David Luongo, CEO di Infront Motor Racing, commenta il calendario MXGP 2021 rivisto e ulteriori ritardi
Una terza versione del programma del campionato mondiale FIM MXGP è imminente poiché i promotori di Infront Motor Racing continuano a destreggiarsi tra il panorama dei titoli delle restrizioni governative su eventi sportivi, raduni pubblici e controlli alle frontiere. Inizialmente previsto in Oman a marzo, l’MXGP si è poi trasferito nella nuova sede del GP d’Olanda, Oss a maggio, e ora è stato riportato a un weekend di apertura in Russia a metà giugno. Il viaggio verso est sarà seguito da visite a Matterley Basin nel Regno Unito e al circuito di Maggiora in Italia per la prima volta dal 2015.
“Sono state due settimane di lavoro molto complicato perché modificare una gara significa che le cose cambiano molto per un’altra e il viaggio necessario”, ha rivelato Luongo. “È stato un periodo pazzesco ma, devo dire, un po ‘meglio rispetto alla situazione dell’anno scorso poiché abbiamo ancora molti organizzatori determinati a organizzare eventi con la presenza del pubblico e, rimandando le gare più tardi, c’è speranza che possono accadere. Possiamo solo aggirare ciò che abbiamo e, se necessario, dobbiamo passare al Piano B, al Piano C, al Piano D e così via. “
Il capo dell’IMR ha ammesso che stanno prendendo di mira un minimo di diciotto eventi nel 2021 e sperano di evitare una ripetizione del 2020 in cui almeno cinque circuiti hanno organizzato triple headers, ma ha anche ammesso che è “troppo presto per dire” se gare back-to-back nella stessa sede potrebbe essere un’altra possibilità. MXGP manterrà lo stesso formato 2020 per i Gran Premi, tuttavia, con MX2 e MXGP che si disputano la domenica e il campionato europeo EMX il sabato, il che significa che le manche di qualificazione sono state nuovamente abbandonate. “La gara d’oltremare verrà rimandata alla fine della stagione, dove speriamo che la situazione per i viaggi internazionali possa essere migliore”, ha aggiunto.
L’aggiunta di Maggiora al roster è stata una sorpresa, viste le problematiche ambientali che circondavano il sito e le difficoltà di riportare il Gran Premio nella storica struttura. Ironia della sorte, le restrizioni imposte dalla pandemia significano che il numero limitato di pubblico e paddock ha permesso il via libera per il ripetersi delle gare, “con una frequenza controllata è molto più facile correre di nuovo lì” ha detto Luongo.
L’MXGP si avvicina al suo ultimo inizio in assoluto e probabilmente dovrà affrontare un pesante rotolo di date fino alla fine dell’autunno. Infront Motor Racing ha svolto un ammirevole lavoro di salvataggio nel 2020, ma le possibilità di eventi senza folla e maggiore incertezza significano un’altra prospettiva difficile per il 2021. “Un secondo ‘anno Covid’? È un disastro, non ho altre parole “, ha spiegato Luongo. “Se gestisci una serie o uno sport e non riesci a metterlo in moto, influisce sulle squadre, sui piloti, su tutti. Abbiamo la responsabilità di farlo se dovessimo perdere per due anni. Dobbiamo farlo per il campionato e per gli organizzatori, se no poi butti via trent’anni di lavoro ”.

Infront Motor Racing CEO David Luongo comments on revised 2021 MXGP calendar and further delays
A third version of the FIM MXGP World Championship schedule is imminent as promoters Infront Motor Racing continue to juggle the titling landscape of government restrictions on sporting events, public gatherings and border controls. Initially due to start in Oman in March, MXGP then moved to new Dutch GP venue Oss in May and has now being shuffled back to an opening weekend in Russia in mid-June. The trip east will be followed by visits to Matterley Basin in the UK and the Maggiora circuit in Italy for the first time since 2015.
“It has been two weeks of very complicated work because to modify one race means things change a lot for another and the travel involved,” Luongo revealed. “It’s been a crazy time but, I have to say, a bit better than the situation last year as we still have a lot of organisers that are determined to hold events with public in attendance and by pushing the races back later there is hope that they can happen. We can only work around what we have and, if necessary, we have to move into Plan B, Plan C, Plan D and so on.”
The IMR boss admitted that they are targeting a minimum of eighteen events in 2021 and hope to avoid a repeat of 2020 where at least five circuits staged triple headers but he also conceded that it’s “too early to say” whether back-to-back races at the same venue could be another possibility. MXGP will keep the same 2020 format for Grands Prix however, with MX2 and MXGP run on Sundays and the EMX European Championship on Saturdays meaning Qualification Heats have again been abandoned. “The overseas race will be pushed back to the end of the season where we hope the situation for international travel might be better,” he added.
The addition of Maggiora to the roster was a surprise, considering the environmental issues that surrounded the site and the difficulties of bringing Grand Prix back to the historic facility. Ironically the restrictions forced by the pandemic means the limited numbers of public and paddock permitted a green light for the racing to reoccur, “with controlled attendance it is much easier to race there again” Luongo said.
MXGP moves into its latest ever start and is likely to face a heavy roll of dates well into the end of the autumn. Infront Motor Racing performed an admirable salvage job in 2020 but the possibilities of crowd-less events and more uncertainty means another tough outlook for 2021. “A second ‘Covid year’? It’s a disaster, I have no other words,” Luongo explained. “If you manage a series or a sport and you cannot get it started then it affects teams, riders, everybody. We have a responsibility to do this if it we are the ones to lose for two years. We have to do it for the championship and the organisers, if not then you throw away thirty years of work.”
