Cairoli prenderà una decisione futura sulla MXGP in base al modulo 2021
È probabile che Tony Cairoli della Red Bull KTM chieda se il Campionato mondiale FIM Motocross 2021 sarà l’ultimo di una carriera praticamente senza precedenti dopo aver valutato la sua velocità e il suo potenziale nella prossima campagna 2021.
Cairoli ha vinto tre Gran Premi nel 2020 portando il suo conteggio in carriera a 92 e il secondo pilota più vittorioso nella storia di questo sport ed è apparso sul podio sette volte su diciotto round. Ha perso il 3° posto in classifica di campionato nella fase finale di Arco di Trento. I suoi successi nella sua dodicesima stagione nella categoria e diciassettesima nei GP sono stati raggiunti nonostante un infortunio al ginocchio sinistro.
Dopo un intervento chirurgico parzialmente correttivo nel dicembre del 2020, il siciliano ora vuole determinare come resiste l’articolazione e la sua competitività si colloca contro il resto del campo MXGP prima di decidere se il numero 222 sarà al cancello per il 2022.
“Voglio vedere se posso ancora migliorare, ma so che è improbabile che il livello di prestazione salga”, ha ammesso. “Molto dipende dalle mie condizioni e dal ginocchio. Ecco perché, in questo momento, non so dove mi trovo [con velocità e sensazione] perché ancora non riesco a spingere davvero a causa di questo infortunio che mi segue. “
“L’anno scorso è stato molto difficile per me, ma penso che se il mio ginocchio può essere in una forma un po ‘migliore per il 2021, allora dovrei essere in grado di lottare per il campionato”, ha aggiunto. “Questo è il mio obiettivo e poi la prossima stagione dipende da come mi sento.”
Cairoli ha rinnovato il suo contratto con la Red Bull KTM e la fazione De Carli della squadra la scorsa estate. Corre con Claudio De Carli e il suo assetto dal 2004, ma l’equipaggio ha compiuto un altro passo verso una “era post Cairoli” con la firma del promettente talento italiano Mattia Guadagnini, che quest’anno fa il suo debutto in MX2.

Cairoli to make MXGP future decision based on 2021 form
Red Bull KTM’s Tony Cairoli is likely to make a call on whether the 2021 FIM Motocross World Championship will be the last of a virtually unparalleled career after assessing his speed and potential in the forthcoming 2021 campaign.
Cairoli won three Grands Prix in 2020 to take his career tally to 92 and the second highest in the history of the sport and appeared on the podium seven times from eighteen rounds. He lost 3rd place in the championship standings at the final round in Arco di Trento. His achievements in his twelfth season in the category and seventeenth in GPs was accomplished in spite of an injured left knee.
After partially corrective surgery in December of 2020 the Sicilian now wants to determine how the joint resists and his competitiveness ranks against the rest of the MXGP field before deciding if #222 will make the gate for 2022.
“I want to see if I can still improve but I know the level of performance is unlikely to go up,” he admitted. “A lot depends on my condition and the knee. That’s why, right now, I don’t know where I am [with speed and feeling] because I still cannot really push because of this injury following me around.”
“Last year was very difficult for me but I think if my knee can be in a bit better shape for 2021 then I should be able to fight for the championship,” he added. “This is my goal and then the next season depends on how I feel.”
Cairoli renewed his contract with Red Bull KTM and the De Carli faction of the squad last summer. He has raced with Claudio De Carli and his set-up since 2004 but the crew took another step towards a ‘post Cairoli era’ with the signature of promising Italian talent Mattia Guadagnini, who makes his MX2 debut this year.
