Fernandez cita l’accorto lavoro di sviluppo del team per il competitivo pacchetto MX2 Honda
Dopo il 2° e 3° posto nel Campionato Mondiale FIM Motocross 2021 MX2, Ruben Fernandez è il leader a sorpresa della classifica con la Honda CRF250R 114 Motorsports; la prima volta che la moto è in testa alla classifica dei punti MX2 da quando Tim Gajser è emerso dalla campagna 2015 con l’unico titolo Honda nella categoria.
Fernandez ha lottato con la coerenza e le prestazioni della Yamaha SDM Corse nel 2020 e la sua scelta di unirsi al team Honda relativamente nuovo dell’ex campionessa del mondo WMX Livia Lancelot (sostenuto da Giacomo Gariboldi) per il 2021 ha sollevato le sopracciglia. Lo spagnolo è stato comunque veloce in uscita e ha vantato velocità e competitività; evidenziato in modo appropriato dal suo spettacolare sorpasso su Mathys Boisrame all’ultima curva della prima manche del Gran Premio di Gran Bretagna domenica scorsa per finire secondo.
“Onestamente ho pensato la stessa cosa”, ha ammesso, quando gli è stato chiesto della possibile preoccupazione per il potenziale della Honda per il bottino MX2. “Ma mi ha sorpreso in modo positivo. Tutto lo sviluppo del motore e della moto è svolto dal team e hanno fatto un ottimo lavoro. Sono super felice di quello che ho e penso che i risultati lo dimostrino un po’. Per me è un miglioramento rispetto allo scorso anno, e non solo la moto ma anche il modo di lavorare. Sta venendo tutto insieme.”
114 Motorsports aveva precedentemente goduto della ribalta con gli australiani Hunter Lawrence e Mitch Evans, ma Fernandez, che ha 22 anni e ha almeno un altro anno nella classe, è il primo a portare una tabella rossa al set-up.

Fernandez cites shrewd team development work for competitive MX2 Honda package
After 2nd and 3rd place finishes in the 2021 MX2 FIM Motocross World Championship, Ruben Fernandez is the surprise leader of the standings with the 114 Motorsports Honda CRF250R; the first time the bike has headed the MX2 points table since Tim Gajser emerged from the 2015 campaign with Honda’s sole title in the category.
Fernandez struggled with consistency and performance of the SDM Corse Yamaha in 2020 and his choice to join former WMX World Champion Livia Lancelot’s relatively new Honda team (backed by Giacomo Gariboldi) for 2021 raised eyebrows. The Spaniard has nonetheless been quick out of the gate and has boasted speed and competitiveness; highlighted aptly by his spectacular overtaking move on Mathys Boisrame on the last corner of the first moto at the British Grand Prix last Sunday to finish 2nd.
“I honestly thought the same,” he admitted, when asked about possible concern over the potential of the Honda for MX2 spoils. “But it has surprised me in a good way. All the engine and bike development is done by the team and they’ve done a great job. I’m super-happy with what I have and I think the results show that a little bit. For me it’s an improvement from last year, and not only the bike but also the way to work. It’s all coming together.”
114 Motorsports had previously enjoyed prominence with Australians Hunter Lawrence and Mitch Evans but Fernandez, who is 22 and has at least another year in the class, is the first to bring a red plate to the set-up.
