Valentino Rossi: “Pensavo che Tony potesse continuare”
Come molti, l’icona della MotoGP Valentino Rossi è rimasto sorpreso dal fatto che il nove volte campione del mondo FIM Motocross Tony Cairoli abbia deciso di chiamare “tempo” i suoi diciotto anni di carriera mentre era ancora nel vivo della battaglia per la corona MXGP 2021.
Cairoli ha ufficializzato la sua decisione in un evento pubblico davanti al suo team Red Bull KTM e ai vertici della KTM a Roma due settimane fa e poco prima del Gran Premio di Sardegna. A quel punto il 36enne, da poco compiuti, era a soli 29 punti dalla tabella rossa.
Rossi, che ha lottato nella sua ultima stagione in MotoGP come parte della squadra Petronas Yamaha e ha segnato solo due top ten, ha annunciato il proprio ritiro dopo quasi un quarto di secolo nel Campionato Mondiale FIM il mese precedente mentre era in Austria. Come Cairoli, anche Rossi ha accumulato nove titoli ed entrambi gli atleti sono tra i più vincenti di sempre nelle rispettive discipline.
“Abbiamo carriere molto simili, lui che ha fatto la differenza per molto, molto tempo in un motorsport difficile”, ha commentato in esclusiva Rossi. “A volte ha dominato per un’intera stagione. È stato un grande piacere seguirlo. Lo conosco personalmente, ed è un peccato che si è fermato perché pensavo che avrebbe continuato. Soprattutto quest’anno è molto veloce. Penso che possa dare qualcosa in più al motocross, allo sport e i tifosi. Il motocross è molto difficile e duro…e corre già da 18 anni ma io sono con lui, e per quello che vuole fare nella sua vita”.
Nello stesso modo in cui Rossi ha elevato il profilo della MotoGP e trasceso lo sport, Cairoli ha anche potenziato il profilo del motocross nella sua terra natale e in tutto il mondo. Il Gran Premio d’Italia MXGP era un evento singolare con poca consistenza in termini di circuiti. Ora la sabbia o il suolo italiano è responsabile di almeno due, se non tre, round della serie ogni stagione; anche pre-pandemia. Tale è stato/è l’impatto di Cairoli che Infront Moto Racing e la FIM si sono rapidamente mossi per ritirare il numero 222 lo scorso fine settimana al 74esimo Motocross delle Nazioni.

Valentino Rossi: “I thought Tony could continue”
Like many, MotoGP icon Valentino Rossi was surprised that nine-times FIM Motocross World Champion Tony Cairoli has decided to call ‘time’ on his eighteen-year career while still in the heat of the battle for the 2021 MXGP crown.
Cairoli made his decision official in a public event in front of his Red Bull KTM team and KTM senior management in Rome two weeks ago and just before the Grand Prix of Sardinia. At that point the recently-turned 36-year-old was just 29 points from the red plate.
Rossi, who has struggled in his final MotoGP campaign as part of the Petronas Yamaha squad and only marked two top ten finishes, announced his own retirement after almost a quarter of a century in the FIM World Championship the previous month while in Austria. Like Cairoli, Rossi has also accumulated nine titles and both athletes are among the most successful of all time in their respective disciplines.
“We have very similar careers with he made the difference for a long, long time in a what is a hard motorsport,” Rossi commented exclusively. “Sometimes he dominated for a whole season. It was a great pleasure to follow him. I know him personally, and its shame [he’s stopping] because I thought he would continue. Especially this year he is very fast. I think he can give something more for motocross and the sport and the fans. Motocross is very strong and hard…and he has been racing already for 18 years [but] I’m with him, and for what he wants to do with his life.”
In the same way that Rossi has elevated the profile of MotoGP and transcended the sport, Cairoli has also boosted the profile of motocross in his homeland and around the world. The MXGP Italian Grand Prix used to be a singular event with little consistency in terms of circuits. Now Italian sand or soil is responsible for at least two, if not three, rounds of the series each season; even pre-pandemic. Such was/is Cairoli’s impact that Infront Moto Racing and the FIM quickly moved to retire the #222 last weekend at the 74th Motocross of Nations.
