MXGP parla dell’apertura dell’Oman del 2021
MXGP tornerà in Medio Oriente per la prima volta dal 2016 se l’evento di apertura del calendario provvisorio FIM 2021 andrà avanti con l’inaugurazione del Gran Premio dell’Oman. La sede è uno dei quattro nuovi siti all’ordine del giorno per il prossimo anno; molto dipende da come si sviluppa la pandemia COVID-19. I promotori di Infront Motor Racing hanno già mescolato il programma un mese dopo la tradizionale data di inizio di marzo con il viaggio in Oman e l’attuale circuito di motocross con sede vicino all’aeroporto nella capitale Muscat in programma sabato 3 aprile.
“Questa discussione era in corso da alcuni mesi ed è una sensazione fantastica averla finalizzata”, ha commentato David Luongo, CEO di Infront Motor Racing. “Il Gran Premio è sostenuto dalle autorità sportive nazionali e da un promotore locale. Il GP sarà nella zona di Muscat e direttamente accessibile da tutte le sue strutture. L’Oman è un bellissimo paese con molta storia e splendidi paesaggi, quindi non vediamo l’ora di aprire la nuova stagione “.
Poco si sa sulla posizione del circuito GP, ma Muscat ha attualmente una pista da motocross adiacente all’aeroporto internazionale ea pochi chilometri a est del centro città. L’MXGP ha visitato l’ultima volta la regione dal 2013 al 2016 con il Gran Premio del Qatar al complesso automobilistico del circuito internazionale di Losail. L’Oman, che si trova a poche centinaia di chilometri a sud-ovest del Qatar, Dubai e Abu Dhabi, è montuoso nella regione settentrionale di Muscat. “L’Oman è uno dei paesi più proattivi per quanto riguarda gli sport motoristici in Medio Oriente con molti rally, tour in auto e in bicicletta nel deserto, mare e montagna”, aggiunge Luongo. “Stiamo portando MXGP in un nuovo paese di fan appassionati di sport motoristici.”
Losail ha utilizzato il vasto sistema di illuminazione per creare il primo Gran Premio della MXGP illuminato e per evitare alcune delle temperature diurne più rigide. Secondo Luongo, l’appuntamento in Oman si svolgerà alla luce del giorno. “Sarà un formato di due giorni con venerdì e sabato, e non avevamo intenzione di renderlo una gara notturna”.
Il Qatar si propone come la porta di accesso tra est e ovest (aiutato dall’enorme rete della pluripremiata compagnia Qatar Airways) ma gli eventi di sport motoristici a Losail hanno attirato folle limitate da quando ha attirato MotoGP, WorldSBK e MXGP nella struttura nel deserto. L’MXGP del Qatar si è svolto per il periodo del contratto tra QMMF e Infront Motor Racing (allora Youthstream) e la pista da motocross appositamente costruita è poi caduta in rovina. La MXGP è stata successivamente collegata a un evento in Kuwait (il progettista di piste del Gran Premio Greg Atkins ha recentemente costruito una pista con specifiche GP nel nuovo circuito di Motor City) e in Oman. Luongo insiste che la possibilità di tornare a Losail sia ancora viva in futuro. “Abbiamo ancora un ottimo rapporto con QMMF e Losail, quindi mai dire mai”, ha commentato.

MXGP talk about 2021 Oman opener
MXGP will head back to the Middle East for the first time since 2016 if the opening event of the 2021 FIM provisional calendar goes ahead with the inauguration of the Grand Prix of Oman. The venue is one of four new sites on the initial agenda for next year; much of which depends on how the COVID-19 pandemic develops. Promoters Infront Motor Racing have already shuffled the schedule a month later than the traditional early March start date with the trip to Oman and the current motocross circuit based close to the airport in the capital city of Muscat slated for Saturday April 3rd.
“This discussion was ongoing for some months and it is a fantastic feeling to have it finalized,” commented Infront Motor Racing’s CEO David Luongo. “The Grand Prix is supported by the sport national authorities and a local promotor. The GP will be in Muscat area and directly accessible from all its facilities. Oman is a beautiful country with a lot of history and beautiful landscapes, so we cannot wait to open the new season.”
Little is known about the location of the GP circuit but Muscat currently has a motocross track adjacent to the international airport and only a few kilometres east of the city centre. MXGP last visited the region from 2013 to 2016 with the Grand Prix of Qatar at the Losail International Circuit motorsport complex. Oman, which is a few hundred kilometres southwest of Qatar, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, is mountainous in the Muscat northern region. “Oman is one of the most proactive country regarding motorsports in the Middle East with a lot of rally, car and bike tour in the desert, seaside and mountains,” Luongo adds. “We are bringing MXGP to a new country of motorsport passionate fans.”
Losail made use of the vast lighting system to create MXGP’s first floodlit Grand Prix and to avoid some of the harsher daytime temperatures. According to Luongo, the Oman fixture will take place in the daylight. “It will be a two days format with Friday and Saturday, and we didn’t plan to make it a night race.”
Qatar markets itself as the gateway between east and west (helped by the massive network of the award-winning Qatar Airways company) but motorsports events at Losail have attracted limited crowds since it drew MotoGP, WorldSBK and MXGP to the desert-set facility. The MXGP of Qatar ran for the period of the contract between the QMMF and Infront Motor Racing (then Youthstream) and the purpose-built motocross track then fell into disrepair. MXGP was subsequently linked with an event in Kuwait (Grand Prix track designer Greg Atkins recently built a GP-spec track in the new Motor City circuit) and Oman. Luongo insists the possibility of returning to Losail is still alive in the future. “We still have a very good relationship with QMMF and Losail, so never say never,” he commented.
