Gajser vince l’MXGP della Lettonia
Per la terza volta nella sua carriera di grande successo, Tim Gajser del Team HRC ha vinto l’MXGP della Lettonia a bordo della sua Honda CRF450RW. In quelle che sono state due manche molto diverse a causa delle condizioni meteorologiche, il # 243 è rimasto solido e coerente, andando due a due per il primo assoluto e raddoppiando il suo vantaggio in classifica MXGP.
La pista sabbiosa di Kegums è sempre una proposta difficile per i piloti con lo strato superiore morbido che lascia il posto a una base solida, ma per tutto il giorno Gajser ha dimostrato di essere all’altezza di tutte le condizioni. Le qualifiche si sono svolte sotto il sole splendente e, dopo aver ottenuto il primo gate pick la scorsa settimana a Lommel, ha ottenuto il secondo tempo questo fine settimana. Questo gli ha dato la piattaforma per uscire dal cancello e sfidare la prima curva ed è esattamente quello che ha fatto in entrambe le gare, tagliando la linea dell’holeshot circa al quinto posto ogni manche.
Nella prima manche, il tempo è rimasto soleggiato e dopo la sua buona partenza, un paio di sorpassi veloci hanno portato lo sloveno in seconda posizione. Nonostante un buon passo, non è riuscito a fare nulla sul leader e si è dovuto accontentare di un solido secondo posto, sicuro che un’altra buona manche gli avrebbe dato la possibilità della classifica generale.
Circa 30 minuti prima del secondo gatedrop, la pioggia ha iniziato a cadere e non ha cessato fino a quando la bandiera a scacchi non è stata sventolata, dando ai piloti un Kegums leggermente più complicato di quello a cui sono abituati. Ancora una volta, però, Gajser ha girato la prima curva in buona posizione e mentre i primi hanno commesso degli errori, è rimasto solido, passando al terzo posto e mettendo pressione sul duo di testa. Con il passare dei giri il pilota della Honda è rimasto al terzo posto, che lo avrebbe visto terzo assoluto. Tuttavia, all’ultimo giro, un altro pilota davanti ha commesso un errore regalando a Gajser altri due punti che lo hanno visto balzare sul gradino più alto del podio.
È stato un momento fantastico per Tim e per tutti nel Team HRC, ed è stata solo una ricompensa per tutto il duro lavoro che hanno già fatto in questa stagione. È stata anche una buona spinta alla fiducia verso questa mini pausa estiva, dove il prossimo round è un doppio incontro in Turchia il 5 e l’8 settembre. Gajser ha vinto finora tre dei sette round e si trova a 13 punti di vantaggio in cima al campionato mondiale MXGP.

Sono super contento di come è andato questo fine settimana, vincendo la classifica generale dopo due gare difficili. Volevo provare a eliminare gli errori dei due round precedenti e sapevo che se l’avessi fatto avrei fatto bene, quindi è stato bello vedere che ha già pagato. Ovviamente vincere è una spinta enorme prima di questi tre weekend di pausa, quindi mi godrò questo momento prima di tornare al lavoro e prepararmi per la seconda metà della stagione. Un grande ringraziamento a tutti nel Team HRC per tutto il loro lavoro e non vedo l’ora che arrivi la Turchia, che è una pista su cui mi piace molto correre.

Eravamo contenti della guida di Tim in entrambe le gare, perché era stato fluido e costante in quelle condizioni molto difficili, ma poi vedere che aveva vinto la classifica generale nell’ultimo giro è stato semplicemente fantastico e siamo davvero felici di come è andata a finire. Gli ultimi due round sono stati duri, con errori che gli sono costati punti, quindi era importante rimontare e mostrare a tutti che è ancora un top rider, ed è esattamente quello che ha fatto. Ora abbiamo un po’ di pausa per riorganizzarci e prepararci per quella che dovrebbe essere una lunga seconda metà della stagione, ma tutti nel Team HRC hanno dimostrato di essere pronti a lavorare sodo e portare a termine il lavoro!

Gajser victorious at the MXGP of Latvia
For the third time in his highly-successful career, Team HRC’s Tim Gajser has won the MXGP of Latvia on board his Honda CRF450RW. In what were two vastly different motos due to the weather conditions, the #243 stayed solid and consistent, going two-two for first overall, and more than doubling his MXGP championship points lead in the process.
The sandy Kegums track is always a tricky proposition for the riders with the soft top layer making way for a firm base, but all day long Gajser showed he was a match for all conditions. Qualifying took place in bright sunshine, and after getting first gate-pick last week in Lommel, he backed it up by getting the second-choice time this weekend. This gave him the platform to get out of the gate and challenge round the first bend and that’s exactly what he did in both races, crossing the holeshot line in about fifth place each moto.
In the first moto, the weather remained sunny and after his good start, a couple of quick passes moved the Slovenian into second position. Despite a good pace, he wasn’t able to make any moves on the leader and instead had to settle for a solid second place, safe in the knowledge that another good moto would give him the chance of the overall.
About 30 minutes before the second gatedrop, the rain started falling and it didn’t let up until the chequered flag was waved, giving the riders a slightly trickier Kegums than they are used to. Once again though, Gajser rounded the first corner in good position and while those in front made early mistakes, he remained solid, moving through into third place and putting pressure on the leading duo. As the laps ticked off, the Honda rider remained in third place, which would have seen him third overall. However, on the last lap, another rider in front made a mistake giving Gajser two more points which saw him jump up to the top of the podium.
It was a fantastic moment for Tim and everyone in Team HRC, and was just-reward for all the hard work they’ve put in this season already. It was also a good confidence boost heading into this mini-summer break where the next round is a double-header in Turkey on September 5th and 8th. Gajser has now won three of the seven rounds so far, and sits 13 points clear at the top of the MXGP world championship.

I’m super-happy with how this weekend has gone, winning the overall after two tough races. I wanted to try and cut out the mistakes from the previous couple of rounds, and I knew if I did that I would do well, so it was good to see that it paid off already. Obviously winning is a massive boost before these three weekends’ off so I will enjoy this moment before getting back to work and preparing myself for the second half of the season. A big thanks to everyone in Team HRC for all their work and I can’t wait for Turkey, which is a track I really enjoy racing.

We were happy with Tim’s riding in both races, because he’d been smooth and consistent in what were very difficult conditions, but then to see that he’d won the overall on the final lap was just amazing and we’re really delighted with how it turned out. The past two rounds had been tough, with mistakes costing him points so it was important to rebound and show everyone that he is still a top rider, and that’s exactly what he did. We now have a bit of a break to regroup and prepare for what should be a long second half of the season, but everyone in Team HRC has showed they are ready to work hard and get the job done!
