Gajser “not looking at championship” after tough Italian opener

Reigning MXGP World Champion Tim Gajser has yet to hit some of his imperious 2019 form as the Slovenian attempts to gel with the new Honda CRF450R. From six rounds the 24-year old has taken four moto victories and three podiums but has yet to join Jeffrey Herlings, Tony Cairoli and Glenn Coldenhoff and occupy the top step of the podium. Two moto DNFs, one from a crash and one with a technical problem, have cast #243 to 3rd in the standings and 67 points behind Herlings.

“We still have many races to go but the lead is already really big,” he lamented after the Italian Grand Prix and with 6th position overall. “I don’t look at the championship at the moment, my only goal is to win some GPs,” Gajser admitted.

The HRC man was restricted by poor starts at Monte Coralli last weekend; a weakness he, and the team, will have to fix to be in contention for the next two outings at Faenza this week.

“The pace is quite the same, the top five guys are inside half a second, so it is really difficult to gain time and to make a pass,” he said of the Italian hard-pack. “There are many lines but one is the fastest! The track doesn’t allow you to push that much because it is so hard underneath; I made two stupid mistakes. I was feeling good but I couldn’t move forward.”

Gajser will be seeking a reversal of results this week before a trip to Mantova for the next triple header where he has had a difficult ‘track record’. It was on the Italian sand where he broke his jaw and sustained a concussion for the worst injury of his career during 2018 pre-season and the muddy Lombardian GP of 2019 was the worst day of his title-winning campaign. Gajser is however the rider with the second highest amount of chequered flags this season and has led only seven laps less than Herlings.
