COVID TAKES ITS TOLL ON PRADO 

“Ho la sensazione di aver lasciato degli affari in sospeso”, dice il galiziano.

La situazione era un po ‘scoraggiante. Jorge e la sua ragazza vivevano isolati al piano di sopra; sua madre, anche lei infetta, era rinchiusa in soggiorno; il padre e la sorella assistevano i “pazienti” con tutte le precauzioni, distribuendo cibo qua e là. Per fortuna nessuno di loro era veramente malato, ma la loro casa a Lommel è diventata una di quelle fonti di infezione e attenzione che prima vedevano solo nei notiziari.

Jorge sta bene: “Sono migliorato molto, ora posso respirare profondamente senza problemi, prima mi accorgevo che era difficile per me prendere aria senza tossire, ma ora sto bene e sto recuperando l’olfatto e i sapori”.

Tutto era iniziato al suo arrivo in Belgio, si è sentito male il primo fine settimana ed è andato a correre con quello che pensava fosse un semplice raffreddore. Mercoledì, per il secondo round sulla sabbia belga, il freddo non era scomparso e lui era di nuovo debole:

“Era difficile per me respirare e ho dovuto fare un grande sforzo perché il mio battito cardiaco era molto alto, davvero un brutto momento. ” Tuttavia, quella sofferenza lo ha portato in cima al podio.

-E poi è arrivato il tampone positivo …

– “Giovedì stavo recuperando e venerdì siamo andati ad allenarci per mettere a punto la moto. Ero contento perché avevamo fatto un buon lavoro e mi sentivo molto bene, le cose andavano bene per domenica … Ma improvvisamente la notizia di positivo, non ho capito niente, era qualcosa di surreale, una situazione fuori dal mio controllo. Stavamo parlando, è arrivata la chiamata e tutti si sono allontanati da me … Ti senti come un appestato “.

In quel momento e dopo essere entrato in quarantena, Prado è stato sottoposto a ulteriori esami, in cui è risultato nuovamente positivo. Di conseguenza, è andato da diversi medici per analizzare la sua situazione:

“Pensavo di poter correre ad Arco e mi aspettavo che la PCR fosse negativa, ma sia il pneumologo che il mio medico sportivo hanno detto che non era uno scherzo e che avrei dovuto dimenticare Un’infezione ai polmoni può lasciare gravi conseguenze e un atleta d’élite ha bisogno del cento per cento dei suoi polmoni, quindi non aveva senso correre il rischio perché ero ancora molto stanco, era difficile per me respirare e le mie difese erano basse. “

-Ora che hai vissuto con Covid nel tuo corpo e nella tua famiglia, che messaggio mandi alle persone?

– “Che lo prendano molto sul serio e sappiano che non è uno scherzo. Sono un atleta professionista e ho ridotto al minimo i rischi di contagio eppure sono stato contagiato senza sapere come. È una strana malattia, a casa ciascuno di noi ha avuto sintomi diversi, ma è chiaro che è facile diffondersi ed essere infettati e non si può scherzare con una malattia che può ucciderti “.

“Sento di aver perso un’opportunità”

Sotto l’aspetto psicologico la sconfitta è stata molto maggiore. In termini di prestazioni, Jorge è stato nel momento più dolce dell’anno. Aveva dominato in Spagna, era costantemente sul podio e si era completamente adattato alla classe MXGP:

“Ho la sensazione di aver lasciato qualcosa a metà. Ero in ottima forma, avevo impostato bene la moto e penso avrei potuto vincere più gare. Mi sento come se avessi perso un’opportunità, forse non per essere il primo, che sarebbe stato molto difficile, ma per assicurarmi il secondo posto e mettere sotto pressione Gajser “.

– Eri al tuo livello migliore?

– “Sì, penso che io e Gajser fossimo un gradino sopra. È stato un anno molto difficile, ma in continua progressione. Venuti da un infortunio abbiamo percorso un sentiero molto duro avanzando poco a poco verso gli obiettivi, prima la Top 10, poi la Top 5, poi il podio, la prima vittoria, la prima vittoria in gara, la prima assoluta GP … Sempre in progresso “.

-Sembra che ti sia successo tutto quest’anno …

– “Certo, fratture del femore e della clavicola, problemi meccanici, sanzioni ingiuste e ora Covid, è difficile immaginare qualcosa di peggio. Ecco perché sono entusiasta del nuovo anno, perché so che tante brutte cose non sono destinate a vengono di nuovo insieme. ”

-Anche così, è stato un anno fantastico, vero?

– “Certo, ho portato a casa quattro vittorie del Gran Premio. Anche se una non ha contato, per me è una vittoria perché so di aver vinto in pista. E ricorderò per sempre quelle due gare consecutive nel Gran Premio di Spagna, è stato senza dubbio il momento clou dell’anno. Correre nel tuo paese, per la prima volta in MXGP, e dominare è il massimo. Corri sempre sotto pressione per non deludere i tuoi tifosi di casa, ma se il risultato è buono, compensa tutto. Senza spettatori però non è la stessa cosa, quindi spero di ripetere l’esperienza nel 2021 con il locale pieno di tifosi “.

-Ti manca molto il tuo paese?

– “Sono davvero abituato a vivere un po ‘come un nomade sin da quando ero piccolo, ma ovviamente mi manca. Anche se ho sempre contatti con la famiglia e gli amici e ho sponsor come Torre de Núñez, che sono di Lugo, loro mi mandano prosciutto e mi fanno sentire sempre vicino alla mia terra “.

-Attendo con ansia l’inaugurazione del circuito Jorge Prado, giusto?

– “Sì e sono molto emozionato. È casa mia, è dove ho iniziato a guidare una moto ed è un modo per dare ai nuovi appassionati l’opportunità di praticare questo sport, che non è sempre facile”.

Quando il mondiale si concluderà domenica, la classifica negherà a Jorge Prado gran parte dei suoi meriti, ma i tifosi e il paddock in generale sanno benissimo che il nativo di Lugo ha avuto una grande stagione da rookie. Nonostante le molte battute d’arresto, ha raggiunto il livello più alto e ha suonato l’inno spagnolo quattro volte. Una di quelle cerimonie sul podio doveva essere ripetuta dopo che una penalità gli aveva fatto perdere posizioni. Una situazione che gli sembrava ingiusta e che ha aperto un certo dibattito sulla sicurezza:

“Ho già detto che per me è stata una vittoria netta e preferisco non entrare nelle polemiche. Quello che possiamo trarre da situazioni come queste è che noi dobbiamo fare della sicurezza la nostra priorità, in termini di bandiere, manutenzione dei tracciati e altre cose “.

-E in un anno così atipico, come ti sei adattato al format delle corse?

– “Beh, mi è piaciuto. Mi piace fare tre gare sulla stessa pista perché continui a migliorare e ad imparare ogni giorno ed è comodo per le squadre. Mi piace anche il formato compresso della domenica perché ti fa risparmiare fatica e rischi. Sabato, che comunque non ha contribuito positivamente. L’unica cosa che non mi piace è correre senza pubblico. Senza l’atmosfera e il supporto, ti manca la motivazione e diventi anche più nervoso. Inoltre, fa parte dell’essenza di questo sport.

-A proposito dei tuoi concorrenti, hai parlato solo di Gajser …

– “Sì, Gajser è stato molto forte in questo finale di stagione. Anche Herlings era molto forte all’inizio. Non ho davvero avuto la possibilità di affrontarlo faccia a faccia in condizioni ottimali, non so cosa sarebbe successo … Forse mi avrebbe battuto a Lommel, ma non a Madrid. Vedremo il prossimo anno “.

Sì, bisognerà aspettare fino al 2021, anno che Prado e il resto del mondo si aspettano sarà totalmente diverso da questo 2020. Una nuova stagione per la quale il galiziano inizierà presto a prepararsi. Prima qualche giorno di riposo e lavoro nella sua casa di Roma, poi qualche giorno in Spagna prima di iniziare la dura preparazione fisica prima di tornare in pista:

“Spero di fare un buon fuori stagione senza contrattempi, per raggiungere un buon Livello e mi metto in lizza per il titolo. So che ci vorrà molto lavoro e allenamenti molto duri, ma sono preparato. Certo, soprattutto spero che sarà un anno senza Covid “.

Parole pronunciate da chi è stato crudelmente vittima di bullismo a causa della pandemia, anche se solo per quanto riguarda la sua carriera sportiva.

COVID TAKES ITS TOLL ON PRADO

“I have the feeling of having left some unfinished business,” says the Galician.

The situation was a bit daunting. Jorge and his girlfriend lived isolated upstairs; his mother, also infected, was confined in the living room; the father and the sister attended to the “patients” with all the precautions, delivering food here and there. Luckily, none of them were really ill, but their home in Lommel has become one of those sources of infection and attention that they previously only saw on the news.

Jorge is well: “I have improved a lot, I can now breathe deeply without problems, before I did notice that it was difficult for me to take air without coughing, but now I am fine and I am recovering my smell and taste”. Everything had started on his arrival in Belgium, he felt bad the first weekend and went racing with what he thought was a simple cold. On Wednesday, for the second round in the Belgian sand, the cold had not disappeared and he was weak again: “It was difficult for me to breathe and I had to make a great effort because my heart rate was very high, I really had a very bad time.” Still, that suffering took him to the top of the podium.

-And then the positive came …

– “On Thursday I was recovering and on Friday we went to train to set up the bike. I was happy because we had done a good job and I was feeling very well, things were looking good for Sunday … But suddenly the news of the positive, I did not understand anything, it was something surreal, a situation beyond my control. We were talking, the call came and everyone moved away from me… You feel like a pest.”

In that moment and after going into quarantine, Prado underwent further tests, in which he tested positive again. Consequently, he went to several doctors to analyze his situation: “I thought I could race in Arco and I expected the PCR to be negative, but both the pneumologist and my sports doctor said that this was not a joke and that I should forget about racing. A lung infection can leave serious sequels and an elite athlete needs one hundred percent of his lungs, so there was no point in taking the risk because I was still very tired, it was difficult for me to breathe and my defenses were low.”

-Now that you have lived with Covid in your body and in your family, what message do you send to people?

– “That they take it very seriously and be aware that this is no joke. I am a professional athlete and I have minimized the risks of contagion and yet I have been infected without knowing how. It is a strange disease, at home each one of us has had different symptoms, but it is clear that it is easy to spread and be infected and you cannot joke around with a disease which can kill you.”

“I feel that I missed an opportunity”

In the psychological aspect the defeat was much greater. In terms of performance, Jorge was in the sweetest moment of the year. He had dominated in Spain, was consistently on the podium and had fully adapted to the MXGP class: “I totally have the feeling of having left something half done. I was in very good shape, I had set up the bike well and I think I could have won more races. I feel like I missed an opportunity, maybe not to be first, which was going to be very difficult, but to secure second place and put pressure on Gajser.”

– Were you at your best level?

– “Yes, I think Gajser and I were a step above. It has been a very difficult year, but in constant progression. Coming from injury we have walked a very hard path advancing little by little towards the objectives, first the Top 10, then the Top 5, then the podium, the first victory, the first race win, the first GP sweep… Always progressing.”

-It seems that everything happened to you this year …

– “Of course, femur and collarbone fractures, mechanical problems, unfair penalties and now Covid, it is hard to imagine anything worse. That is why I am excited about the new year, because I know that so many bad things are not likely to come together again.”

-Even so, it’s been a great year, right?

– “Of course, I brought home four grand prix victories. Although one did not count, for me it is a victory because I know I won on the track. And I will always remember that two-race sweep in the Spanish Grand Prix, it was undoubtedly the highlight of the year. Racing in your country, for the first time in MXGP, and dominating is the best. You always race with pressure not to disappoint your home fans, but if the result is good, it makes up for everything. Without the spectators it is not the same, though, so I hope to repeat the experience in 2021 with the venue full of fans.”

-Do you miss your country a lot?

– “I’m really used to living a bit like a nomad since I was little, but of course I miss it. Although I always have contact with family and friends and I have sponsors like Torre de Núñez, who are from Lugo, they send me ham and they always make me feel close to my land.”

-Looking forward to the Jorge Prado circuit inauguration, right?

– “Yes and I am very excited. It is my home, it is where I started riding a motorcycle and it is a way to give new fans an opportunity to practice this sport, which is not always easy.”

When the world championship ends on Sunday, the classification will deny Jorge Prado most of his merits, but the fans and the paddock in general know very well that the Lugo native has had a great rookie season. Despite the many setbacks, he has reached the highest level and has played the Spanish anthem four times. One of those podium ceremonies had to be repeated after a penalty made him lose positions. A situation that seemed unfair to him and that opened a certain debate on safety: “I have already said that for me it was a clear victory and I prefer not to get into the controversy. What we can take from situations like these is that we must make safety our priority, in terms of the flags as well as track maintenance and some other things.”

-And in such an atypical year, how have you adapted to the racing format?

– “Well, I liked it. I like having three races on the same venue because you keep improving and learning every day and it is comfortable for the teams. I also like the compressed format on Sunday because it saves the effort and risks taken on Saturday, which did not contribute positively anyways. The only thing I don’t like is racing without an audience. Without the atmosphere and the support, you lack motivation and you even get more nervous. Besides, it is part of the essence of this sport.

-About your competitors, you have only talked about Gajser…

– “Yes, Gajser has been very strong in this season finale. Herlings was also very strong at the beginning. I really haven’t had the chance to race him face to face in optimal conditions, I don’t know what would have happened… Maybe he would have beaten me in Lommel, but not in Madrid. We’ll see next year.”

Yes, it will have to wait until 2021, a year that Prado and the rest of the world expect to be totally different from this 2020. A new season for which the Galician will soon begin to prepare. First a few days of rest and work at his home in Rome, then a few days in Spain before starting the tough physical preparation prior to returning to the track: “I hope to have a good off-season without setbacks, to reach a good level and put myself in contention for the title. I know it will take a lot of work and training very hard, but I am prepared. Of course, above all I hope it will be a year without Covid.” Words spoken by someone who has been cruelly bullied by the pandemic, even if only in what concerns his sportive career.
