inevitabilmente lo stesso slancio degli uomini della classifica che hanno approfittato di una pista libera per lasciare i loro inseguitori. Dimostrando grande carattere Febvre ha continuato a spingere, non riuscendo a raggiungere il pilota al sesto posto per guadagnare il quarto posto assoluto nella giornata, a solo un punto dal podio, e mantenere il suo secondo posto nella classifica del campionato mentre la serie si dirige verso gli ultimi cinque round nell’arco di diciotto giorni.
Romain Febvre: “Mi sono sentito fantastico su questa pista; era molto ben preparata quindi le condizioni erano perfette già al mattino e sono stato contento di un terzo gate-pick. Nella prima gara sono partito bene, secondo dietro a Jorge Prado; Ho provato più volte a passarlo senza successo e ho anche commesso qualche errore, ma alla fine l’ho passato e ho fatto diversi giri veloci per creare un gap. Ero felice di vincere questa manche ma sfortunatamente la mia seconda partenza non è stata così buona e alla terza curva mi sono scontrato con altri piloti e sono caduto; Ero sotto la mia moto quindi ho perso molto tempo; Sono tornato in gara ultimo ma avevo una buona velocità e sono riuscito a tornare settimo. Tutto era OK a parte questo incidente; In realtà ero felice di finire settimo perché non potevo immaginare che fosse possibile quando sono tornato in sella alla mia moto. Ora ci spostiamo ad Arco; è una delle mie piste preferite e mi aspetto altri grandi risultati lì per continuare la nostra sfida per il titolo.“

Moto win and adversity for Romain Febvre in Spain
GP of SPAIN 2021 – INTU XANADU ARROYOMOLINOS – Results and points!
After earning third gate-pick in Qualifying around the man-made track overlooking the intu-Xanadu shopping complex in the Madrid suburb of Arroyomolinos the Frenchman coolly chose the fifth gate to give himself the perfect angle into the first turn of race one to emerge ahead of his championship rivals in second. After a lap to settle into his rhythm he immediately started to post the fastest laps of the race as he worked on finding a way around the local hero Prado, always a difficult rider to pass, for the lead. The pressure almost paid off on lap eight of nineteen as he diced inside the Spaniard but the berm was broken and the Kawasaki rider experienced a hairy moment to regain control in an incident which temporarily lost him two seconds. Quickly regaining his composure Febvre soared back onto the rear wheel of his rival, the KX450-SR picking up tremendous drive out of the turn before the waves for a scintillating pass. Once in front he immediately raced clear, building an advantage of eight seconds entering the final lap before calmly throttling back to avoid any unforced errors to clinch an ecstatic victory which closed the gap at the head of the championship table to just a single point. A switch to gate three to avoid handing an inside line to the fast-gating Spaniard back-fired immediately in the first few metres out of the gate as his new neighbour immediately moved over on the Kawasaki and Febvre found himself in traffic on the edge of the top ten. Worse was to follow just as couple of corners further as the Frenchman found himself involved in a midpack tangle which left him temporarily trapped under his bike with a mountain to climb from twenty-fourth at the first split. Decisively carving his way through the pack he was already fourteenth a lap later and within ten minutes, setting similar lap times to the leaders despite racing in traffic, had broken into the top ten before his progress inevitably lost the same momentum as the leaderboard men had taken advantage of a clear track to gap their chasers. Showing great character Febvre continued to push, narrowly failing to catch the rider in sixth to earn fourth overall on the day, just a single point from the podium, and maintain his second place in the championship standings as the series heads to the final five rounds in the space of eighteen days.
Romain Febvre: “I felt amazing on this track; it very well-prepared so the conditions were perfect already in the morning and I was happy with a third gate-pick. I got a good start in the first race, second behind Jorge Prado; I tried several times to pass him without success and I also made a few mistakes in the process but finally I passed him and put in several fast laps to make a gap. I was happy to win this moto but unfortunately my second start wasn’t so good and in the third corner I collided with other riders and crashed; I was under my bike so I lost a lot of time; I came back in the race last but I had good speed and was able to come back to seventh. Everything was OK apart from this crash; I was actually happy to finish seventh as I couldn’t imagine that was possible when I got back on my bike. Now we move to Arco; it is one of my favourite tracks and I expect more great results there to continue our challenge for the title.“
