Yamaha deciderà la struttura MXGP 2021 questa settimana
La Yamaha ha solo due degli attuali cinque piloti ufficiali fissati per il 2021, ma questa settimana si riunirà in Italia per decidere il verdetto finale. Finora solo Jeremy Seewer e Jago Geerts sono stati fissati con i team Monster Energy Yamaha MXGP e MX2 (guidati rispettivamente da Wilvo e Kemea).
È opinione diffusa che la Yamaha tornerà a una struttura a due per MXGP, il che significa che Gautier Paulin o Arnaud Tonus saranno scelti per correre insieme al secondo classificato nel 2019 Seewer. Tuttavia, le impressionanti strutture dell’officina Wilvo a Bergeijk, in Olanda, possono facilmente ospitare uno sforzo di tre piloti e Yamaha Motor Europe insieme a Michele Rinaldi e alla sua divisione tecnica devono valutare se possono supportare tre piloti con materiale factory.
A quanto pare, una direzione verrà fissata dopo un incontro tra i dirigenti di YME al workshop di Rinaldi a Parma martedì.
Esisteva la speculazione che Glenn Coldenhoff potesse passare al “blu”, anche se il passaggio sembra improbabile considerando il forte legame dell’olandese con l’assetto della Standing Construct GasGas e il suo accordo con la Red Bull. Sia Paulin che Tonus devono ancora fare un podio o un risultato tra i primi tre. Paulin ha avuto a che fare con un dito rotto, subito il mese scorso in Lettonia, mentre Tonus ha saltato la maggior parte della stagione 2019 per infortunio e sta cercando di ristabilire le sue credenziali nella classe regina. Lo svizzero si è girato la caviglia a Faenza lo scorso fine settimana.
Nel frattempo nella MX2 SM il pilota Yamaha Maxime Renaux ha cronometrato alla perfezione la sua prima vittoria nel Gran Premio a Monte Coralli lo scorso fine settimana. Si dice che il ventenne francese tornerà all’unità Kemea accanto a Geerts per il 2021 mentre Ben Watson invecchia. La Yamaha deve ancora confermare il programma per i team satellite. SM ha aumentato le proprie possibilità grazie ai progressi di Renaux e alla spinta di Henry Jacobi nella sua stagione da debuttante MXGP e resta da vedere se Gebben Van Venrooy (con Alessandro Lupino, Calvin Vlaanderen e Thomas Covington) riassumerà l’etichetta di “satellite”.

Yamaha to decide on 2021 MXGP structure this week
Yamaha have only two of their current five rider factory line-up fixed for 2021 but are holding meetings this week in Italy to decide the final rooster. So far only Jeremy Seewer and Jago Geerts are fixed in place with the Monster Energy Yamaha MXGP and MX2 teams (helmed by Wilco and Kemea respectively).
It is widely assumed that Yamaha will revert to a two-man structure for MXGP, meaning either Gautier Paulin or Arnaud Tonus will be chosen to race alongside 2019 runner-up Seewer. However, the impressive Wilvo workshop facilities in Bergeijk, Holland can easily accommodate a three-rider effort and Yamaha Motor Europe together with Michele Rinaldi and his technical division need to evaluate whether they can support three racers with factory material.
Apparently, a direction will be fixed after a meeting among YME management at Rinaldi’s workshop in Parma on Tuesday.
Speculation has existed that Glenn Coldenhoff could transfer to ‘blue’ although the switch seems unlikely considering the Dutchman’s strong link with the Standing Construct GasGas set-up and his Red Bull deal. Both Paulin and Tonus have yet to post a podium finish or a top-three moto result. Paulin has been dealing with a broken finger, sustained last month in Latvia, while Tonus missed most of the 2019 campaign through injury and is trying to re-establish his credentials in the premier class. The Swiss tweaked his ankle in Faenza last weekend.
Meanwhile in MX2 SM Yamaha rider Maxime Renaux timed his maiden Grand Prix victory at Monte Coralli last weekend to perfection. The 20-year old Frenchman is rumoured to be heading back to the Kemea unit next to Geerts for 2021 as Ben Watson ages out. Yamaha still need to confirm their programme for satellite teams. SM have boosted their chances thanks to Renaux’s progress and Henry Jacobi’s push in his rookie MXGP season and it remains to be seen whether Gebben Van Venrooy (running Alessandro Lupino, Calvin Vlaanderen and Thomas Covington) will reassume the ‘satellite’ label.
