Gajser mantiene la testa della classifica dopo il fango a Maggiora
Tim Gajser del Team HRC ha mantenuto la tabella rossa di leader del campionato, dopo che un temporale ha colpito la bellissima pista di Maggiora prima della sua seconda gara. Sfortunatamente, il tempo ha trasformato la pista nel nord Italia da un circuito incontaminato in una festa di fango, e ha reso la manche una battaglia per la sopravvivenza in condizioni estremamente difficili per tutti i piloti.
Entrando in gara, il pilota della Honda CRF450RW aveva vinto tre delle quattro manche finora in questa stagione, ma non è stato in grado di aumentare il suo bottino in quello che è stato un pomeriggio di due metà. Nella prima manche, la pista era asciutta con pochissime linee e questo ha reso estremamente difficile il sorpasso. Nonostante le pressioni sui piloti davanti per l’intera gara, Gajser ha ricevuto la bandiera a scacchi al quinto posto, esattamente dove ha tagliato il traguardo per la prima volta. È stata una manche frustrante, ma come a Matterley Basin dove il rischio di sorpasso era troppo alto, sperava di rifarsi in gara due.
Sfortunatamente, 30 minuti prima dell’inizio della gara, la tempesta di pioggia che aveva minacciato per tutto il giorno, finalmente si è materializzata. In pochi minuti, la pista è diventata scivolosa e ha reso la partenza ancora più critica, poiché i piloti hanno cercato di preservare la loro visione dal terreno fangoso delle altre moto. Per Gajser questa è diventata una proposta difficile poiché ha completato il primo giro al 11° posto, ma sapendo che ogni posizione sarebbe stata importante per mantenere la testa del campionato, ha abbassato la testa e si è messo al lavoro. Mostrando alcune eccellenti scelte di traiettoria, alla fine è riuscito a risalire fino al sesto posto, superando alcuni dei rivali per il titolo e assicurandosi la tabella rossa con i suoi 31 punti, sufficienti per il settimo posto.
Il prossimo round del campionato mondiale di motocross si svolgerà il 18 luglio nella nuova sede MXGP di Oss, nei Paesi Bassi. Il terreno sabbioso non era uno dei preferiti di Gajser, ma dopo aver lavorato duramente negli ultimi due periodi di bassa stagione, non vedrà l’ora di affrontare la nuova sfida e sperare di continuare la sua forma sulla sabbia che lo ha visto dominare la tripla partita a Lommel l’anno scorso.

È stata una giornata difficile, con il meteo e i risultati, ma sono ancora in testa al campionato quindi devo guardare agli aspetti positivi. Nella prima manche ho avuto una partenza decente ma non sono riuscito a farmi strada, quindi ho dovuto accontentarmi di un quinto posto, anche se sentivo di essere più veloce dei primi. Ancora una volta, ho lottato fuori dal cancello in gara due e con la forte pioggia che ha reso le cose difficili. Poi una pietra ha colpito i miei occhiali nel primo giro ed è stato davvero difficile perché ho dovuto lavorare ancora più duramente per fare i sorpassi, ma sono arrivato sesto e continuo a mantenere la tabella rossa. Sono entusiasta di andare a Oss perché è una nuova pista e mi sto divertendo a guidare sulla sabbia, quindi dovrebbe essere divertente.

A volte le cose non vanno proprio secondo i piani e questo è stato purtroppo uno di quei giorni. La cosa importante è stata la partenza in entrambe le gare come in gara uno, nessuno dei primi cinque si è passato l’un l’altro per tutta la manche quindi dove sei partito è dove sei finito. E poi in gara due, a causa della pioggia, la pista è cambiata completamente ed è stata una sfida completamente diversa con errori facili da commettere in condizioni scivolose. Nel complesso, tuttavia, dopo sei manche, Tim ne ha vinte tre e siamo in testa al campionato MXGP, quindi siamo contenti di come è andato il 2021 fino ad ora. Sappiamo che ci sono ancora molte gare da disputare e che inizieranno con Oss tra un paio di settimane, quindi continueremo a lavorare sodo e cercheremo di assicurarci che Tim continui a guidare il campionato.

Gajser maintains championship lead after muddy Maggiora
Team HRC’s Tim Gajser kept hold of the championship-leading red-plate, after a rain storm hit the beautiful Maggiora track before his second race. Unfortunately, the weather meant the track in northern Italy turned from a pristine circuit into a mud-fest, and it made the moto a battle for survival in the extremely difficult conditions for all riders.
Coming into the race, the Honda CRF450RW rider had won three out of the four motos so far this season but he was unable to add to his tally in what was a very much an afternoon of two halves. In the first moto, the track was dry with very few lines and that made passing extremely difficult. Despite pressuring the riders in front for the entire race, Gajser received the chequered flag in fifth place, exactly where he crossed the line for the first time. It was a frustrating moto, but like in Matterley Basin where the risk of passing was too great, he hoped to make up for it in race two.
Unfortunately, 30 minutes before the race was about to begin, the rain storm that had been threatening all day, finally materialised. Within minutes, the track became slick and slippery and it made the start even more critical, as the riders tried to preserve their vision from the muddy roost off other bikes. For Gajser this became a difficult proposition as he rounded the first lap in 11th place, but knowing that every position would be important in order to hold onto the championship lead, he put his head down and went to work. Showing some excellent line choices, he eventually worked his way up to sixth, passing some of title rivals and securing the red plate with his 31 points which was good enough for seventh overall.
The next round of the motocross world championship will take place on July 18th at the new MXGP venue of Oss, in the Netherlands. The sandy terrain wasn’t a favourite of Gajser’s, but after working hard in the past couple of off-seasons, he will look forward to the new challenge and hope to continue his form on sand that saw him dominant the triple-header at Lommel last year.

It was a difficult day, with the weather and the results but I’m still leading the championship so I have to look at the positives. In the first moto I had a decent start but I couldn’t work my way through the field so I just had to be happy with a fifth place, although I felt I was faster than those in front. Again, I struggled out of the gate in race two and with the heavy rain that made things hard. Then a rock hit my goggles in the first lap and that was really difficult because it meant I was having to work even harder to make passes but I made my way up to sixth and I still keep hold of the red plate. I am excited to go to Oss though as it’s a new track and I’m enjoying riding sand so it should be fun.

Sometimes things just don’t quite go to plan and this was unfortunately one of those days. The important thing was the start in both races as in race one, none of the top five made a pass on each other the entire moto so where you started is where you finished. And then in race two, due to the rain, the track completely changed and it was a totally different challenge with mistakes easy to make in the slippery conditions. Overall though, after six motos, Tim has won three of them and we lead the MXGP championship so we are happy with how 2021 has gone so far. We know there are still a lot of races to go and that starts with Oss in a couple of weeks, so we will all keep working hard and trying to make sure that Tim continues to lead the championship.
