Sensazioni contrastanti nel team Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 dopo la gara di apertura a Riola Sardo, in Italia. Felice della vittoria di Jago Geerts nella MX2, deluso per l’infortunio di Maxime Renaux, che si è lussato la spalla sinistra.
La stagione europea del motocross è iniziata domenica a Riola Sardo. Il Team Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 è arrivato in Sardegna con due dei loro tre piloti: Jago Geerts (20) e Maxime Renaux (20). Thibault Benistant (18) è rimasto a casa con una clavicola rotta. Il francese sarà raggiunto in infermeria dal connazionale. Renaux è caduto durante le prove cronometrate, domenica mattina e si è lussato una spalla. Maxime visiterà il suo medico lunedì, per vedere esattamente quanti danni ci sono.
Il proprietario del team Hans Corvers: “Abbiamo tre piloti e già due di loro sono fuori per infortuni. Non è l’inizio della stagione che ci aspettavamo. Fortunatamente, il campionato del mondo FIM inizia solo il 23 maggio ad Oss. Thibault e Maxime hanno ancora abbastanza tempo per riprendersi. ”
Jago Geerts ha sofferto di braccia dure all’inizio della gara MX2 e ha deciso di non affrettare le cose. Il vice campione del mondo si è preso il suo tempo per trovare un buon ritmo e ha seguito l’italiano Lapucci, che ha ottenuto l’holeshot. A tre giri dalla fine, Geerts ha deciso di andare in testa. Geerts ha avuto una buona partenza con la sua YZ250FM nella Superfinal, in cui ha dovuto combattere contro i piloti MXGP sulle loro potenti moto 450. Sfortunatamente, il belga ha fermato la sua moto – quando era al sesto posto – pochi giri dopo ed è sceso in tredicesima posizione. Geerts si è raggruppato ed è riuscito bene a finire all’ottavo posto.
Jago Geerts: “È stato bello correre di nuovo. Anche se ho sofferto di un arm pump. È un problema che si ripresenta all’inizio della stagione. Quindi, niente di cui preoccuparsi. In queste gare di preseason è importante vedere se stiamo andando nella direzione giusta. La risposta è: sì, io e la moto. Rimarrò in Sardegna questa settimana per allenarmi e provare ancora qualche cosa. Domenica correrò di nuovo ad Alghero “.
Maxime Renaux: “Ho fatto subito il miglior tempo e ho fatto un altro giro veloce. Ma ho commesso un piccolo errore sul salto e sono atterrato un po ‘troppo lontano. Sono stato sbalzato oltre il manubrio e mi sono slogato la spalla sinistra quando sono caduto a terra. Domani mattina visiterò il mio medico. Non credo che avrò bisogno di un intervento chirurgico, perché non ho molto dolore e il fisioterapista è stato in grado di rimettere a posto la mia spalla abbastanza rapidamente “.

The European motocross season kicked off in Riola Sardo, on Sunday. The Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team arrived in Sardinia with two of their three riders: Jago Geerts (20) and Maxime Renaux (20). Thibault Benistant (18) stayed at home with a broken collarbone. The Frenchman will be joined in the infirmary by his compatriot. Renaux crashed during time practice, Sunday morning and dislocated his shoulder. Maxime will visit his doctor on Monday, to see exactly how much damage there is.
Team owner Hans Corvers: “We have three riders, and already two of them are out with injuries. Not the start of the season we were expecting. Luckily, the FIM world championship only starts on May 23rd in Oss. Thibault and Maxime still have enough time to recover.”
Jago Geerts suffered from arm pump at the beginning of the MX2 race and decided not to rush things. The vice world champion took his time to find a good rhythm and followed the Italian Lapucci, who got the holeshot. Three laps from then end, Geerts decided to go for the lead. His first attempt, was the right one. First victory of 2021.
Geerts got a good start on his YZ250FM in the Superfinal, in which he had to battle against the MXGP-riders on their powerful 450-bikes. Unfortunately, the Belgian stalled his bike – when riding in sixth place – a few laps later and dropped to P13. Geerts regrouped and nicely managed to finish in eighth place.
Jago Geerts: “It felt great to race again. Even if I suffered from arm pump. It’s a reoccuring problem in the beginning of the season. So, nothing to worry about. In this preseason races it’s important to see if we are going in the right direction. The answer is: yes, we are. Both the bike and myself. I’m staying in Sardinia this week to train and test some more things on the bike. On Sunday I will race again in Alghero.”
Maxime Renaux: “I immediately set the fastest time and went for another fast lap. But I made a small mistake on the table top and landed a bit to far. I was thrown over the handlebars and dislocated my left shoulder when hitting the ground. I will visit my doctor tomorrow morning. I don’t think I will need surgery, because I don’t have that much pain and the physio was able to put my shoulder back in place again pretty quickly.”
