Alla Red Bull KTM mancavano i rappresentanti MXGP – Jeffrey Herlings e Tony Cairoli – per il secondo incontro consecutivo. Herlings si sta riprendendo rapidamente da una frattura del piede destro mentre Cairoli si è sottoposto inaspettatamente a un’operazione correttiva in Belgio sabato.
L’italiano decise ulteriori scansioni dopo che il gonfiore si era placato sulla sua spalla destra. Inizialmente aveva sperato di continuare a gareggiare nel 2019, ma i danni ai muscoli sottoscapolare e sovraspinato hanno significato che gli è stato consigliato di sottoporsi immediatamente a un intervento chirurgico. La procedura è stata eseguita da Tom Claes (figlio del famoso chirurgo Toon) e l’ex-nove volte campione del mondo dovrebbe lasciare l’ospedale oggi (domenica) per iniziare un periodo di recupero che può durare tra i tre e i quattro mesi.
Tony Cairoli: “È triste finire il campionato in questo modo e non è successo troppe volte nella mia carriera. Quando ho provato a guidare la scorsa settimana sapevo di avere qualche problema ma volevo rimanere positivo riguardo alla ripresa. Ho avuto più scansioni in Belgio e l’infortunio è stato molto peggiore di come pensavamo così mi hanno detto di fare un intervento subito ed è stata la soluzione migliore per tornare in salute nel modo più veloce. Grazie al team e ai fan per il supporto. Spero di fare alcune gare prima della fine della stagione e ora mi concentrerò per migliorare “.

Red Bull KTM were missing their MXGP representatives – Jeffrey Herlings and Tony Cairoli – for the second meeting in a row. Herlings is recovering quickly from a broken lower right leg while Cairoli unexpectedly underwent a corrective operation in Belgium on Saturday.
The Italian decided on further scans after the swelling had subsided on his right shoulder. He had initially hoped to continue racing in 2019 but damage to the Subscapularis and Supraspinatus muscles meant he was advised to have surgery right away. The procedure was performed by Tom Claes (son of renowned surgeon Toon) and the former nine-times world champion is expected to leave hospital today (Sunday) to begin a recovery period that can take between three-four months.
Tony Cairoli: “It is sad to finish the championship this way and it hasn’t happened too many times in my career. When I tried to ride last week I knew I had some problems but I wanted to stay positive about the recovery. I had more scans in Belgium and the injury was much worse that we thought so they told me to have surgery right away and it was the best solution to get healthy again in the fastest way. Thanks to the team and to the fans for the support. I hope to visit a few races before the end of the season and will now concentrate on getting better.”
