MXGP trova la sua strada con la nuova Goggle Lane
L’ultimo Gran Premio della Lombardia a Mantova ha fornito a MXGP le sue prime condizioni meteo umide in questa stagione e ha visto diversi piloti testare i benefici della nuova creazione della Goggle Lane che viene ora installata in tutti i circuiti; di solito appena prima o dopo la struttura pitlane.
Anche se non sono ancora obbligatorie, la FIM ha “incoraggiato” i corridori ad entrare nella corsia e scambiare gli occhiali sporchi con il fango in una finestra di due passaggi. La premessa della “Lane” è quella di fornire un’alternativa più veloce e più sicura che entrare in pitlane e la sentenza dei due giri – che potrebbe entrare in vigore per il 2020 – è prevenire infortuni e situazioni come quella vista al Motocross delle Nazioni 2018 dove un problema agli occhi per Calvin Vlaanderen che quasi certamente è costata la vittoria della squadra olandese al RedBud negli Stati Uniti.
Nell’incontro con la pioggia a Mantova nella MX2, il contendente al campionato del mondo Thomas Kjer Olsen è stato uno dei piloti più importanti a utilizzare la struttura per occhiali nuovi dopo essere stato coinvolto in un incidente alla prima curva nella prima manche. Il pilota Rockstar Energy Husqvarna è stato in grado di tornare in sesta posizione e alla fine ha salvato un podio complessivo.
“L’ho usata nella prima manche ma non ero sicuro che il meccanico potesse tenere la mia frizione o no – ho scoperto per la seconda manche che era possibile – quindi mi sono incasinato!” Dice Olsen della procedura che afferma che il personale di squadra deve attendere fuori dall’area della corsia recintata. “Stavo cercando di trovare la folle e in realtà l’ho spenta. Quando sono andato per ripartire, ho impiegato un po ‘di tempo e sono rimasto un po’ spaventato per un momento. L’idea è ottima e se i meccanici sono in grado di aiutarci ha sicuramente un senso. ”

MXGP finding its way with the new Goggle Lane
The recent Grand Prix of Lombardia at Mantova provided MXGP with its first wet weather conditions this season and saw several riders testing the benefits of the new Goggle Lane provision that is now being installed in all circuits; usually just before or after the pitlane structure.
While not yet mandatory, the FIM have ‘encouraged’ riders to enter the lane and swap mud-splattered eyewear within a two-lap window. The premise of the Lane being to provide a quicker and safer alternative than entering pitlane and the two-lap ruling – which could come into effect for 2020 – is to prevent injury and situations like that seen at the 2018 Motocross of Nations where an eye problem for Calvin Vlaanderen almost certainly cost the Dutch team victory at RedBud in the USA.
In the rain-hit meeting at Mantova MX2 world championship contender Thomas Kjer Olsen was one of the most prominent riders to use the facility for fresh goggles after he was involved in a first-corner pile-up in the opening moto. The Rockstar Energy Husqvarna rider was able to come back to 6th position and eventually rescued an overall podium finish.
“I used it in the first moto but I wasn’t sure if the mechanic was allowed to hold my clutch or not – I found out for the second moto that he was – so I kinda messed up!” says Olsen of the procedure that states team staff must wait outside of the fenced lane area. “I was trying to find neutral and I actually stalled it. When I went to fire the bike it took a little while and I was a bit scared for a moment. The idea is great and if the mechanics are able to help it definitely makes sense.”
