PRADO PERFECT IN LATVIA TO EXTEND MX2 CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD
A dieci anni dall’inaugurazione del Campionato Mondiale FIM del circuito pianeggiante, veloce e sabbioso di Kegums, l’MXGP è stato nuovamente presente in Lettonia per il nono round della stagione 2019 e a metà percorso della campagna. Il Gran Premio della Lettonia ha riportato il paddock dopo il lungo viaggio in Russia e nel mezzo di altre tre serie consecutive di gare. La Red Bull KTM è arrivata a Kegums – 50 km a sud di Riga – con Jorge Prado ancora imbattuto nella classe MX2 e con la targa rossa in testa alla classifica.
MXGP
Nel circuito della sua prima vittoria in Grand Prix con la KTM 450 SX-F nel 2017, Jeffrey Herlings ha raccolto il suo primo trionfo di qualificazione di sabato per quella che è stata solo la sua seconda apparizione della stagione. Uno strano incidente sul giro di allineamento della prima manche di domenica si sarebbe rivelato costoso. Herlings fu colpito da un altro pilota: la sua fragile gamba destra subì il colpo dell’impatto. In totale disagio ha prodotto una prestazione fantastica per battere Arnaud Tonus e vincere la gara, ma una scansione in seguito ha rivelato una frattura del capitello della tibia e l’olandese ha lasciato il circuito per cure mediche.
Tony Cairoli non era al 100% a causa degli effetti di un virus e di una spalla destra indebolita a causa del suo incidente nel Gran Premio della Russia del weekend precedente. Il nove volte campione del mondo ha portato a un brillante 3° posto nella gara di apertura, dando a Red Bull KTM due moto nelle prime tre posizioni. L’italiano è stato sfortunato a cadere nella seconda gara e ha subito un infortunio, alla spalla destra lussata, ponendo fine alla sua partecipazione.
Cairoli sta dando la caccia a Tim Gajser in cima alla classifica ed è a 33 punti dallo sloveno.
Tony Cairoli: “Sabato ho avuto l’influenza e la febbre, e il mio braccio non era forte come volevo dopo l’incidente in Russia. Ho potuto lottare con i ragazzi per la prima posizione nella prima manche ma poi mi sono un po ‘stancato e ho optato per il terzo posto, il che è stato positivo per il campionato. Nella seconda manche ero quarto e cercavo di seguire [Arnaud] Tonus. Ho avuto un brutto incidente e quando mi sono alzato ho sentito la spalla mancare. La mia speranza è di essere pronto per iniziare almeno la prossima settimana in Germania. Non voglio affatto mollare e voglio esserci il più possibile per il campionato “.
Davide De Carli, Assistente del team manager: “Tony ha sofferto all’inizio del weekend a causa dello schianto in Russia. Ha avuto un problema con il nervo nella parte inferiore della spalla, che ha influenzato la sensazione nella sua mano destra. Ha iniziato alla grande nella prima manche e ha dovuto rallentare un po ‘con un po’ di dolore, ma il terzo è stato un risultato davvero buono che non ci aspettavamo. Nella seconda manche stava guadagnando alcune posizioni ma mancava la forza nel suo braccio e l’incidente gli ha fatto saltare la spalla. Non ci sono danni all’osso o al legamento, quindi vedremo se può provare a guidare in Germania. Faremo dei controlli questa settimana. Tutto sta andando davvero bene per Jorge e penso che abbia avuto il miglior slancio della sua carriera fino ad ora. Questo fine settimana è stato il miglior livello di coerenza che ho visto da lui. È ad un livello veramente alto. ”
Dirk Gruebel, Team Manager e Coordinatore tecnico della MX2: “I ragazzi della MX2 hanno fatto un grande successo oggi, ma l’MXGP è partita molto stranamente con l’incidente di Jeffrey sul Sighting Lap. Abbiamo dovuto raddrizzare la moto e poi ha guidato alla grande e ha vinto la gara: anche questo è stato eccezionale. In seguito abbiamo scoperto che aveva un’altra piccola frattura alla caviglia e che non era adatto a continuare, quindi abbiamo dovuto fermarlo. Tony è andato giù pesantemente nella seconda gara e si è slogato la spalla così è stato un finale difficile per la giornata “.
MX2
Da otto turni di MX2 prima della Lettonia, Jorge Prado ha preso sette vittorie (tutte e sette disputate nel 2019). Quella serie continuò a Kegums quando il diciottenne spagnolo partì dal primo posto e dopo la sua quinta vittoria per le qualifiche di sabato. Prado ha segnato il ritmo in ogni sessione ed è stato un chiaro vincitore dopo aver stabilito la sua feroce velocità dalle fasi iniziali delle manche. Il suo 1-1 rappresentava il suo settimo “doppio” dell’anno. Prado ha consolidato la sua presa sulla tabella rossa MX2 e ora ha un vantaggio di 30 punti su Thomas Kjer Olsen.
Tom Vialle ha corso per la prima volta a Kegums e la sua abilità di partenza ha aiutato il giovane francese a ottenere risultati di 7-9. Vialle ha dovuto negoziare il terreno accidentato e la sua abilità nel rendere la top ten ha permesso al debuttante di fare ancora più esperienza. È 6° in campionato e solo 4 punti dai primi cinque.
Jorge Prado: “Questo weekend è stato un po ‘giù per la squadra. Ci sono stati alcuni “aumenti” come la mia vittoria e il buon giro di Tom, ma poi Jeffrey e Tony infortunati sono sconvolto. Vorrei un recupero veloce per entrambi. Da parte mia è stato un fine settimana perfetto. Ho guidato ogni singola sessione, quindi molto bene. Il prossimo Teutschenthal e l’anno scorso ho vinto lì. Grandi solchi! Spero che possiamo allenarci bene questa settimana e concentrarci sull’obiettivo “.
Tom Vialle: “È stato un fine settimana speciale e una serie di condizioni: è stato complicato lavorare per la mia prima visita su questo tracciato ma sono contento del risultato. La mia velocità era buona e due solidi risultati e più esperienza per me. So che ho bisogno di più allenamento e pratica nella sabbia e di essere migliore su tutti i tipi di terreno il prossimo anno. Teutschenthal sarà un altro nuovo posto per me, ma l’hard-pack sarà buono. ”
Il Gran Premio di Germania si svolgerà la settimana prossima alla fine della stagione 2019 attraverso il veloce e stretto hard-pack di Talkessel a Teutschenthal.

Ten years on from the FIM World Championship inauguration of the flat, fast and sandy Kegums circuit, MXGP was again present at the Latvian venue for the ninth round of the 2019 season and the halfway point of the campaign. The Grand Prix of Latvia brought the paddock back together after the long trip to Russia and in the midst of another three in a row sequence of races. Red Bull KTM arrived at Kegums – 50km south of Riga – with Jorge Prado still undefeated in the MX2 class and holding the red plate as series leader.
MXGP
At the site of his first Grand Prix victory with the KTM 450 SX-F in 2017, Jeffrey Herlings picked up his first Qualification Heat triumph on Saturday for what was just his second appearance of the season. A strange crash on the Sighting Lap of the first moto on Sunday would prove to be costly. Herlings was hit by another rider: his fragile right lower leg taking the brunt of the impact. In some discomfort he produced a fantastic performance to beat Arnaud Tonus and win the race but a scan afterwards revealed a hairline fracture of the lower tibia and the Dutchman left the circuit for medical attention.
Tony Cairoli was less than 100% due to the effects of a virus and a weakened right shoulder as a consequence of his crash in the Grand Prix of Russia the previous weekend. The nine-times world champion rode to a brilliant 3rd position in the opening moto, giving Red Bull KTM two motorcycles in the top three. The Italian was unlucky to fall in the second race and sustained a dislocated right shoulder, ending his participation.
Cairoli is chasing Tim Gajser at the top of the table and is 33 points behind the Slovenian.
Tony Cairoli: “On Saturday I had the Flu and a fever, and my arm was not as strong as I wanted after the crash in Russia. I could battle with the guys for first position in the first moto but then I got a bit tired and settled for third, which was good for the championship. In the second moto I was fourth and trying to follow [Arnaud] Tonus. I had quite a big crash and when I stood up I felt my shoulder was out. My hope is to be ready to at least start next week in Germany. I don’t want to give up at all and I want to be there as much as possible for the championship.”
Davide De Carli, Assistant Team Manager: “Tony was struggling at the beginning of the weekend because of the crash in Russia. He had a problem with the nerve in the bottom of the shoulder, which affected the feeling in his right hand. He started great in the first moto and had to slow down a little bit with some pain but third was a really good result that we didn’t expect. In the second race he was gaining some positions but missed power in his arm and the crash caused his shoulder to pop put. There is no damage to the bone or the ligament so we will see if he can try to ride in Germany. We will make some checks this week. Everything is going really well for Jorge and I think he has the best momentum of his career so far. This weekend was the best level of consistency I have seen from him. He is at a really high level.”
Dirk Gruebel, MX2 Team Manager and Technical Co-ordinator: “The MX2 boys did outstanding today but MXGP started very weirdly with Jeffrey’s crash on the Sighting Lap. We had to straighten the bike and he then rode great and won the race: this was also outstanding. Afterwards we found out he had another small fracture in his leg and he was unfit to continue, so we had to call it a day. Tony went down hard in the second race and dislocated his shoulder so it was a hard ending to the day.”
MX2
From eight rounds of MX2 prior to Latvia, Jorge Prado has claimed seven wins (all seven he has contested in 2019). That streak continued in Kegums as the eighteen year old Spaniard started from first place and after his fifth Qualification Heat victory on Saturday. Prado set the pace in every session and was a clear winner after establishing his fierce speed from the opening phases of the motos. His 1-1 represented his seventh ‘double’ of the year. Prado consolidated his grip on the MX2 red plate and now enjoys a 30 point lead over Thomas Kjer Olsen.
Tom Vialle was racing at Kegums for the very first time and his starting prowess helped the young Frenchman to results of 7-9. Vialle had to negotiate the rough and bumpy terrain and his ability to make the top ten allowed the rookie to bank yet more valuable experience. He is 6th in the championship and just 4 points from the top five.
Jorge Prado: “This weekend was a bit down for the team. There were some ‘ups’ like my victory and the good ride by Tom but then Jeffrey and Tony getting injured is upsetting. I wish a speed recovery for both of them. From my side it was a perfect weekend. I headed every single session, so really good. Teutschenthal next and I won there last year. Big ruts! Hopefully we can train well this week and keep focussed on the goal.”
Tom Vialle: “It was a special weekend and set of conditions: it was complicated to work out the track for my first visit but I’m happy with the result. My speed was good and two solid finishes and more experience for me. I know I need more training and practice in the sand and to be better on all types of terrain next year. Teutschenthal will be another new place for me but the hard-pack will be good.”
The Grand Prix of Germany will take place through the fast and narrow hard-pack of Talkessel in Teutschenthal next week as MXGP enters the second half of the 2019 season.
