“Ti senti quasi sollevato” De Coster parla del successo del supercross 2021
Il direttore di KTM North America Motorsports Roger De Coster ha accennato alla ricca vena di competitività che ha portato il suo team Red Bull KTM a un quinto titolo 450SX in sette anni dopo che Cooper Webb ha confermato la sua seconda corona nel supercross all’inizio di questo mese.
Il 76enne belga dirige l’operazione gestita da Ian Harrison e schiera Webb, Marvin Musquin e il giovane promettente Max Vohland sulla KTM 250 SX-F. De Coster si è trasferito in KTM nel 2011 e ha contribuito a portare alla factory le loro prime vittorie e campionati nel supercross grazie al suo rapporto con Ryan Dungey e al lavoro di sviluppo con artisti del calibro di Ken Roczen e Webb.
“La sensazione di vincere non invecchia mai e quando non vinci sembra la fine del mondo. Mi piace vedere i miei ragazzi sul podio”, ha detto in una conferenza stampa Red Bull KTM prima del round di apertura del campionato AMA Pro Motocross 2021 in California. “Ora sono 5 su 7 per noi. Quando pensi a un’azienda come Honda; sono passati vent’anni da quando hanno vinto un campionato e anche loro lavorano sodo”.
“Ti senti quasi sollevato e grato”, ha aggiunto.
De Coster è stato in grado di collaborare con un Webb completamente in forma con risultati straordinari. Il 25enne ha vinto otto Main Event e ha conquistato altri cinque podi supercross in diciassette partite per guadagnare il primo posto per la seconda volta questa primavera. “Ha avuto di nuovo fortuna”, ha scherzato De Coster. “È molto speciale. Una grande differenza con gli altri piloti è che si guarda tanto quanto gli altri. Non trova scuse ed è forte mentalmente”.
Sebbene abbia dovuto affrontare un infortunio, Musquin è stato anche in grado di contribuire con cinque podi sulla strada per il nono posto in classifica. “A volte si sforza troppo, troppo”, ha valutato seriamente De Coster del suo fedele francese. “Vuole fare così bene che a volte lo mette un po’ in difficoltà. Quando può guidare libero è davvero fantastico.”
Harrison, da parte sua, insiste sul fatto che è l’etica del lavoro della squadra su tutta la linea che ha portato a così tanti bottini “indoors”; una caratteristica che devono prendere nella serie di motocross e poi sperare in buona fortuna contro i problemi di infortunio che hanno eliminato Webb dalla corsa nel 2019 e nel 2020. “Non hai fortuna in cose come questa”, ha detto il sudafricano del Corona ’21 SX. “Tutti fanno il loro lavoro al meglio delle loro capacità”.

“You almost feel relieved” De Coster talks 2021 supercross success
KTM North America Motorsports Director Roger De Coster hinted at the rich vein of competitiveness that drove his Red Bull KTM team to a fifth 450SX title in seven years after Cooper Webb confirmed his second supercross crown earlier this month.
The 76 year old Belgian directs the operation managed by Ian Harrison and fields Webb, Marvin Musquin and promising youngster Max Vohland on the KTM 250 SX-F. De Coster moved to KTM in 2011 and helped bring the factory their first supercross wins and championships thanks to his relationship with Ryan Dungey and development work with the likes of Ken Roczen and Webb.
“The feeling of winning never gets old, and when you don’t [win] it feels like the end of the world. I like to see my guys on the podium,” he said at a Red Bull KTM press conference prior to the opening round of the 2021 AMA Pro Motocross Championship in California. “It’s now 5 out of 7 for us. When you think of a company like Honda; it’s been twenty years since they won a championship and they work hard also.”
“You almost feel relieved, and thankful,” he added.
De Coster was able to collaborate with a fully fit Webb to tremendous effect. The 25 year old won eight Main Events and took another five supercross podiums from seventeen fixtures to earn the #1 plate for the second time this spring. “He got lucky again,” De Coster joked. “He’s very special. One big difference with the other riders is that he looks at himself as much as the rest. He doesn’t make excuses and he’s mentally strong.”
Although he had to deal with injury, Musquin was also able to contribute five podiums finishes on the way to 9th in the standings. “Sometimes he tries way to hard, too much,” De Coster earnestly assessed of his French KTM stalwart. “He wants to do so well that sometimes it handicaps him a little bit. When he can ride free he is really awesome.”
Harrison, for his part, insists that it’s the team’s work ethic across the board that has led to so many spoils ‘indoors’; a trait they need to take into the motocross series and then hope for good fortune against the injury woes that cast Webb out of the running in 2019 and 2020. “You don’t luck into things like this,” the South African said of the ’21 SX crown. “It’s everyone doing their job to the best of their ability.”
