MXGP sta considerando il formato di gara di una giornata per il 2020 e il Motocross delle Nazioni contando i punti del campionato mondiale FIM
La MXGP 2020 è tornato ad una data ad inizio agosto con lo spostamento del Grand Prix di Russia della scorsa settimana, ma i promotori Infront Motor Racing stanno prendendo in considerazione altre misure per garantire il miglior stato possibile dell’attuale Campionato Mondiale FIM che finora ha registrato due dei previsti venti appuntamenti. Gli organizzatori mirano a discutere gli schemi con la FIM e apparentemente hanno già informato gli OAT.
Il primo è quello di eseguire l’azione MXGP la domenica con il campionato europeo EMX e il campionato mondiale femminile WMX FIM che si terranno il sabato. MXGP avrebbe negoziato una pratica a tempo libero e rimosso le gare di qualificazione (se occasionalmente divertente). Il calendario è stato concepito come uno strumento di riduzione dei costi solo per il 2020 e non si applicherebbe alle gare estere, con viaggi in Cina, Indonesia e Argentina ancora in elenco.
“Dato che dovremo gareggiare back to back – e in questo anno molto speciale, vogliamo ridurre i costi e aiutare i team ad affrontare questa situazione – concentreremo sabato la classe europea e la WMX e manterremo la domenica solo per MX2 e MXGP “, Ha commentato David Luongo, CEO di Infront Motor Racing. “Questo cambiamento sarà valido solo per la stagione 2020 e il 2021 tornerà alla normalità”.
Forse una proposta più radicale è consentire al 74° Motocross delle Nazioni (che si svolgerà sul circuito di Ernee in Francia il 27 settembre e nel bel mezzo dell’agenda rielaborata dei GP) di portare punti del campionato mondiale. I migliori piloti nelle classifiche MXGP e MX2 che non sono selezionati dai loro paesi (o le loro Federazioni non entrano in una squadra) potrebbero competere a Ernee come jolly. Il ragionamento alla base dell’idea dà ancora più credibilità al MXoN come evento di gara e potenzialmente estende l’ambito delle classi MXGP e MX2 con Infront che ancora spera nel maggior numero possibile di Gran Premi.
“Per quanto riguarda l’MXoN, abbiamo alcune idee per i caratteri jolly ma siamo ancora in procinto di stabilire il sistema e discuteremo prima di tutto di quegli aspetti con FIM”, ha detto David Luongo. “Ma posso assicurarti che saranno presenti i migliori piloti.”
L’IMR ha versato acqua fresca sulla possibilità di eventi a porte chiuse (a causa del fatto che il biglietto degli spettatori è un elemento finanziario chiave di un Grand Prix) e gare consecutive nella stessa sede. Sperano di avere una solida direzione del programma 2020 a giugno, quando si prevede che molti altri sport internazionali riprenderanno e che saranno stati completati campionati come la serie AMA Supercross 2020.

MXGP considering single day race format for 2020 and Motocross of Nations counting FIM World Championship points
2020 MXGP shuffled back to an August start date with the displacement of the Grand Prix of Russia last week but promoters Infront Motor Racing are contemplating other measures to ensure the best possible state of the current FIM World Championship that has so far logged two of the scheduled twenty dates. The organisers are aiming to discuss the schemes with the FIM and have apparently informed the OATs already.
The first is to run MXGP action on Sundays with EMX European Championship and WMX FIM Women’s World Championship taking place on Saturdays. MXGP would negotiate a Free/Timed Practice and removed the polemic (if occasionally entertaining) Qualification Heat. The timetable has been envisaged as a cost-cutting tool solely for 2020 and would not apply to the flyaways, with trips to China, Indonesia and Argentina still on the list.
“As we will have back to back racing – and in this very special year, we want to reduce the cost and help the teams to face this situation – we will concentrate the European Class and WMX on Saturday and keep Sunday only for MX2 and MXGP,” commented Infront Motor Racing’s CEO David Luongo exclusively. “This change will be valid only for 2020 season and 2021 will come back to normal.”
Perhaps a more radical proposal is allow the 74th Motocross of Nations (set to take place at the Ernee circuit in France on September 27th and in the midst of the reworked agenda of GPs) to carry world championship points. The top-ranked riders in the MXGP and MX2 standings that are not selected by their countries (or their Federations do not enter a team) could compete at Ernee as wild-cards. The reasoning behind the idea gives even more credence to the MXoN as a race event and potentially extends the scope of the MXGP and MX2 classes with Infront still hopeful of as many Grands Prix as possible. “Regarding the MXoN, we have some ideas for the wild cards but we are still in a process to establish the system and we will discuss about all those aspects with FIM first,” David Luongo said. “But I can assure you that the best riders will be present.”
IMR have poured cool water on the possibility of behind-closed-door fixtures (due to spectator-ticketing being a key financial element of a Grand Prix) and back-to-back races at the same venue. They hope to have a solid direction of the 2020 schedule in June, when many other international sports are expected to resume and championships like the 2020 AMA Supercross series will have been completed.
