Dopo una giornata frustrante sulla stessa pista di Pietramurata all’ombra delle Dolomiti italiane domenica, quando è stato investito da altri corridori, il francese ha confermato la sua determinazione a rimbalzare al successo con il secondo miglior tempo – meno di quattro centesimi dalla pole – nelle qualifiche durante la mattinata, ma le sue immediate speranze di vittoria sono state devastate in una partenza irregolare della gara di apertura che lo ha lasciato ultimo nelle prime due curve; imperterrito dalla battuta d’arresto ha bruciato il gruppo fino al quattordicesimo posto dopo un solo giro ed era già settimo, caldo sulla ruota posteriore del compagno di squadra Clement Desalle, dopo tre giri. I due verdi sono avanzati insieme in tandem fino alla classifica per prendere la bandiera a scacchi quarta e quinta. La seconda manche è stata contrassegnata con la bandiera rossa dopo un incidente che non ha coinvolto nessuno dei due piloti Kawasaki e Febvre ha risposto egregiamente alla ripartenza lasciando le prime curve al quarto posto, facendo un sorpasso per la terza posizione entro mezzo giro ed eseguendo un abile passaggio al secondo posto alla fine del secondo giro. In testa alla gara il neo-incoronato campione del mondo aveva già stabilito un vantaggio di diversi secondi ma il pilota Kawasaki, guidando in modo impeccabile e facendo registrare i giri più veloci della gara, ha chiuso più volte sulla ruota posteriore del campione ma non poteva del tutto fare il passaggio decisivo per la vittoria. Tale era il ritmo della coppia di testa che aveva distanziato il resto del campo di quasi mezzo minuto alla bandiera a scacchi. Terzo assoluto nella giornata Febvre ha ormai consolidato un ulteriore quarto posto nel mondiale che culminerà sulla stessa pista domenica.

Pieno di fiducia dopo il suo podio di domenica, Clement Desalle era quinto – a solo mezzo secondo dalla pole – nelle qualifiche. Decimo nelle imprevedibili curve di apertura della prima manche, è balzato con decisione al secondo giro per avanzare di tre posizioni e ha continuato la sua impressionante corsa verso la classifica per rivendicare il quarto posto al traguardo. Dopo aver visto frustrantemente la seconda manche con bandiera rossa dopo essere partito quarto, il belga è passato rapidamente dal sesto nella ripetizione per rivendicare di nuovo il quarto nel primo giro, ma tale era il ritmo dell’intera classifica che è rimasto in quella posizione fino al traguardo. Per rivendicare anche il quarto posto assoluto nella giornata. È ancora settimo in campionato ma potrebbe comunque conquistare il quinto posto nella classifica finale nell’ultimo round della serie di domenica.

Romain Febvre: “Sono stato in grado di recuperare abbastanza bene fisicamente da domenica, ma non completamente e questa sera ho ancora qualche dolore alla schiena! Non è stata una giornata facile ma ho fatto una buona prima manche; Ho avuto una brutta partenza perché la mia ruota posteriore è scivolata sulla piastra metallica ma ho avuto una buona velocità per risalire dall’ultimo al quinto posto. La mia seconda partenza è stata decisamente migliore; Ero terzo, sono passato al secondo e ho avuto una bella battaglia con Tim. Non riuscivo proprio a trovare il punto per sorpassarlo; è davvero difficile passare di qui. Ma io sono sul podio e va bene, anche se preferirei essere su un altro gradino. Ora ho tre giorni per riprendermi e poi provare a ottenere un altro podio “.

Clement Desalle: “Nel complesso è stata una buona giornata, a partire dalla quinta posizione nel turno di prove cronometrate. Al primo avvio ero settimo o ottavo; Ho superato due ragazzi e poi Cairoli è caduto e mi ha consegnato la quarta posizione. Ho beccato Lupino che era terzo; Ero più veloce di lui ma passare su questa pista è davvero difficile! La mia seconda partenza è stata buona, ma poi c’è stata la bandiera rossa. La mia partenza nella ripetizione non è stata altrettanto buona, ma sono riuscito a risalire al quarto posto con Cairoli che mi inseguiva; è stato vicino per diversi giri ma poi ero completamente concentrato per alcuni giri e ho potuto fare un distacco su di lui. Sono abbastanza contento della mia giornata con un abbonamento a # 4! “

After a frustrating day at the same Pietramurata track in the shadow of the Italian Dolomites on Sunday when he was run over by other riders the Frenchman confirmed his determination to bounce back to success with second-fastest time – less than four-hundredths of a second from pole – in Qualifying during the morning but his immediate hopes of victory were devastated in a ragged start to the opening race which left him dead-last through the opening two turns; undeterred by the setback he scorched through the pack to fourteenth after just one lap and was already seventh, hot on the rear wheel of teammate Clement Desalle, after three laps. The Green duo advanced together in tandem up the leaderboard to take the chequered flag fourth and fifth. The second moto had to be red-flagged after an incident which did not involve either Kawasaki rider and Febvre responded admirably at the re-start to leave the opening turns in fourth place, making a pass for third within half-a-lap and executing a clever move to second at the end of lap two. At the head of the race the newly-crowned world champion had already established a lead of several seconds but the Kawasaki rider, riding immaculately and setting the fastest laps of the race, closed time-and-again onto the rear wheel of the champion but could not quite make the decisive pass for victory. Such was the pace of the leading duo that they had out-distanced the rest of the field by nearly half-a-minute at the chequered flag. Third overall on the day Febvre has now consolidated yet further fourth place in the world championship which will culminate at the same track on Sunday.

Brimming with confidence after his podium finish on Sunday Clement Desalle was fifth – just half-a-second from pole – in Qualifying. Tenth through the unpredictable opening turns in the first moto he pounced decisively on the second lap to advance three places and continued his impressive ride up the leaderboard to claim fourth place at the finish. Having frustratingly seen the second moto red-flagged after starting fourth the Belgian moved forward quickly from sixth in the re-run to again claim fourth on the opening lap but such was the pace of the entire leaderboard that he remained in that position to the finish to also claim fourth overall on the day. He is still seventh in the championship but could still claim fifth in the final standings at the last round of the series on Sunday.

Romain Febvre: “I was able to recover pretty well physically since Sunday, but not completely and this evening I still have some pain in my back! It was not an easy day but I rode a good first moto; I had a bad start as my rear wheel slipped on the metal plate but I had good speed to come back from last to fifth. My second start was much better; I was third, passed to second and had a nice battle with Tim. I just couldn’t find the spot to pass him; it’s really difficult to pass here. But I am on the box and that’s good, even if I would prefer to be on another step. Now I have three days to recover again and then try to get another podium.”

Clement Desalle: “Overall it was a good day, starting with fifth position in the timed practice session. At the first start I was seventh or eighth; I passed two guys and then Cairoli crashed and handed me the fourth position. I caught Lupino who was third; I was faster than him but to pass on this track is really difficult! My second start was good, but then there was the red flag. My start in the re-run was not as good, but I could come back to fourth with Cairoli chasing behind me; he was close for several laps but then I was fully focused for a few laps and could make a gap on him. I’m pretty happy with my day with a subscription to #4!”
