GAJSER & GARIBOLDI: “UN RIDER FELICE È UN RIDER VELOCE”

Dopo aver vinto il suo quarto campionato del mondo MXGP e con l’ultima gara della stagione in Italia ormai alle sue spalle, abbiamo incontrato il pilota del Team HRC Tim Gajser e il team boss Giacomo Gariboldi riguardo al loro anno di corse. E come si stanno preparando per la loro quinta vittoria in campionato, sostenuta da Motul.

Tim, congratulazioni per la tua quarta vittoria in campionato! La sensazione di vincere il quarto è toccante quanto vincere la prima?
Tim: Grazie mille. È solo una sensazione incredibile vincere quattro titoli mondiali. E soprattutto vincendoli back to back. Non è stato facile. Ogni campionato che vinci è davvero difficile. C’è molta pressione. Perché quando vinci una volta, tutti si aspettano che tu vinca di nuovo. 

Giacomo, ovviamente è un grande traguardo per Tim, ma cosa significa per te come team manager?
Giacomo: Penso che sia lo stesso tipo di sensazione per il team manager. Da parte mia, non ero sulla moto, ma ero in cima alla squadra ogni giorno, e sono le stesse sensazioni ed emozioni. È stato fantastico ottenere il primo titolo. È stato qualcosa di incredibile. Ma poi quando abbiamo vinto di nuovo, ci siamo resi conto di aver fatto qualcosa di veramente eccezionale. Confermare è sempre più difficile che vincere la prima volta. Stiamo confermando anno dopo anno. Quattro titoli in sei stagioni non sono qualcosa che ho visto così spesso nel motorsport. Penso che sia stato un grande, grande risultato e ne siamo molto orgogliosi.

Ovviamente questo non è stato un anno ideale per il motorsport. Quanto hai trovato difficile quest’anno?
Giacomo: È stata dura per tutti. Mi associo a quanto ho detto in altre interviste, quest’anno dovevamo vincere delle gare, ma dovevamo anche mantenere tutto l’equipaggio sano e salvo, quindi abbiamo avuto la doppia sfida per tutta la stagione. E l’abbiamo fatto, il che è fantastico. Per i piloti correre tre volte in una settimana è stata molto dura. L’ho detto all’epoca, ma penso che il pilota che vincerà questa volta sia il pilota più completo di sempre, perché deve essere mentalmente molto forte, veloce e in forma per continuare a correre tre volte a settimana. Penso che ora abbiamo l’atleta più completo in questo sport.

Tim: È stato un anno impegnativo per tutti. Abbiamo iniziato la stagione molto forte, poi abbiamo avuto una lunga pausa a causa del Covid. Non abbiamo corso per circa cinque mesi. Per ogni pilota sembrava una bassa stagione. Non sapevamo cosa fare perché era una novità per tutti, soprattutto per quanto riguarda l’allenamento. Non volevamo sovrallenarci. Era davvero importante avere un equilibrio tra allenamento e recupero. È stato un anno strano e non è stato facile fare 11 gare in due mesi. È stata dura per tutti, ma tutto è andato bene e abbiamo vinto un altro titolo.

I protocolli Covid hanno comportato modifiche al formato delle gare. Come hai affrontato i cambiamenti?
Tim: All’inizio, non mi piaceva molto tornare a un programma di un giorno. Mi piace avere due giorni per avere molto tempo in pista, regolare la moto e fare una gara di qualificazione prima di correre. Adesso era tutto così veloce e intenso. Sicuramente non è stato facile adattarsi a questo. Abbiamo iniziato a segnare in modo coerente e ci stavamo davvero lavorando. La seconda parte della stagione è stata fenomenale, soprattutto a Lommel. Sapevamo di essere veloce e abbiamo dedicato molte ore all’allenamento e ai test, ma abbiamo dovuto portare quell’atteggiamento dall’allenamento alla gara.

Giacomo: Dall’esterno è stato bello vedere la gara di un giorno perché tutto era concentrato in poche ore e non devi aspettare il sabato per non avere punti. Si entra in pista la mattina e dopo poche ore si hanno già i risultati.

Dopo il Covid, cose come questa rimarranno?
Giacomo: Per il prossimo anno il calendario è già pronto per la situazione Covid e credo che sarà così per almeno un altro anno. Tuttavia, dobbiamo cercare di adattare la prossima stagione alla situazione nel mondo. Potrebbe non essere esattamente la stessa cosa, ma penso che ci andremo molto vicino.

Negli ultimi cinque o sei anni hai sviluppato una formula vincente. Qual è la tua strategia per vincere?

Giacomo: Rendere felice il pilota [ride]. Ho sentito qualcuno dire alcune settimane fa “sapete ragazzi, sono geloso quando entro nella vostra tenda da sole perché vedo tutti sorridere, fare battute. L’atmosfera che hai in squadra è così rilassante ”.

Tim: La cosa più importante è la squadra e coloro che ti circondano. Come ha detto Giacomo, se il pilota è felice e tutto va bene nella squadra, allora le cose sono più facili. A tutti noi piace quello che amiamo fare. Dico sempre “pilota felice, pilota veloce”. Tutti nel paddock saranno d’accordo con me. Non potrei essere più felice perché sono nella squadra migliore da sette anni. Sembra una seconda famiglia.

Come costruisci il tuo successo?
Tim: È sempre una motivazione essere i migliori ogni anno. Vogliamo sempre vincere di nuovo il titolo. E questo ci spinge avanti ogni anno ad avere una motivazione così alta.

Giacomo: Quando sei abituato a vincere, non ti piace finire terzo o quarto. Vogliamo continuare a vincere. Sappiamo che è molto difficile perché abbiamo una formazione di 40 piloti. Ma andiamo per vincere. E questa è la motivazione che abbiamo tutti.

Motul è un importante partner di squadra. Cosa significa per te e in che modo i lubrificanti Motul aiutano il tuo successo?
Giacomo: Sicuramente Motul è da molti anni uno dei nostri principali partner. Sappiamo che è un prodotto molto affidabile e abbiamo il miglior prodotto sul mercato. È sicuro per i motori e quando è sicuro per i motori, è sicuro per i piloti. Apprezziamo molto questa partnership di lunga durata.

Cosa fai adesso? Sei alla tua ultima gara della stagione(ormai era fatta dopo la pubblicazione n.d.r.). Quando inizi a prepararti e pensare al prossimo anno o fai una piccola pausa?
Giacomo: Immediatamente [ride]. Lunedì andiamo a provare e poi ci spostiamo su un’altra pista in Italia. Quindi, la nostra stagione inizia subito dopo l’ultimo GP.

Tim: Penso che sia il modo migliore. La stagione è stata così lunga. Siamo già a novembre ed è allora che comincio a prepararmi per la prossima stagione. Forse mi prenderò una o due settimane di pausa per provare a ricaricare le batterie, e poi ricominceremo. Non ci sarà molto tempo libero.

After picking up his fourth MXGP world championship, and with the last race of the season in Italy now behind him, we caught up with Team HRC rider Tim Gajser and team boss Giacomo Gariboldi about their year in racing. And how they’re preparing for their fifth, Motul-backed championship victory.

Tim, congrats on your fourth championship win! Does the feeling of winning the fourth feel as poignant as winning your first?
Tim: Thank you very much. It’s just an incredible feeling to win four world titles. And especially winning them back to back. It was not easy. Every championship you win is really difficult. There’s a lot of pressure. Because when you win one time, everyone expects you to win again. 

Giacomo, obviously it’s a great achievement for Tim, but what does it mean for you as a team manager?
Giacomo: I think it’s the same sort of feeling for the team manager. From my side, I was not on the bike, but I was on top of the team every day, and it’s the same feelings and sensations. It was great to get the first title. It was something unbelievable. But then when we won again, we realised we did something really great. To confirm is always more difficult than to win the first time. We are confirming year after year. Four titles in six seasons is not something I’ve seen so often in motorsport. I think it was a great, great achievement and we are very proud of it.

Obviously, this wasn’t an ideal year for motorsport. How tough have you found this year?
Giacomo: It was tough for everybody. I echo what I said in other interviews, this year we had to win races, but we also had to keep all the crew safe and healthy, so we had the double challenge all season. And we did it, which is great. For the riders to race three times in a week has been very tough. I said it at the time, but I think the rider who will win this time is the most complete rider ever, because they have to be mentally very strong, fast and fit to keep racing three times a week. I think we have the most complete athlete in this sport now.

Tim: It was a challenging year for everyone. We started the season really strong, then we had a long break because of Covid. We didn’t race for about five months. For every rider it felt like an off season. We didn’t know what to do because it was new to everyone, especially around training. We didn’t want to overtrain. It was really important to have a balance between training and recovery. It was a weird year and it wasn’t easy doing 11 races in two months. It was tough for everyone, but everything came together, and we won another title. 

Covid protocols have meant changes to the format of races. How have you coped with the changes?
Tim: At the beginning, I didn’t really like going back to a one-day schedule. I like to have two days to have a lot of track time, adjust the bike and have a qualification race before racing. Now everything was so quick and intense. It definitely wasn’t easy to adapt to that. We started to score consistently, and we were really working on that. The second season of the season was phenomenal, especially in Lommel. We knew I was fast, and we put a lot of hours into training and testing, but we had to take that attitude from the training to the racing. 

Giacomo: From the outside, it was good to see the one-day racing because everything was concentrated into a few hours and you don’t have to wait during the Saturday for no points. You enter the track in the morning, and after a few hours you have the results already.

Post-Covid, will things like this stay?
Giacomo: For next year, the calendar is already prepared for Covid and I think this will be the case for at least one more year. Still, we have to try and adapt next season to the situation in the world. It might not exactly be the same, but I think we’ll go very close to that.

Over the last five or six years, you’ve developed a winning formula. What’s your strategy for winning?

Giacomo: To keep the rider happy [laughs]. I heard someone saying some weeks ago “you know guys, I’m jealous when I enter your awning because I see everybody smiling, making jokes. The atmosphere you have in the team is so relaxing”.

Tim: The most important thing is the team and those around you. Like Giacomo said, if the rider is happy and everything is good in the team, then things are easier. We all enjoy what we love to do. I always say “happy rider, fast rider”. Everybody in the paddock will agree with me. I couldn’t be happier because I’ve been in the best team for seven years. It feels like a second family.

How do you build on your success?
Tim: It’s always a motivation to be the best every year. We always want to win the title again. And that moves us forward every year, to have such a high motivation.

Giacomo: When you are used to winning, you don’t like to finish third or fourth. We want to keep winning. We know that it’s very difficult because we have a line-up of 40 riders. But we go there to win. And that’s the motivation we all have.

Motul is an important team partner. What does this mean to you and how do Motul’s lubricants help your success?
Giacomo: For sure, Motul has been one of our main partners for many years. We know that it is a very reliable product and we have the best product on the market. It’s safe for the engines, and when it’s safe for the engines, it’s safe for the riders. We very much value this long-lasting partnership.

What do you do now? You’re at your last race of the season. When do you start preparing and thinking about next year, or do you take a bit of a break?
Giacomo: Immediately [laughs]. On Monday we go testing, and then we move to another track in Italy. So, our season starts straight away after the final GP.

Tim: I think that’s the best way. The season has been so long. We’re already in November, and that’s when I start preparing for the upcoming season. Maybe I’ll take one or two weeks off to try and recharge the batteries, and then we go again. There will not be a lot of time off.
