Watson non è sicuro della mossa MXGP per il 2022 dopo lo stallo della Yamaha sul rinnovo del contratto
Il rookie MXGP 2021, vincitore della classe MXGP del Motocross delle Nazioni e l’unico pilota ufficiale britannico nella serie MXGP – Ben Watson – è attualmente in un limbo per il 2022 con Yamaha Motor Europe che esita a rinnovare il contratto per il 24enne.
Il team Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing ha avuto un anno magro di risultati con Glenn Coldenhoff che ha continuato ad adattarsi alla YZ450FM dopo cinque anni su macchine austriache e il doppio vicecampione del mondo Jeremy Seewer presumibilmente affetto da un attacco del virus Epstein-Barr. Un esame più ampio è quindi caduto sugli sforzi di Watson, dove la velocità dei primi dieci e il potenziale dei primi cinque sono stati mescolati con una misteriosa mancanza di velocità e forma su piste dure come Orlyonok, Russia e Afyon, Turchia, dove il britannico ha concluso 20-21, 20-19. Nell’ultima uscita MXGP in Sardegna è arrivato 6° assoluto.
Watson è stato informato di imparare e adattarsi alle esigenze di MXGP con almeno altri quindici vincitori del Gran Premio in campo. Dopo essere entrato in Yamaha nel 2018, il suo terzo posto nel team ufficiale è stato visto come la posizione ideale, mentre Coldenhoff e Seewer hanno sostenuto la pressione maggiore per i risultati. La Yamaha non ha attivato il contratto di Watson per un secondo mandato, tra le speculazioni che il suo posto potrebbe essere preso dall’attuale leader del campionato MX2 Maxime Renaux.
La disponibilità di Watson ha attirato l’attenzione di almeno altre due squadre del Gran Premio e la sua forma sul più grande palcoscenico dello sport a Mantova lo scorso fine settimana non farà altro che aumentare il suo titolo di pilota da tenere d’occhio.

Watson unsure of MXGP move for 2022 after Yamaha stall on contract renewal
2021 MXGP rookie, Motocross of Nations MXGP class winner and the only British factory rider in the MXGP series – Ben Watson – is currently in limbo for 2022 with Yamaha Motor Europe hesitating over a renewed contract for the 24-year-old.
The Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing team have had a lean year of results with Glenn Coldenhoff continuing to adapt to the YZ450FM after five years on Austrian machinery and double world championship runner-up Jeremy Seewer allegedly suffering with a bout of the Epstein-Barr virus. Wider scrutiny has therefore fallen on Watson’s efforts where top ten speed and top five potential have been mixed with a mysterious lack of speed and form at hard-pack tracks like Orlyonok, Russia and Afyon, Turkey where the Brit posted finishes of 20-21, 20-19. In the last MXGP outing in Sardinia he was 6th overall.
Watson was briefed to learn and adapt to the demands of MXGP with at least fifteen other Grand Prix winners in the field. After joining Yamaha in 2018, his third spot in the factory team was seen as the ideal position while Coldenhoff and Seewer carried the brunt of pressure for results. Yamaha have not activated Watson’s contract for a second term, amid speculation that his place could be taken by current MX2 championship leader Maxime Renaux.
Watson’s availability has attracted the attention of at least two other Grand Prix teams and his form on the sport’s biggest stage at Mantova last weekend will have only boosted his stock as a rider to watch.
