Olsen pronto per la sfida MXGP ma anche preoccupato per l’opportunità 2021
Thomas Kjer Olsen, secondo classificato nel Campionato mondiale MX2 2019, è pronto ad accettare la sfida della classe regina per il 2021, ma ammette che il tempismo su quello che dovrebbe essere uno dei contratti migliori e più avanzati della sua carriera finora è “preoccupante” .
Il 23enne Danese è settimo nella classifica MX2 dormiente dopo aver completato il Gran Premio di Gran Bretagna e Olanda sulla scia di un infortunio al polso pre-campionato. Il campione europeo EMX250 2016 è arrivato 3 °, 3 ° e 2 ° nelle sue tre stagioni MX2 – tutte con Husqvarna – e dovrà passare alla MXGP per il 2021, ma potrebbe scoprire che le sue opzioni sono limitate per una sella supportata in factory, soprattutto se i team desiderano offrire agli attuali piloti un’altra possibilità a causa della natura interrotta della campagna 2020.
“Certo, è sempre un po ‘preoccupante quando non hai nulla di firmato ma con il modo in cui sto guidando ora ho molta fiducia in me stesso e so di poter essere un buon pilota sulla 450 e nella classe MXGP”, lui dice. “Il mondo si è praticamente fermato in questo momento, ed è difficile per le squadre stipulare un buon contratto”.
Per Olsen continuare con Husqvarna, l’ascesa nella squadra Rockstar Energy IceOne sarebbe la direzione naturale. Ciò significherebbe spostare uno dei compagni di 23 anni Pauls Jonass o Arminas Jasikonis che avranno avuto rispettivamente due e cinque stagioni nella classe. Il produttore potrebbe anche inserire il “rookie” in una troupe satellitare con Maddii Racing; che ha guadagnato la fiducia per aver curato due delle prospettive più brillanti d’Italia Mattia Guadagnini e Alberto Forato.
Il potere di contrattazione di Olsen sarebbe aumentato se potesse consegnare il primo campionato mondiale del marchio in questo secolo e, nonostante il modesto inizio al 2020, rimane uno dei favoriti per la corona MX2 grazie alla sua comprovata velocità e costanza. Crede che l’effetto erosivo del COVID-19 sulla lista del campionato non ridurrà alcun risultato quando la “stagione” verrà finalmente decretata.
“Sarebbe altrettanto dolce”, ha commentato quando gli è stato chiesto di rimuginare su come sarebbe stato un titolo del 2020. “È quello per cui ho lavorato, e tuttora, sto lavorando così duramente. Per essere campione del mondo devi passare attraverso “qualunque cosa”. Almeno questo tempo “libero” ora significa poter lavorare sui piccoli dettagli, cose che a volte non hai sempre tempo durante la stagione. Sto cercando di essere positivo sulla situazione. Tengo molto alle mie corse. ”

Olsen ready for MXGP challenge but also worried for 2021 opportunity
2019 MX2 World Championship runner-up Thomas Kjer Olsen says he is ready to embrace the challenge of the premier class for 2021 but admits that the timing over what should be one of the best and most advanced contracts of his career so far is “worrying”.
The 23-year old Dane is 7th in the dormant MX2 standings after completing the British and Dutch Grands Prix in the wake of a pre-season wrist injury. The 2016 EMX250 European Champion has finished 3rd, 3rd and 2nd in his three MX2 seasons – all with Husqvarna – and will have to move into MXGP for 2021 but could find his options are limited for a factory-backed saddle, especially if teams wish to give current riders another chance due to the interrupted nature of the 2020 campaign.
“For sure, it is always a bit worrying when you have nothing signed but with the way I am riding now I have a lot of confidence in myself and I know I can be a good rider on the 450 and in the MXGP class,” he says. “The world has pretty much stopped right now, and it is difficult for teams to make a good contract.”
For Olsen to continue with Husqvarna then elevation into the Rockstar Energy IceOne squad would be the natural direction. This would mean displacing one of fellow 23-year olds Pauls Jonass or Arminas Jasikonis who will have had two and five seasons in the class respectively. The manufacturer could also slot the ‘rookie’ into a satellite crew such as Maddii Racing; who have gained credence for grooming two of Italy’s brightest prospects Mattia Guadagnini and Alberto Forato.
Olsen’s bargaining power would be heightened if he can deliver the brand’s first world championship this century, and despite the modest start to 2020 he remains one of the favourites for the MX2 crown thanks to his proven speed and consistency. He believes the erosive effect of COVID-19 on the championship slate will not cheapen any achievement when the ‘season’ is finally decreed as over.
“It would be just as sweet,” he commented when asked to ruminate on what a 2020 title would feel like. “It is what I have been – and still am – working so hard for. To be world champion you have to go through ‘whatever’. At least this ‘free’ time now means being able to work on the small details, things that you sometimes don’t always have time during the season. I’m trying to be positive about the situation. I care a lot about my racing.”
