MONACO (Principato di Monaco) luglio 2021 – Il Campionato Mondiale FIM Motocross torna in Olanda questo fine settimana per il Gran Premio d’Olanda di quest’anno a Oss !
Nel corso degli anni sedi come Lierop, Assen e Valkenswaard hanno ospitato il Gran Premio di Motocross olandese, anche se in questa stagione l’ MXGP dei Paesi Bassi si svolgerà in un luogo diverso poiché celebrerà il ritorno di un’ex sede del Campionato del Mondo degli anni ’80, che è Oss.
La pista olandese, situata nel sud del paese ea meno di 50 km da Eindhoven, ha aperto i battenti nel 1980 ed era poi meglio conosciuta come ‘ Witte Ruysheuve ‘. Cinque anni dopo, nel 1985, la pista ha presentato il Gran Premio del Campionato del Mondo Motocross, che ha visto vittorioso il pilota di casa ed ex Campione del Mondo 125cc, Dave Strijbos.
Il club ha poi organizzato altri due GP a Oss nel 1989 e nel 1998, dominati dall’americano Mike Healey e dall’italiano Alessio Chiodi. Ora, 23 anni dopo, Oss tornerà al FIM Motocross World Championship per ospitare quello che sarà sicuramente un emozionante weekend di gara!
Oltre alle consuete gare MXGP e MX2, l’MXGP dei Paesi Bassi vedrà anche i round dei campionati EMX250 ed EMX Open. Nella categoria 250 Europei il pilota del Fantic Factory Team Maddii Nicholas Lapucci guida il campionato davanti a Kevin Horgmo dell’SM Action Racing Team e Cornelius Toendel del Riley Racing Yamaha . Intanto nell’EMX Open, dopo un’incredibile prestazione a Maggiora due settimane fa, Filippo Zonta precede Nicholas Dercourt e Davide De Bortoli . Con entrambi i campionati a corto di punti, sarà interessante vedere chi vincerà questo fine settimana.

Mentre entriamo nella prima gara sulla sabbia della stagione, non c’è dubbio che tutti gli occhi saranno puntati su Jeffrey Herlings della Red Bull KTM Factory Racing . Come molti di noi sanno, Herlings è molto forte sulla sabbia e ha vinto il Gran Premio d’Olanda per un totale di 14 volte dal 2010, di cui 10 vittorie in MX2 e 4 nella categoria MXGP.
Dopo la vittoria di un GP a Maggiora due settimane fa, Herlings inizierà il suo round di casa con una bella spinta fiduciosa dopo tre GP su una base dura, tornerà su un terreno che preferisce di più e su cui ha dominato in passato, quindi una vittoria per il Bullet è altamente probabile.
Un pilota che potrebbe sfidarlo per la vittoria è Glenn Coldenhoff di Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing. Per Coldenhoff le gare di Oss saranno un vero GP di casa visto che l’olandese è cresciuto nella zona. Con la fiducia di un podio in Italia, dove era a pari punti con Herlings per la vittoria del GP, oltre al sostegno del pubblico di casa, Coldenhoff sarà forte e una vera minaccia.
Nel frattempo , Tim Gajser del Team HRC cercherà di recuperare quanti più punti possibili in campionato con un fine settimana solido. A Maggiora Gajser non è riuscito a salire sul podio, anche se le sue possibilità di podio questo fine settimana sono piuttosto alte. L’anno scorso a Valkenswaard lo sloveno ha messo a segno una prestazione incredibile andando 1-2 per il secondo posto assoluto. Ha anche vinto due volte a Lommel durante il triplo incontro belga, quindi non c’è dubbio che Gajser possa guidare nella sabbia e sarà uno da tenere d’occhio.
C’è anche Antonio Cairoli della Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, che ultimamente è in una forma incredibile. Dopo non essere riuscito a segnare punti nella seconda gara di Orlyonok, Cairoli è tornato a lottare a Matterley Basin per ottenere la sua prima vittoria in un GP della stagione, seguita da un’altra grande prestazione a Maggiora andando 3-3 per pareggiare i punti con Herlings e Coldenhoff. Cairoli è sempre stato un buon pilota di sabbia avendo vinto più di una manciata di volte il GP di Olanda e Belgio, quindi non sarebbe una sorpresa vederlo ancora una volta sul gradino più alto.
Ovviamente c’è anche Romain Febvre del Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team che ha vinto la sua prima gara a Maggiora, anche se la seconda manche è stata molto più dura ed è costata al francese podio e punti iridati. Nonostante ciò è ancora terzo, con solo due punti di vantaggio su Cairoli, quindi ovviamente sarà ansioso di raccogliere più punti possibili per mantenere il suo posto.
Anche Jeremy Seewer e Ben Watson di Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing cercheranno di più questa volta, con entrambi i piloti che hanno ottenuto i primi 10 risultati a Maggiora. La coppia è anche nota per essere brava sulla sabbia, quindi potrebbe essere un altro GP in cui vedremo di nuovo tutti e tre i piloti Yamaha ufficiali nella top 10.
La scorsa stagione, Arminas Jasikonis di Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing è arrivato terzo assoluto a Valkenswaard durante il Gran Premio d’Olanda dopo due solidi terzi posti. In questa stagione, Jasikonis deve ancora raccogliere punti dopo essere tornato dall’infortunio, ma con la prima gara sulla sabbia dell’anno che si svolge questo fine settimana, abbiamo potuto vedere il lituano scalare l’ordine mentre ottiene un’altra gara alle spalle e diventa più sicuro.
I piloti locali Calvin Vlaanderen di Gebben Van Venrooy Racing e Brian Bogers di Standing Construct GasGas Factory Racing vorranno fare bene durante il loro GP di casa, così come i piloti wildcard Lars van Berkel, Rene De Jong e Sven Van der Mierden .

In MX2, Roan Van De Moosdijk di F&H Kawasaki Racing è destinato ad essere uno dei principali protagonisti per il podio di Oss. Dopo essersi avvicinato ai primi tre posti assoluti a Orlyonok e Matterley Basin, Van De Moosdijk spingerà per il suo primo podio della stagione 2021 e correre in casa gli darà sicuramente una sorta di vantaggio. Anche i suoi compagni di squadra Mathys Boisrame e Mikkel Haarup non possono essere esclusi, con Boisrame che ha mostrato enormi miglioramenti nella sabbia la scorsa stagione e finora quest’anno ha lottato costantemente nella parte alta del campo.
Un’altra delle più grandi minacce per la vittoria sarà la squadra Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MX2 . Tutti e tre i piloti, Jago Geerts, Maxime Renaux e Thibault Benistant hanno le carte in regola per guidare le gare. Geerts, nato in Belgio, ha ovviamente il vantaggio più grande essendo un pilota di sabbia molto forte, ma Renaux può esibirsi anche sui tracciati morbidi, come ha dimostrato a Valkenswaard la scorsa stagione, dove è arrivato secondo sul podio. E, naturalmente, Benistant sarà pieno di fiducia dopo la sua vittoria in gara uno a Maggiora. Quindi, tutti e tre i piloti potrebbero dare spettacolo questo fine settimana.
Una delle domande più grandi in arrivo al Gran Premio d’Olanda era se vedremo o meno Tom Vialle della Red Bull KTM Factory Racing fare il suo ritorno. Purtroppo Vialle salterà le gare di Oss dopo due GP difficili a causa di una frattura alla mano. L’osso rotto alla mano è quasi guarito, ma lo stress potrebbe essere una battuta d’arresto per il Campione del Mondo in carica, quindi il francese ha preso la decisione di non prendere parte alle gare di questo fine settimana. Al momento Vialle è in 11° in classifica generale, a 63 punti dal leader Mattia Guadagnini.
Per Guadagnini le prossime gare saranno un vero banco di prova per vedere se l’italiano può fare altrettanto bene sulla sabbia come ha fatto nelle gare sul duro finora in questa stagione, così come per vedere se avere la tabella rossa aggiunge ulteriore pressione o se il rookie sarà in grado di tenerlo insieme e fare altre due gare solide e continuare il suo successo sul podio.
Naturalmente, anche Ruben Fernandez della Honda 114 Motorsport vorrà entrare in azione e rimanere tra i primi tre in campionato. Fernandez ha mostrato il suo lato feroce in queste ultime gare, partecipando ad alcune forti battaglie per le posizioni di vertice in ogni gara per cui si è schierato. Le gare di Oss saranno un’altra opportunità per lo spagnolo di consolidarsi come contendente al titolo in questa stagione dopo alcune ottime gare finora.
Un altro pilota che cercherà di ottenere la sua migliore prestazione sarà Kay De Wolf di Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing , che parteciperà per la prima volta al suo Gran Premio di casa nella classe del Campionato del Mondo MX2. Due settimane fa, sia De Wolf che Beaton hanno fatto delle belle gare, finendo entrambi tra i primi 10 e combattendo insieme tra i primi 5. Per De Wolf questa sarà un’opportunità per brillare e mostrare cosa ci si può aspettare più avanti nella stagione man mano che acquisirà più fiducia.

MXGP is off to Oss!
MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 14 July 2021 – The FIM Motocross World Championship returns to the Netherlands this weekend for this year’s Dutch Grand Prix in Oss!
Over the years venues such as Lierop, Assen and Valkenswaard have all hosted the Dutch Motocross Grand Prix, though this season the MXGP of the Netherlands will take place somewhere different as it will celebrate the return of a former World Championship venue of the 80’s, that is Oss.
The Dutch track, located in the south of the country and less than 50km from Eindhoven, first opened its doors in 1980 and was then better known as ‘Witte Ruysheuve’. Five years later, in 1985 the track presented the Motocross World Championship Grand Prix, which saw home rider and former 125cc World Champion, Dave Strijbos victorious.
The club then organised another two GP’s in Oss in 1989 and 1998 which were dominated by American Mike Healey and Italian Alessio Chiodi. Now 23 years later Oss will make a comeback to the FIM Motocross World Championship to host what is bound to be an exciting race weekend!
Alongside the usual MXGP and MX2 races, the MXGP of the Netherlands will also see rounds of the EMX250 and EMX Open Championships. In the European 250 category Fantic Factory Team Maddii rider Nicholas Lapucci leads the championship over SM Action Racing Team’s Kevin Horgmo and Cornelius Toendel from Riley Racing Yamaha. Meanwhile in EMX Open, after an incredible performance in Maggiora two weeks ago, Filippo Zonta leads over Nicholas Dercourt and Davide De Bortoli. With both championships tight on points, it will be interesting to see who will come out on top this weekend.
As we enter the first sand race of the season, there’s no doubt that all eyes will be on Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings. As many of us know, Herlings is very strong in the sand and has won the Dutch Grand Prix a total of 14 times since 2010, including 10 wins in MX2 and 4 in the MXGP category.
Coming off the back of a GP victory in Maggiora two weeks ago, Herlings will enter his home round with a nice confident boost after three GP’s on a hardpack base, he will be back on a terrain he prefers a lot more and has been dominant on in the past, so a win for the Bullet is highly likely.
A rider who could challenge him for the win is Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff. For Coldenhoff the races in Oss will be a true home GP as the Dutchman grew up in the area. With the confidence of a podium finish in Italy, where he was tied on points with Herlings for the GP win, as well as the support of the home crowd, Coldenhoff will be strong and a real threat.
Meanwhile Team HRC’s Tim Gajser will be looking to claw back as many championship points as he can with a solid weekend. In Maggiora Gajser failed to place on the podium, though his chances of a podium this weekend are pretty high. Last year in Valkenswaard the Slovenian put on an incredible performance to go 1-2 for second overall. He also won twice in Lommel during the Belgian triple-header so there’s no question that Gajser can ride in the sand and will be one to look out for.
There’s also Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli who has been in incredible shape lately. After failing to score points in the second race in Orlyonok, Cairoli came back fighting in Matterley Basin to take his first GP win of the season and the followed that up with another strong performance in Maggiora going 3-3 to tie on points with Herlings and Coldenhoff. Cairoli has always been a good sand rider having won the Dutch and Belgian GP’s more than a handful times, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him on the top step once again.
Of course, there’s also Romain Febvre of Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team who managed his first race win in Maggiora, though the second heat was much tougher and cost the Frenchman a podium and championship points. Despite that he is still third, just two points ahead of Cairoli, so of course he will be keen to pick up as many points as he can to keep his spot.
Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer and Ben Watson will also be looking for more this time around, with both riders getting top 10 results in Maggiora. The pair are also known to be good in the sand so it could be another GP that we see all three factory Yamaha riders inside the top 10 again.
Last season, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Arminas Jasikonis finished third overall in Valkenswaard during the Dutch Grand Prix after two solid third place finishes. This season, Jasikonis is yet to pick up points after making his return from injury, but with the first sand race of the year taking place this weekend, we could see the Lithuanian climb up the order as he gets another race under his belt and becomes more confident.

In MX2, F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Roan Van De Moosdijk is bound to be one of the main protagonists for the podium in Oss. After coming close to a top three overall finish in Orlyonok and Matterley Basin, Moosdijk will be pushing for his first podium of the 2021 season and racing at home will for sure give him some sort of advantage. His teammates Mathys Boisrame and Mikkel Haarup cannot be ruled out either, with Boisrame showing huge improvements in the sand last season and so far this year he has been consistently fighting at the top end of the field.
Another one of the biggest threats for the win will be the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MX2 squad. All three riders, Jago Geerts, Maxime Renaux and Thibault Benistant have what it takes to lead races. Belgian born Geerts of course has the biggest advantage being a very strong sand rider, but Renaux can perform on the soft stuff too, as he proved it in Valkenswaard last season where he finished second on the podium. And of course, Benistant will be full of confidence after his race one victory in Maggiora. So, all three riders could put on a show this weekend.
One of the biggest questions coming into the Dutch Grand Prix is whether or not we will see Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle makes his return. Before the MXGP of Great Britain, Vialle was involved in a crash which resulted in a small injury. While he tried to race in both Matterley Basin and Maggiora, this proved difficult, and the Frenchman made the decision to pull out. Now Vialle is down in 11th in the championship standings, 63 points down on the leader Mattia Guadagnini.
For Guadagnini the upcoming races will be a real test to see if the Italian can perform just as well on sand as he had in the hard pack races so far this season, as well as to see whether having the red plate add any extra pressure or whether the rookie will be able to keep it together and put in another two solid races and continue his podium success.
Of course, Honda 114 Motorsport’s Ruben Fernandez will also want to get in on the action and stay within the top three in the championship. Fernandez has shown his fierce side these past few races, getting involved in some strong battles for top positions in every race that he has lined-up for. The races in Oss will be another opportunity for the Spaniard to solidify himself as a title contender this season after some very good races so far.
Another rider who will be looking to put on his best performance will be Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay De Wolf, who will enter his home Grand Prix in the MX2 World Championship class for the first time. Two weeks ago, both De Wolf and Beaton had some good races, both finishing inside the top 10 and battling within the top 5 together at one stage too. For the De Wolf this will be an opportunity to shine and show what can be expected later in the season as he gets more confident.
