HERLINGS E GUADAGNINI GARANTISCONO LA DOPPIA VITTORIA DELLA RED BULL KTM AL MXGP D’ITALIA

Le ripide colline e il cemento duro dello storico circuito del Maggiora Park hanno potuto accogliere le gare del Campionato del Mondo FIM per la prima volta dal Motocross delle Nazioni 2016 e per il primo evento Grand Prix dal 2015. Le condizioni calde e piovose hanno creato fango intorno al layout italiano stretto e difficile.

MXGP

Jeffrey Herlings ha dominato le prove cronometrate per la sua prima Pole Position della stagione di quasi quattro decimi di secondo su Tim Gajser. Jorge Prado è stato il terzo più veloce. Vincitore dell’ultimo round nel Regno Unito, Tony Cairoli, al 7° posto. È stato Prado a partire meglio nella prima gara ea circolare dietro al leader e vincitore Romain Febvre in quello che era un affare statico. Cairoli era 3° e Herlings ha dovuto rimontare fino al 6° dopo aver inizialmente perso tempo rimuovendo una pietra incastrata nel suo freno posteriore.

Un breve temporale poco prima della seconda manche ha rovesciato molta pioggia su Maggiora e ha assicurato che l’ultima gara della giornata sarebbe stata “fangosa”. Herlings ha fatto la migliore partenza e ha seguito Glenn Coldenhoff per 11 dei 17 giri. Ha superato il suo connazionale e ha vinto per quasi sette secondi. Il punteggio di 6-1 ha significato che ha legato ai punti, ma la seconda vittoria della manche ha definito la classifica del Grand Prix. A pari merito con 40 punti anche Cairoli che ha dovuto fare i conti con gli occhiali rotti prima di abbandonare definitivamente gli occhiali. Nonostante lo svantaggio, Cairoli è riuscito a salire fino al terzo posto e il suo 3-3 gli ha regalato il secondo podio consecutivo. Anche Prado stava correndo con i leader ma ha perso due posizioni negli ultimi due giri e il suo 2-7 lo ha proiettato al 4 ° posto assoluto.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing ha tutti e tre i suoi atleti tra i primi cinque nella classifica dei punti del campionato e l’equipaggio ha posseduto due dei tre round quest’anno.

Jeffrey Herlings: “La prima manche sembrava un disastro. Non sapevo cosa stesse fermando il freno posteriore, quindi ho dovuto sistemarlo e ho perso posizioni e una ventina di secondi. Ho quindi dovuto effettuare una ricarica della moto in ritardo. Ero dispiaciuto per questo e volevo davvero vincere la seconda gara, ma la pioggia è caduta così forte poco prima della partenza. È stato un po’ inaspettato e abbiamo dovuto prendere una decisione dell’ultimo minuto su pneumatici e occhiali. Le mie partenze sono state un po’ scarse oggi, ma la seconda manche è andata bene e sono arrivato terzo, dove ho tenuto gli occhiali per un po’. Avevo un piccolo distacco da Glenn e sapevo che arrivare ai piloti doppiati sarebbe stato un momento in cui puoi perdere ma anche guadagnare molto tempo: devi essere un po’ fortunato. Quindi ho attaccato in quel momento e ha portato al “complesso”. Abbiamo chiuso tanti punti in campionato quindi la giornata è iniziata e finita in modo sfortunato e fortunato. È bello entrare in Oss con una spinta di fiducia. Voglio ringraziare il team Red Bull KTM e il lavoro che hanno fatto, la moto era eccellente”.

Tony Cairoli: “Sono contento del podio ma non tanto della seconda manche perché avevo la velocità per guidare davanti. Il mio roll-off si è rotto a causa di un sasso e ho dovuto togliermi gli occhiali. I ragazzi si sono allontanati e io non sono riuscito a passare. Alla fine erano spariti. Di recente mi sono allenato molto nel fango, quindi il mio feeling era buono qui. Non vedo davvero l’ora che arrivino le gare sulla sabbia. È il mio terreno preferito. Speriamo di poter usare queste due settimane per creare un po’ più di condizionamento ed essere di nuovo davanti”.

Jorge Prado: “Nel complesso quarto posto e non siamo troppo lontani dal primo posto in campionato, quindi da questo punto di vista il GP è stato abbastanza buono. Mi sentivo abbastanza bene in pista ed è stata dura con molti dossi e solchi. Abbiamo avuto un ritmo davvero alto nella prima gara, ma la seconda è stata solo fango. Sono stato spinto un po’ largo nella seconda curva. Ero 5° per tutta la manche ma a due giri dalla fine ho commesso un paio di errori che mi sono costati due posizioni e ho perso il podio così. Sono davvero scontento dei miei ultimi tre giri. Non sono riuscito ad arrivare al punto di fare il passo in più per forzare un passaggio. Invece di mantenere la posizione, l’ho semplicemente persa”.

MX2

Una settimana dopo il suo primo podio nella sua stagione da rookie MX2, Mattia Guadagnini non è stato intimorito dalla prospettiva del suo Gran Premio di casa e ha guidato fino a una forte e costante 2a posizione dietro a Thibault Benistant nella prima manche. Il rookie è stato impeccabile nella seconda gara, conducendo dal primo all’ultimo giro e raggiungendo un nuovo momento clou della carriera. Oltre alla sua superiorità di giornata, l’italiano è stato anche in grado di impossessarsi della tabella rossa come nuovo leader del campionato del mondo.

Rene Hofer ha iniziato la prima gara tra i primi ma è stato colpito e poi travolto nelle curve tortuose di apertura.
Il campione del mondo MX2 Tom Vialle ha provato a tornare all’azione competitiva dopo aver saltato il Gran Premio di Gran Bretagna il fine settimana precedente. La mano destra fratturata del francese era migliorata ma era ancora troppo dolorante per le discese in discesa e i lunghi solchi di Maggiora e non ha potuto completare più di qualche giro della prima manche.

Mattia Guadagnini: “Questa è pazzesca. Non so cosa dire. Mi sento davvero bene. Ho fatto due buone partenze e non volevo prendere troppi rischi nella prima manche. Mantenere la calma e conquistare il 2° posto è stato sufficiente, anche se ho aspettato di vedere se riuscivo a superare Thibault nell’ultima parte della gara, ma era troppo veloce. Ho spinto forte per prendere il comando nel primo giro della seconda manche e poi ho corso la mia gara e mi sono divertito. Ho creato un gap e mi sono goduto gli ultimi giri. È fantastico vincere qui in Italia ed è stata anche una sorpresa prendere la tabella rossa. Oss è il prossimo e io sono abbastanza bravo nella sabbia, ci alleneremo e saremo pronti per ripartire”.

Rene Hofer: “Piuttosto nella media direi. Ho avuto una partenza decente nella prima gara, ma ho commesso un errore alla prima curva ed ero 15° credo. Ho faticato un po’ e sono arrivato 11°. Il secondo è stato molto meglio ed ero terzo e ho lottato per quella posizione per la maggior parte della gara; Non riuscivo proprio a superare Jago [Geerts]. Sono quasi passato, ma non sono riuscito a eseguire la mossa e i due ragazzi di F&H sono passati da dietro. Comunque non è stata una brutta gara e concludiamo un altro GP con un miglioramento della guida. Devo fare due buone partenze e mettere insieme due buone gare. Di sicuro possiamo migliorare su questo durante l’anno”.

Tom Vialle: “Ho avuto molto dolore nella sessione di prove. Quando stavo andando abbastanza lentamente andava bene, ma dopo pochi giri di gara era troppo. Bisognerà vedere come sarà la mano per l’Olanda”.

L’Oss Motocross Circuit accoglierà per la prima volta la MXGP mentre la sede si prepara per il Gran Premio dei Paesi Bassi il 18 luglio. Il quarto round sarà il primo di quattro incontri nei fine settimana consecutivi con viaggi in Repubblica Ceca, Lettonia e Belgio dopo la tappa olandese.

HERLINGS AND GUADAGNINI ENSURE DOUBLE RED BULL KTM VICTORY AT ITALIAN MXGP

 

The steep hills and hardpack of the historic Maggiora Park circuit was able to welcome FIM World Championship racing for the first time since the 2016 Motocross of Nations and for the first Grand Prix event since 2015. Warm and showery conditions created a slick, rutty and finally muddy affair around the narrow and tricky Italian layout.

 

MXGP

 

Jeffrey Herlings ruled Timed Practice for his first Pole Position of the season by almost four-tenths of a second over Tim Gajser. Jorge Prado was 3rd fastest. Winner of the last round in the UK, Tony Cairoli, in 7th. It was Prado who made the better start in the first race and circulated behind leader and winner Romain Febvre in what was a static affair. Cairoli was 3rd and Herlings had to fight back to 6th after he initially lost time removing a stone wedged into his rear brake system.

 

A brief thunderstorm just before the second moto dumped a lot of rain on Maggiora and ensured the final race of the day would be a ‘mudder’. Herlings made the best start and followed Glenn Coldenhoff for 11 of the 17 laps. He passed his countryman and won by almost seven seconds. The 6-1 scorecard meant he tied on points but the second moto win defined the Grand Prix ranking. Also equal on 40 points was Cairoli who had to deal with broken goggles before finally ditching the eyewear. Despite the disadvantage, Cairoli was able to ride to 3rd and his 3-3 gave him a second consecutive podium appearance. Prado was also running with the leaders but lost two places inside the final two laps and his 2-7 cast him to 4th spot overall.

 

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing have all three of their athletes in the top five of the championship points table and the crew have owned two of the three rounds this year.

 

Jeffrey Herlings: “The first moto felt like a disaster. I didn’t know what was stopping the rear brake so I had to sort it out and lost places and around twenty seconds. I then had to make a late moto charge. I was bummed about that and really wanted to go for the win in the second race but the rain fell so hard just before the start. It was a bit unexpected, and we had to make a last minute decision about tires and googles. My starts were off a bit today but the second moto was OK and I got into 3rd, where I saved my goggles for a while. I had a little gap to Glenn and I knew coming to the lapped riders would be a moment where you can lose but also gain a lot of time: you have to be a bit lucky. So I attacked at that moment and it led to the ‘overall’. We closed a lot of points in the championship so the day started and finished in an unlucky and lucky way. It’s good to head into Oss with a confidence boost. I want to give-it-up to the Red Bull KTM team and the job they did, the bike was excellent.”

 

Tony Cairoli: “I’m happy with the podium but not so much with the second moto because I had the speed to ride at the front. My roll-off broke due to a stone and I had to take off the goggles. The guys pulled away and I could not pass. Eventually they were gone. I’ve been training quite a lot in the mud recently, so my feeling was good here. I’m really looking forward to the sand races now. It’s my favorite ground. Hopefully we can use these two weeks to build up some more conditioning and be at the front again.”

 

Jorge Prado: “Overall P4 and we are not too far away from 1st place in the championship, so from this perspective the GP was quite OK. I was feeling quite good on the track and it was tough with plenty of bumps and ruts. We had a really high rhythm in the first race but the second was just a mudder. I got pushed a bit wide in the second corner. I was riding in 5th for the whole moto but with two laps to go I made a couple of mistakes that cost me two places and I lost the podium like that. I’m really unhappy with my last three laps. I couldn’t get to the point of making the extra step to force a pass. Instead of holding the position I just lost it.”

 

Dirk Gruebel, Team Manager: “Jeffrey started the GP quite conservatively but then had that issue with the stone in the rear brake and it seemed to get him quite angry! He then found two seconds a lap to close back to the guys and return to 6th, which is where he was until he had the mishap. He pushed hard and it paid-off at the end of the day. The second race was a complete gamble with the weather, the rain, the heavy mud and people struggled with goggles…but Jeffrey rode steady and won that moto. A 6-1 was good enough for the overall win and it’s great for him, his head and the team. We can see that Jeffrey’s confidence is growing and that’s really nice. He started the season in a solid way but this is the first win and it’s important.”

 

MX2

 

One week after his maiden podium result in his rookie MX2 season, Mattia Guadagnini was not over-awed by the prospect of his home Grand Prix and rode to a strong and steady 2nd position behind Thibault Benistant in the first moto. The rookie was faultless in the second race to lead from the first lap to the last and reached a new career highlight. As well as his superiority on the day the Italian was also able to seize the red plate as the new world championship leader.
