La stagione europea del motocross prenderà il via domenica a Riola Sardo. In Sardegna saranno presenti due piloti del Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team: Jago Geerts (20) e Maxime Renaux (20). Thibault Benistant (18) non partirà a causa di una clavicola rotta.
Il team Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 ha subito un restyling durante l’inverno e sembra più forte che mai. Jago Geerts (vice campione del mondo MX2 nel 2020) è ancora a bordo e guiderà la squadra in questa stagione. Di nuovo in squadra: Maxime Renaux (terzo in MX2 nel 2020), che ha già corso per Hans Corvers, la sua squadra nel 2015, quando ha conquistato il titolo mondiale junior FIM 125cc. Terzo e completamente nuovo pilota del team: Thibault Benistant, campione europeo degli ultimi anni 250cc.
Con il mondiale già rinviato al 23 maggio, causa covid, la gara di Riola Sardo arriva abbastanza presto nella stagione. Il team manager Marnicq Bervoets: “Speravo che avrebbero posticipato alle gare di preseason anche in Italia, ma non l’hanno fatto. Si correrà a Riola Sardo (28/2), Alghero (7/3) e forse Mantova (14/3). Dopo quelle gare italiane c’è un gap fino a Lacapelle (25/4), il che rende molto difficile per i piloti preparare la loro stagione. Non dovrebbero nemmeno essere in forma troppo presto. ”
Geerts e Renaux guideranno la loro YZ250FM domenica a Riola. Nessuna gara per Benistant al primo turno degli Internazionali d’Italia in Sardegna. Il francese è caduto durante il giro di riscaldamento del suo allenamento a Riola Sardo due settimane fa e si è rotto una clavicola. Bervoets: “Un peccato. Ma se dove succedere, meglio adesso che durante il mondiale. Thibault è stato operato in Francia e se tutto andrà come previsto, tornerà in sella a metà marzo “.
Con Geerts, Renaux e Benistant il team Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 ha un entusiasmante schieramento di tre piloti, con un solo obiettivo nel 2021: il titolo mondiale.
Bervoets: “Il nostro obiettivo è davvero molto chiaro. Dopo un terzo posto nel 2019 e un secondo posto nel 2020, puntiamo a finire in cima alla lista.

The European motocross season will kick off in Riola Sardo, on Sunday. Two riders of the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team will be present in Sardinia: Jago Geerts (20) and Maxime Renaux (20). Thibault Benistant (18) won’t start because of a broken collarbone.
The Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team had a makeover during the winter and looks stronger than ever. Jago Geerts (vice world champion MX2 in 2020) is still aboard and will spearhead the squad this season. Back in the team: Maxime Renaux (third in MX2 in 2020), who already raced for Hans Corvers his team back in 2015, when he clinched the FIM junior world title 125cc. Third and completely new rider in the team: Thibault Benistant, last years European champion 250cc.
Early start
With the world championship already been postponed until May 23, due of covid, the race in Riola Sardo comes pretty early in the season. Team manager Marnicq Bervoets: “I was hoping that they would postpone the preseason races in Italy too, but they didn’t. We will race in Riola Sardo (28/2), Alghero (7/3) and maybe Mantova (14/3). After those Italian races there is a gap until Lacapelle (25/4), which makes it very difficult for the riders to prepare their season. They shouldn’t be in shape too early either.”
Geerts and Renaux will ride their YZ250FM in Riola on Sunday. No Benistant in action at the first round of the Internazionali d’Italia in Sardinia. The Frenchman crashed during the warm-up lap of his training in Riola Sardo two weeks ago and broke his collarbone. Bervoets: “A bummer. But if it had to happen, better now than during the world championship. Thibault had surgery in France and if everything goes as planned, he will be back on the bike mid-March.”
World title
With Geerts, Renaux and Benistant the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team has an exciting three-rider line-up, with only one goal in 2021: the world title.
Bervoets: “Our goal is, indeed, very clear. After a third place in 2019 and a second place in 2020, we are aiming to finish on the top of the box.
