The 2021 Monster Energy British Grand Prix MotoGP

Packed grandstands, the inaugural year of Unleashing The Beast as title sponsor to the British Grand Prix MotoGP, and a Monster Energy athlete double podium. To top it all off championship leader Fabio Quartararo delivered a sensational lights-to-flag performance to secure his fifth victory of the year. It doesn’t get better than this.

In case you missed it; here is your definitive catch up for the 2021 Monster Energy British Grand Prix MotoGP.

Quartararo started from third position on the grid and slotted into second after the first corner. He had to relinquish two positions on the back straight before Turn 7, but it wasn’t for long. With 18 laps to go he overtook Francesco Bagnaia and had to close a small gap to the front duo. He managed it in no time. A lap later El Diablo took over second place from Aleix Espargaró and went on to set a provisional 2‘00.485s fastest lap of the race on lap 4. He then swiftly moved past Pol Espargaró in Turn 12 on the next lap. With clear space ahead of him, the Frenchman was off. Another 2‘00.098s fastest lap of the race on lap 6 gave him an advantage of 1.320s, which sealed the deal. The rest, as they say, was history.

Joining him on the podium – in second position – was Alex Rins, who followed up his awesome 2019 performance at Silverstone, to return to the MotoGP podium for the first time in 12 races. Starting from 10th place on the grid Rins made early progress before a lengthy battle with team-mate Joan Mir and the Ducati’s of Jack Miller and Francesco Bagnaia.

However once the Spaniard got through and into fourth position, a podium charge began as he reeled in both Espargaro brothers. Rins soon passed Pol Espargaro for third, before Aleix made a mistake in turn five which allowed the Suzuki rider through. With Fabio three seconds up the road and only a handful of laps left, Rins cruised home to secure his first podium of the season.

Here’s what the podium finishing duo had to say…

Fabio Quartararo: “It was perfect. I enjoy racing like that, living in the moment. I felt great at the start and stayed calm. I only made a few mistakes, and I felt like I was really good on braking. It was better than expected, and because of that I had kind of a change in strategy during the race. When I had a 3s lead I said, ’Okay, now it‘s time to go slowly and not make any mistakes‘, and then on the last lap I was just enjoying the track, still riding slowly. I‘m so happy about this result. It‘s a really special win. When I won in Assen, I already had some fans there. I don‘t know how many fans there were here today, but it was massive, and it was great to share this moment with them. I want to thank them. For a Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP rider, it‘s always nice to win a Monster Energy Grand Prix, so I basically got it all, it‘s amazing! It‘s a great win for them, and also for my family and the team.”

Alex Rins: “I’m super, super, super happy because we’ve put in a lot of effort and work to get back on the podium. It hasn’t been easy, because even when I’ve had the pace, I’ve had crashes and problems. I was aiming for a Top 5 finish today, but in the end I felt really good and comfortable with the bike so I was able to push. I was fast but without taking risks or having to make aggressive moves. It’s a great feeling to be back on the podium and celebrate with all my team.”

In Moto2, Sky Racing Team VR46 rider Marco Bezzecchi took his sixth podium of the season – finishing second – while Sam Lowes delighted the 67,000 attending home fans with a hard fought fourth place finish. After the race Sam said: “To finish fourth is never the best position, especially at my home race. But it was a really good ride. I fought all the way to the end, improving my pace from practice in the race. I’m happy with the way I rode but obviously disappointed with fourth. I want to say a massive thank you to the fans for the great support. They made me feel so good on the in-lap and their support has been incredible.”

If all that wasnt enough, fans were kept on the edge of their seats in between the racing with record breaking FMX and Action Sports Shows. Multiple X-Games medallists and freestyle riding legends Axell Hodges, Blake ‘Bilko’ Williams, Takayuki Higashino, and André Villa flew in specially to join an all star cast of BMX athletes to catch huge air in the Monster Energy FMX Show.
