Romain Febvre vince Lommel per andare secondo in punti
Romain Febvre del Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team ha vinto la gara più dura della stagione a Lommel in Belgio, conquistando il secondo posto nella classifica a punti del campionato FIM World MXGP Motocross.
Il francese ha guadagnato la quarta scelta del cancello al mattino e ha confermato le sue reazioni e l’incomparabile erogazione di potenza della KX450-SR con un chiaro holeshot – il suo terzo negli ultimi quattro GP – in gara uno. Tirando immediatamente fuori un vantaggio di tre secondi, la sospensione divorando impeccabilmente la pista accidentata, ha metodicamente esteso il suo vantaggio di metà distanza a sei secondi sul suo unico rivale immediato mentre il duo ha distanziato il resto della classifica di mezzo minuto. A cinque giri dalla fine il suo unico sfidante – lo specialista indiscusso della sabbia più veloce al mondo – ha finalmente battuto il leader Kawasaki ma il secondo è stato salvo; tale era il loro vantaggio su tutti gli altri che anche un piccolo errore a tre giri dal traguardo non poteva mettere in pericolo il quinto podio della manche di Romain in undici gare. Il compagno di squadra del KRT Ivo Monticelli ha vinto l’holeshot in gara due, ma Febvre era già passato in vantaggio quando sono usciti dalla curva e hanno subito distanziato il gruppo con il giro più veloce della manche. Improvvisamente al secondo giro una piccola caduta lo ha riportato in quinta posizione e, con la visiera rotta dal casco, ha dovuto fare i conti con il posatoio di sabbia bagnato dalle ruote posteriori dei suoi rivali ma non hanno avuto risposta al ritmo del Il francese e la sua Kawasaki. Dopo venti minuti ha conquistato il secondo posto in manche – sufficienti per assicurarsi la vittoria assoluta del GP – ma aveva fame di altri e a cinque giri dalla fine ha spazzato via il leader della corsa con una mossa intelligente costruita attraverso diverse curve per celebrare la vittoria del GP con un anche la vittoria in moto. Il bottino di quarantasette punti ha portato Romain al secondo posto nella classifica del campionato, a soli cinque punti dalla tabella rossa del leader del campionato, a un terzo della serie estenuante.
Romain Febvre: “Sì!!! Non mi sono trasferita a vivere qui vicino tanti anni fa per niente. Tutto il duro lavoro sta finalmente dando i suoi frutti; Questa settimana ho fatto un ottimo lavoro con il mio compagno di squadra e con l’intero team Kawasaki e ce l’abbiamo fatta… significa davvero molto vedere la mia faccia sul gradino più alto del podio qui a Lommel dopo che ci sono stato vicino diverse volte in passato . Ho sbagliato entrambe le manche ma ho comunque vinto il GP. Avevo un ottimo passo già nella prima gara ma poi mi sono ribaltato; quando Jeffrey mi ha preso ho provato ad analizzare dove fosse più veloce e non l’ho lasciato andare ma dopo due giri mi sono ribaltato. Poi sono stato solo per il secondo e sono tornato a casa; Sapevo che la seconda manche era per il GP e ho fatto un giro molto veloce all’inizio per essere solo. Sono stato chiaro fino a quando ho commesso un piccolo errore che mi ha riportato in quinta posizione; mi ci sono voluti alcuni giri per riorganizzarmi ma ero determinato a vincere sia la manche che il GP. Ho superato i ragazzi davanti a me e ce l’ho fatta; Ero su di esso quella seconda manche. Sono così orgoglioso della mia squadra e ringrazio loro per tutto; di sicuro festeggeremo stasera. È sempre bello essere vicini alla zona punti, ma la tabella rossa non significa nulla in questa fase della stagione. È stata una buona giornata per noi, ma ci sono molte gare da fare; è una lunga stagione. Finora abbiamo fatto solo sei gare, ma sento che questo sarà il nostro anno! “
Ivo Monticelli ha inevitabilmente trovato la dura prova contro gli esperti della sabbia nelle qualifiche ed è stato limitato al diciassettesimo tempo, ma l’italiano è uscito dal cancello in gara uno e ruggito all’esterno della curva uno per stabilirsi in settima posizione. Sfortunatamente una caduta più avanti nel giro di apertura lo ha lasciato in coda al gruppo, ma ha continuato a spingere per tutta la gara per finire ventiseiesimo. La sua Kawasaki ha ottenuto di nuovo una guida straordinaria fuori dal cancello Ivo ha vinto il premio holeshot per la prima volta in questa stagione in gara due, ma la sua giornata di gare era già finita alla curva successiva quando è caduto pesantemente sulla spalla sinistra ed era troppo dolorante per Continua.
Ivo Monticelli: “E’ stato un weekend davvero duro. In qualifica ero solo diciassettesimo, ma il mio tempo sul giro era vicino alla top ten. Ho fatto un bel salto dal centro del cancello per tenermi settimo ma ho avuto una grossa caduta già al primo giro e ho rotto la visiera del mio casco; che ha reso difficile prendere un buon ritmo sotto la pioggia. Nella seconda manche ho preso l’holeshot ma sono caduto alla seconda curva; la mia spalla è saltata fuori e dentro di nuovo e la mia corsa era finita. Sono deluso da me stesso; Lavoro duro ma gli errori mi stanno costando. Credo ancora in me stesso e continuerò a lavorare per ottenere risultati migliori. Voglio anche dire grazie alla squadra. È stata una brutta giornata per me, ma fanno un ottimo lavoro e apprezzo molto come credono ancora in me dopo la gara. So che sono sempre dietro di me. Ci vediamo in Lettonia. “

Romain Febvre wins Lommel to go second in points
Romain Febvre of the Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team won the toughest race of the season at Lommel in Belgium to go second in the FIM World MXGP Motocross Championship points standings.
The Frenchman earnt fourth choice of gate in the morning and confirmed his reactions and the incomparable power delivery of the KX450-SR with a clear holeshot – his third in the last four GPs – in race one. Immediately pulling out a three second lead, the suspension eating up the rough track impeccably, he methodically extended his advantage by half distance to six seconds over his only immediate rival as the duo outdistanced the rest of the leaderboard by half a minute. Five laps from the end his only challenger – the undisputed fastest sand specialist in the world – finally ran down the Kawasaki leader but second was safe; such was their advantage over everyone else that even a small error three laps from the finish could not endanger Romain’s fifth moto podium in eleven races. KRT teammate Ivo Monticelli grabbed the holeshot award in race two but Febvre had already moved ahead as they swept out of the turn and immediately outdistanced the field with the fastest lap of the moto. Suddenly on the second lap a small crash pushed him back to fifth and, with the peak broken off his helmet, he had to deal with the wet roost of sand from the rear wheels of his rivals but they had no answer to the pace of the Frenchman and his Kawasaki. After twenty minutes he claimed second in the moto – sufficient to ensure the overall GP victory – but he was hungry for more and five laps from the end swept around the race leader with a clever move built through several turns to celebrate the GP win with a moto victory too. The forty-seven point haul has moved Romain to second in the championship standings, just five points shy of the championship leader’s red plate, a third of the way through the gruelling series.
Romain Febvre: “Yes !!! I didn’t move to live close to here all those years ago for nothing. All the hard work is finally paying off; I did some really good work with my teammate and the entire Kawasaki team this week and we did it … it really means a lot to see my face on the top of the podium here in Lommel after I was close several times in the past. I was making a mistake both motos but I still won the GP. I had a really good pace already in the first race but then I tipped over; when Jeffrey caught me I tried to analyse where he was faster and I didn’t let him go but after two laps I tipped over. Then I was alone for second and just rode it home; I knew the second moto was for the GP and I put in a really fast lap at the beginning to be alone. I was clear until I made a small mistake which pushed me back to fifth; it took me a few laps to regroup but I was determined to win both the moto and the GP. I passed the guys in front of me and I did it; I was on it that second moto. I’m so proud of my team and my thanks to them for everything; for sure we’re gonna celebrate tonight. It’s always good to be close to the points lead but the red plate means nothing at this stage of the season. It was a good day for us but there are many race to go; it’s a long season. We only did six races so far, but I feel this is going to be our year! “
Ivo Monticelli inevitably found the going tough against the sand experts in Qualifying and was restricted to seventeenth fastest time but the Italian shot out of the gate in race one and roared around the outside of turn one to establish himself in seventh position. Unfortunately a fall further round the opening lap left him at the tail of the field but he kept pushing for the entire race to finish twenty-sixth. His Kawasaki again getting stunning drive out of the gate Ivo claimed the holeshot award for the first time this season in race two but his day’s racing was over already at the next turn as he crashed heavily on his left shoulder and was in too much pain to continue.
Ivo Monticelli: “It was a really hard weekend. I was just seventeenth in Qualifying but my lap time was close to the top ten. I got a good jump from the centre of the gate to hold seventh but I had a big crash already on the first lap and broke the visor on my helmet; that made it hard to take a good rhythm in the rain. The second moto I took the holeshot but I crashed at the second turn; my shoulder popped out and in again and my race was done. I’m disappointed with myself; I work hard but mistakes are costing me. I still believe in myself and will keep working for better results. I also want to say thanks to the team. It was a bad day for me but they do such a good job and I really appreciate how they still believe in me after the race. I know they are behind me all the time. See you in Latvia. “
