Domenica si parte con il Mondiale Motocross 2021, prima tappa in Russia e ci saranno solo la MXGP e la MX2 che quest’anno ha tanti piloti che potrebbero puntare al titolo, ovviamente il più accreditato è Vialle, ma noi in Italia puntiamo su Mattia Guadagnini, un ragazzo che sa quello che sta facendo, ha quel modo di fare tranquillo e pacato fuori dalla pista, ma sappiamo che la sua forza è nella testa, calcolatore e pronto ad aspettare per sferrare l’attacco giusto, mettiamoci anche un pizzico di umiltà e avremo il pilota perfetto……non possiamo darlo come vincente perchè anche lui dice che deve imparare, ma se il passo dalla EMX250 alla MX2 è lieve, vuol dire che può tranquillamente viaggiare davanti e fare molta esperienza per portarlo ad un titolo mondiale!
Ho usato troppe parole pesanti? Bè, non credo, credo anche che tantissimi saranno li a vedere cosa farà Mattia, io ci credo e non tarderà nel darmi ragione, ha un maestro coi fiocchi, ma in pista e sulla moto c’è lui e solo lui sa come fare quando ci saranno le opportunità!

Mattia Guadagnini
Presentato come la prossima stella italiana, Mattia Guadagnini ha sia la migliore opportunità della sua breve carriera sia di assaggiare il “posto caldo” accanto all’idolo Tony Cairoli come parte della Red Bull KTM Factory Racing nel 2021. Le credenziali di Guadagnini sono molto promettenti: campione europeo EMX125 nel 2019 e secondo classificato EMX250 nel 2020, vincendo tre gare nella sua prima campagna su una motocicletta a 4 tempi da 250 cc. Il diciannovenne è l’unico debuttante della squadra per il 2021, ma segue una potente tradizione di entusiasmanti talenti per guidare la KTM 250 SX-F. Non essere sorpreso di vedere grandi cose.
Tony Cairoli deve essere un riferimento per te come giovane pilota italiano. Com’è essere nella stessa squadra?
Da quando ho iniziato ad andare in moto a quattro anni l’ho sempre guardato ed era il mio eroe. È sempre stato con l’equipaggio De Carli ed era il mio sogno un giorno far parte dello stesso set-up. Mi piaceva Tony per come guidava la moto e per come sembrava una persona lontana dalla pista. Quindi, essere qui a guidare con lui è fantastico! Tony è una persona aperta e molto amichevole. È stato strano per me perché l’ho sempre visto dall’esterno e non l’ho mai conosciuto veramente, ma ora è diverso attraverso il nostro lavoro. Trascorriamo molto tempo insieme e con la squadra e mi piace molto.
Ci si aspetta che tu sarai la prossima grande star italiana della MXGP. Come affronterai quella pressione e i riflettori nella tua prima stagione di GP?
Negli ultimi anni non abbiamo avuto un pilota che abbia raggiunto il livello di Tony, quindi solo essere nello stesso team Red Bull KTM Factory significa che le persone avranno aspettative su di me. So che avrò un po ‘di pressione ma non credo che sarà troppo per me, semplicemente perché questo è il mio primo anno e devo andare passo dopo passo e progredire. Penso che con un buon lavoro e buone persone intorno i risultati arriveranno. Avere Tony come compagno di squadra aiuterà. Voglio imparare il più possibile e so che le prime gare saranno difficili, ma poi voglio migliorare man mano che andiamo.
Il 2021 è solo il tuo secondo anno su una 250. Come hai trovato la KTM 250 SX-F ufficiale? In che modo è diverso da ciò che hai vissuto finora?
È un po ‘diverso ma hai la sensazione familiare che trovi nella versione di serie. Il motore ha un carattere diverso e l’assetto è leggermente alterato, come le sospensioni. Non è stato facile per i primi giri prendere confidenza con la moto ufficiale, ma una volta che hai cambiato mentalità, sembra così forte e così utile. Mi sentivo come se potessi spingere sempre di più. Ho notato la differenza anche con le sospensioni quando la pista diventava più tecnica. La moto ti ha aiutato ad andare sempre più veloce. È qualcosa di abbastanza folle per me. Non credo che potrei chiedere di meglio.
Hai il campione del mondo MX2 come compagno di squadra. Come lavorerai con lui?
Al momento non abbiamo avuto molti contatti perché non è stato troppo facile spostarsi. La sua ascesa dall’Europeo alla sua posizione è così bella. Mostra cosa si può fare quando sei con il team Red Bull KTM e nelle giuste condizioni. Era il miglior ragazzo nel 2020. Era bravo prima ma con quella squadra è diventato un campione del mondo. È ottimo. Spero solo di poter fare lo stesso! È un buon esempio da seguire.
Che tipo di circuito va bene per te?
Penso di essere molto bravo sulla sabbia ma non è il mio tipo di pista preferita. Mi piacciono molto i circuiti come Matterley Basin, con un buon hard-pack e grandi salti. Comunque, la sabbia è una superficie forte per me.
Alla fine del 2021 quale sarà stata per te una bella stagione?
Penso che finire tra i primi tre del mondiale non sarà poi così male! La cosa più importante è mostrare miglioramenti e non sentire troppa pressione. So che devo andare passo dopo passo e se sono vicino al primo posto negli ultimi round del campionato, allora sarebbe perfetto.

Billed as Italy’s next star in the making, Mattia Guadagnini gets both the best opportunity of his short career as well as to taste the ‘hot seat’ next to idol Tony Cairoli as part of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing in 2021. Guadagnini’s credentials are very promising: EMX125 European Champion in 2019 and EMX250 runner-up in 2020, winning three races in his first campaign on a 250cc 4-stroke motorcycle. The 19-year-old is the sole rookie in the team for 2021 but follows a potent tradition of exciting talent to steer the KTM 250 SX-F. Don’t be surprised to see great things.
Tony Cairoli must be a reference for you as a young Italian racer. What’s it like being in the same team as him?
Since I started riding bikes as a four-year old I always watched him and he was my hero. He’s always been with the De Carli crew and it was my dream to one day be part of the same set-up. I liked Tony for how he rode the bike and how he seemed as a person away from the track. So, to be here riding with him is amazing! Tony is an open person and very friendly. It was strange for me because I always saw him from the outside and never really knew him but now that’s different through our work. We’re spending a lot of time together and with the team and I really like it.
There is expectation that you will be Italy’s next big MXGP star. How will you cope with that pressure and spotlight in your first GP season?
In the last few years we haven’t had a rider that has reached anything like Tony’s level so just being in the same Red Bull KTM Factory team means people will have expectations of me. I know I will have some pressure but I don’t think it will be too much for me, purely because this is my first year and I have to go step-by-step and progress. I think with good work and good people around the results will come. Having Tony as a teammate will help. I want to learn as much as I can and I know the first races will be tricky but then I want to get better as we go.
2021 is only your second year on a 250. How have you found the KTM 250 SX-F factory bike? How is it different to what you have experience so far?
It’s a bit different but you have the familiar feeling that you find on the stock version. The engine has a different character and the set-up is altered a bit, such as the suspension. It wasn’t easy for the first few laps to get a feel for the factory bike but once you change your mindset then it feels so strong and so useful. I felt like I could push more and more. I noticed the difference with the suspension as well when the track was getting more technical. The bike helped you to go faster and faster. It’s something pretty crazy for me. I don’t think I could ask for anything better.
You have the MX2 world champion as a teammate. How will be working with him?
At the moment we have not had much contact because it hasn’t been too easy to move around. His rise from the European Championship to his position is so nice. It shows what can be done when you are with the Red Bull KTM team and in the right conditions. He was the best guy in 2020. He was good before but with that team he became a world champion. It’s great. I only hope I can do the same! He is a good example to follow.
What type of circuit is good for you?
I think I am very good in the sand but it’s not my favourite type of track. I really like circuits like Matterley Basin, with good hard-pack and big jumps. Anyway, the sand is a strong surface for me.
At the end of 2021 what will have been a good season for you?
I think finishing in the top three of the world championship will not be too bad! The most important thing is to show improvement and not feel too much pressure. I know I need to go step-by-step and if I’m near the front in the final rounds of the championship then this would be perfect.
