Mewse spera di entrare nel “posto caldo” del Regno Unito dopo i progressi mentali nel 2020
Conrad Mewse è arrivato 8 ° nel Campionato mondiale di motocross FIM MX2 2020 e ha registrato otto risultati tra i primi cinque con la Hitachi KTM fuelled by Milwaukee. Il 21enne ritiene di aver fatto progressi mentali sufficienti per intensificare e riempire le scarpe di Ben Watson come pilota britannico leader nella categoria per il 2021.
Mewse è sulla scena internazionale da cinque stagioni e da quando si è laureato dalla vetta della classifica EMX250 all’inizio del 2016 per fare il suo debutto in MX2. Una serie di infortuni e problemi di fiducia hanno rallentato i suoi progressi ma le sue scorte sono aumentate ulteriormente nel 2020 grazie alla sua forma sulla 250 SX-F e al lavoro con l’allenatore ed ex pilota vincitore dei GP Stephen Sword.
Mewse è stato il sostituto britannico del fiorente Watson che ha ottenuto le prime vittorie del Regno Unito in MX2 dal 2016. Con la laurea del pilota Yamaha nella divisione MXGP per il 2021, Mewse è ora la principale speranza per il suo paese, anche se deve ancora eguagliare la velocità di gara con coerenza. “In generale, l’incongruenza era frustrante”, ha ammesso. “A Faenza sono andato 4-17 e 5-16! Stavo lottando per mettere insieme due moto. ” #426 doveva ancora superare un problema di forma fisica a metà della campagna 2020, ma chiaramente consapevole di come si era evoluto per diventare uno dei protagonisti della MX2 e una prospettiva di lode nel 2021. “È convinzione, fiducia e alcune cose diverse”, ha spiegato della ripresa e del passaggio da un torrido 2019 interrotto da un’operazione al polso. “Più corri davanti, maggiore sarà la tua sicurezza.”
Mewse ha la stabilità di un contratto rinnovato con la Hitachi KTM fuelled by Milwaukee per i prossimi due anni che lo porterà fino alla fine del suo stint nella classe MX2. Sa che dovrà litigare con artisti del calibro di Tom Vialle, Mathys Boisrame, Roan Van de Moosdijk, Isak Gifting, Jed Beaton e altri per il bottino.
“È difficile perché i ragazzini salgono e vanno dritti al fronte, e tu sei tipo ‘argh, ho lavorato anni per farlo'”, sorride. “Alcune persone impiegano più tempo di quanto non facciano altri. Ci è voluto del tempo per me e quando alla fine ci arriverò sarà più dolce. Credo che sarò in grado di mostrare il mio pieno potenziale nei prossimi due anni. “

Mewse hoping to step into UK ‘hotseat’ after mental progress in 2020
Conrad Mewse finished 8th in the 2020 MX2 FIM Motocross World Championship and registered eight top-five moto results with the Hitachi KTM fuelled by Milwaukee. The 21-year old believes he made sufficient progress mentally to step-up and fill Ben Watson’s shoes as the leading British rider in the category for 2021.
Mewse has been on the international scene for five seasons and since graduating from the top of the EMX250 standings early in 2016 to make his MX2 debut. A series of injury and confidence problems slowed his progress but his stock increased even further in 2020 thanks to his form on the 250 SX-F and work with rider coach and former GP winner Stephen Sword.
Mewse was the British understudy to the blossoming Watson who posted the UK’s first victories in MX2 since 2016. With the Yamaha man’s graduation to the MXGP division for 2021, Mewse is now the main hope for his country, although he still needs to match race speed with consistency. “Generally, the inconsistency was frustrating,” he admitted. “In Faenza I went 4-17 and 5-16! I was struggling to put two motos together.” #426 still had to overcome a fitness issue midway through the 2020 campaign but clearly conscious of how he had evolved to become one of the protagonists of MX2 and a prospect for honours in 2021. “It’s belief, confidence and a few different things,” he explained of the upturn and the move from a torrid 2019 dashed by a wrist operation. “The more you run at the front the more confidence you get.”
Mewse has the stability of a renewed contract with the Hitachi KTM fuelled by Milwaukee team for the next two years which will take him up to the end of his stint in the MX2 class. He knows he’ll have to tussle with the likes of Tim Vialle, Mathys Boisrame, Roan Van de Moosdijk, Isak Gifting, Jed Beaton and others for spoils.
“It’s difficult because the young kids come up and they go straight to the front, and you’re like ‘argh, I’ve been working years to do that’,” he smiles. “It takes some people longer than it does for others. It’s taken time for me, and when I do eventually get there it will be sweeter. I believe I’ll be able to show my full potential in these next two years.”
