Beaton aspetta il suo momento dopo essere sopravvissuto al “grande successo” del Gran Premio di Gran Bretagna
Jed Beaton di Rockstar Energy Husqvarna sta mantenendo la calma nel suo ultimo tentativo di diventare il primo campione del mondo MX2 Australiano. Il 23enne ha segnato 7°, 12° e 7° nei primi tre round della stagione e si trova al 10° posto in classifica. Il pilota ufficiale Husqvarna ha sofferto di un contatto nella prima manche a Matterley Basin che lo ha costretto a un ritiro e dal quale è stato fortunato a non farsi male.
“Matterley non è andato affatto secondo i piani ed è stato un vero peccato perché quella pista mi piace molto ed era una buona occasione per ottenere dei punti”, ha riflettuto dopo il Gran Premio d’Italia a Maggiora domenica scorsa. “Mi sono sentito allo stesso modo oggi, ma è stata una settimana dopo un grande successo. Non vedo l’ora di avere due settimane di allenamento alle spalle. È solo l’inizio, sento che se posso essere solido per tre round, tornerò subito. Questo è il mio piano per ora”.
L’età di Beaton significa che il 2021 è la sua ultima possibilità di conquistare la MX2 dopo il podio, una prima vittoria in manche nel 2020 e il quarto posto in campionato. Non è stato in grado di mostrare lo stesso giro di passo di Tom Vialle, Maxime Renaux, Thibault Benistant e Mattia Guadagnini che finora hanno conquistato la bandiera a scacchi in questa stagione. “Considerando le circostanze [l’incidente nel Regno Unito] mi è mancato un po’, e gli altri ragazzi sono ovviamente forti ora, ma c’è ancora molta strada da fare e alla fine potrebbe essere il contrario”, ha detto. “Non sono troppo stressato. La cosa più importante è che oggi ho avuto due solide partenze e normalmente non è il mio forte. Semplicemente non mi sentivo nelle manche e dovremo lavorare su questo”.
Beaton non deve solo tenere d’occhio il campionato e i suoi rivali – l’attuale tabella rossa Guadagnini è già avanti di 46 punti – ma anche le sue prospettive per il 2022 e il passaggio obbligato nella divisione MXGP se decide di rimanere nel mondiale.

Beaton biding his time after surviving British Grand Prix ‘big hit’
Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Jed Beaton is keeping his calm in his last bid to become Australia’s first MX2 world champion. The 23-year-old has scored 7th, 12th and 7th in the first three rounds of the season and sits 10th in the standings. The Husqvarna factory rider suffered with a collision in the first moto at Matterley Basin that forced a DNF and from which he was lucky to avoid injury.
“Matterley didn’t go to plan at all and it was such a shame because I really like that track and it was a good chance to get some points,” he reflected after the Grand Prix of Italy at Maggiora last Sunday. “I felt the same about today but it was one week after a big hit. I’m just really looking forward to getting two weeks [training] under my belt. It’s only just the beginning I feel that if I can be solid for three rounds then I will be right back in it. That’s my plan for now.”
Beaton’s age means 2021 is his final chance to conquer MX2 after podium finishes, a first moto win in 2020 and championship slot of 4th. He hasn’t been able to show the same turn of pace as Tom Vialle, Maxime Renaux, Thibault Benistant and Mattia Guadagnini who have taken the chequered flags this season so far. “Considering the circumstances [the crash in the UK] I have been missing a bit, and the other guys are obviously strong now but there is a long way to go and by the end it could be the other way around,” he said. “I’m not too stressed. Most importantly today I had two solid starts and that’s not normally my forté. I just didn’t feel myself in the motos and we’ll need to work on that.”
Beaton not only has to keep an eye on the championship and his rivals – red plate holder Guadagnini is already 46 points ahead – but also his prospects for 2022 and the obligatory move to the MXGP division if he decides to remain in the world championship.
