Liam Everts è pronto a rilevare l’azienda di famiglia … vincendo titoli

La stella emergente del motocross Liam Everts e suo padre Stefan, una vera leggenda di questo sport, parlano della storia ricca di trofei della famiglia e degli obiettivi per il 2021.

Il nome Everts ha un certo status nei circoli di motocross. Harry Everts è stato un quattro volte campione del mondo, mentre il figlio Stefan ha conquistato il titolo mondiale in 10 occasioni in quattro diverse classi.
Ora una terza generazione della famiglia belga, il sedicenne Liam, ha iniziato la sua ricerca per lasciare il segno nella disciplina e continuare una splendida relazione familiare nello sport.
Ecco cosa hanno detto padre e figlio sul seguire le orme e sulla caccia ai titoli mondiali.

Portare il nome di Everts è qualcosa di speciale. Come gestisci la pressione?
Liam: Certo, il mio cognome porta con sé pressione. Ma una volta che inizio a correre, scompaio nella mia bolla e mi concentro solo su me stesso, sulla mia moto e sul circuito. Ma resta qualcosa di speciale.
Stefan: Ho sentimenti contrastanti al riguardo. Da un lato, sono orgoglioso che Liam abbia seguito non solo le mie orme, ma anche quella di suo nonno, mantenendo vivo il nome di Everts nel motocross ma, d’altra parte, sono anche molto consapevole dei rischi del nostro sport comporta. Mi preoccupo, credimi, e non voglio che si ferisca seriamente.

Tuo padre è un maestro severo?
Liam: Papà è qualcuno che guardo moltissimo, ma è ancora mio padre. È severo quando deve esserlo. Mi mette al mio posto ogni tanto quando faccio qualcosa di sbagliato. Poi spetta a me trarre insegnamento da quelle cose negative e cercare di prevenirle la prossima volta.
Stefan: Faccio da mentore a Liam in tutto ciò che fa e cerco di evitare i rischi il più possibile. Fin dal suo primo giorno in moto, ho sempre dato la priorità alla sicurezza. Gli do sempre la mia onesta opinione, lavoriamo insieme sui suoi punti deboli ed evitiamo di andare troppo veloci. Non voglio esercitare alcuna pressione extra su di lui perché è già lì. So come si sente. Anche mio padre era un nome familiare. E anche lui e io ci siamo avvicinati all’intera faccenda in modo molto costante. Di conseguenza, sono stato in grado di esibirmi ai massimi livelli per molto tempo.

Liam è destinato a battere i tuoi 10 titoli mondiali, Stefan?
Stefan: Sarebbe meraviglioso se diventasse mai campione del mondo. Tre generazioni … questo è senza precedenti! Lo spero davvero. Ma eguagliare il conteggio di suo nonno sarebbe anche un risultato straordinario.

Quali sono i tuoi obiettivi per il 2021?
Liam: L’obiettivo è costruire, cosa non facile, visto che molti piloti stanno tornando dalla MX2 all’EMX250. Sarà molto difficile. Ma sono abbastanza sicuro che la pazienza e il duro lavoro ci metteranno sulla mappa. È tutto lì. È solo questione di tempo prima di iniziare a posare il puzzle e adattare ogni piccolo pezzo.
Stefan: C’è molto lavoro davanti a noi, ovviamente. Liam ha bisogno di acquisire ancora molta esperienza e imparare a comportarsi meglio sotto la pressione che il suo nome porta. Ma la passione c’è, insieme al duro lavoro e alla disciplina. Ha anche il sentimento, il talento e l’intuizione incorporati nel suo DNA.

Stai guidando in una classe superiore quest’anno, l’EMX250. Ti senti all’altezza?
Liam: Sì. Una classe superiore in questa stagione. La motivazione è lì, dobbiamo solo aspettare un po ‘più a lungo prima di poter ripartire. Il che significa allenarsi duramente ora e tirare fuori tutte le fermate nelle competizioni!
Stefan: È importante non andare avanti con aspettative troppo grandi, perché rimarrai deluso. Se vogliamo essere realistici, dovremmo puntare a un posto tra i primi cinque. E, chissà, ogni tanto può succedere qualcosa di inaspettato. Sarà un viaggio infernale!

Ti stai allenando duramente. Il tuo braccio è completamente guarito, allora?
Liam: Sto dedicando molte ore in Belgio e nei Paesi Bassi per sentirmi il più a mio agio possibile sulla mia moto, per aumentare la mia velocità e arrivare alla linea di partenza completamente preparato quando finalmente il cancello scende di nuovo. Il mio braccio è completamente guarito. Non mi disturba più. La placca di metallo è ancora presente, ma abbiamo deciso di rimuoverla al termine della stagione.
Stefan: Stiamo facendo progressi su tutti i fronti. Liam sta lentamente diventando un giovane ora, e nell’ultimo anno ha fatto dei passi da gigante, sia mentalmente che fisicamente. Il nostro piano? Essere pazienti e lasciare che tutte le cose arrivino a tempo debito. L’ultima cosa che voglio è che subisca un grave infortunio nella fase di sviluppo della sua carriera. La sua ultima caduta non è stata colpa sua, ma un problema tecnico alla moto. Come pilota, è di fondamentale importanza rendersene conto. Perché anche negli ultimi anni ha impiegato così tante ore di allenamento e chilometri.

Now a third generation of the Belgian family, 16-year-old Liam, has begun his quest to make his own mark in the discipline and continue a stunning family affair in the sport.

Here’s what the father and son had to say about following in footsteps and chasing world titles.

Bearing the Everts name is something special. How do you handle the pressure?

Liam: Sure, my last name brings pressure with it. But once I start racing, I disappear into my bubble and only focus on myself, my bike and the circuit. But it remains something special.

Stefan: I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, I’m proud about Liam following not just in my footsteps, but his grandfather’s, as well, keeping the Everts name alive in motocross but, on the other hand, I’m also very aware of the risks our sport entails. I do worry, believe me, and I don’t want him to get seriously hurt.

 

Is your father a strict tutor?

Liam: Dad is someone I look up to tremendously, but he’s still my father. He is strict when he needs to be. He puts me in my place every now and then when I do something wrong. Then it’s up to me to draw lessons from those negative things and to try and prevent them the next time.

Stefan: I mentor Liam in everything he does and try to avoid risks as much as possible. From his very first day on a bike, I have always prioritised safety. I always give him my honest opinion, we work on his weak points together and avoid going too fast. I don’t want to put any extra pressure on him because it’s there already. I know how it feels. My father was a household name as well. And him and me also approached the whole thing in a very steady manner. As a result, I was able to perform at the highest level for a long time.

Is Liam destined to beat your 10 world titles, Stefan?

Stefan: It would be wonderful if he would ever become world champion. Three generations… that’s unprecedented! I really do hope so. But equalling his grandfather’s tally would also be an amazing achievement.

 

What are your goals for 2021?

Liam: The goal is to build, which won’t be easy, since a lot of riders are returning from MX2 to EMX250. It’s going to be very hard. But I’m pretty sure that patience and hard work will put us on the map. Everything’s there. It’s only a matter of time before we start laying the puzzle and have every little piece fit.

Stefan: There’s a lot of work ahead of us, obviously. Liam needs to gain a lot of experience still and learn to perform better under the pressure his name brings. But the passion is there, along with the hard work and the discipline. He also has the feeling, the talent and the insight embedded in his DNA.

You’re riding in a higher class this year, the EMX250. Feel up to it?

Liam: Yes. A higher class this season. The motivation is there, we just have to sit it out a little while longer before we can get going again. Which means training hard now and pulling out all the stops in the competitions!

Stefan: It’s important not to go in with too great expectations, because you’re only going to get disappointed. If we’re being realistic, we should be aiming at a place in the top five. And, who knows, something unexpected may happen once in a while. It’s going to be one hell of a ride!

 

You’re training hard. Your arm’s completely healed, then?

Liam: I’m putting in a lot of hours in Belgium and the Netherlands to feel as comfortable as possible on my bike, to boost up my speed and come to the starting line fully prepared when the gate finally drops again. My arm is fully healed. It doesn’t trouble me anymore. The little metal plate is still in, but we decided to have it removed after the season ends.

Stefan: We’re making headway on all fronts. Liam is slowly becoming a young man now, and over the past year he’s taken some giant steps, both mentally and physically. Our plan? To be patient and let all things come in good time. The last thing I want is for him to suffer a severe injury in the development phase of his career. His most recent fall wasn’t his fault, but a technical problem with the bike. As a rider, it is crucially important to realise that. Because he’s put in so many training hours and kilometres during these past years, too.
