L’MXGP australiano non è sigillato
La notizia che MXGP si sarebbe recata nella città di Perth per il primo Gran Premio d’Australia dal 2001 è emersa in modo sorprendente nel round britannico della serie dello scorso fine settimana. Il promettente promotore Willie Thomson, da Dirt High Promotions, ha rilasciato una breve intervista al commentatore del circuito di Matterley Basin, Roger Warren, e ha osservato che un accordo triennale era in vigore dal 2020.
Mentre l’Australia è un territorio che i detentori dei diritti e i promotori della MXGP Youthstream hanno preso di mira per più di un decennio, quest’ultimo sviluppo è ancora molto “al tavolo”.
“Non posso dare alcuna informazione”, ha commentato il vicepresidente della Gioventù David Luongo. “Siamo in trattative ma non è stato fatto nulla. Speriamo di tornare là [Australia]. È stata una lunga chiacchierata e sembra seria ma non abbiamo ancora finalizzato nulla “.
Si è parlato del Grand Prix da svolgere all’interno dei confini di uno stadio di corse di cavalli nella città di Perth e come secondo round del campionato dopo che l’Argentina aveva confermato altri due anni come parte del calendario MXGP in occasione dell’evento a Neuquen il mese scorso. Un’altra opzione è il circuito di Manjimup; situato a circa 250 km a sud della città ed è un ex sede del Motocross delle Nazioni.
In merito ai futuri sviluppi del calendario MXGP, Luongo ha osservato che un ritorno in Medio Oriente sembra probabile. Losail, Qatar ha aperto la lista dei Grand Prix per cinque anni a partire dal 2013 e il nuovo complesso del Kuwait Motor City ha ingaggiato l’ex costruttore delle piste MXGP Greg Atkins per progettare e costruirne una sulle specifiche GP e potrebbe essere in corsa per ospitare un evento. Luongo ha anche affermato che il recente accordo di acquisizione di Youthstream con la società svizzera Infront contribuirà a una diffusione ancora più globale di MXGP. (Ancora non si è visto nulla di nuovo però….. n.d.r.)
“Il Medio Oriente è ancora in trattativa”, ha commentato. “Siamo all’inizio dell’anno, ma ho già la sensazione che avremo qualcosa per il 2020. Abbiamo richieste dal Sud America e dal Medio Oriente che sono positive per la tendenza del campionato”.
“Riteniamo che la spinta di Infront porterà alcune richieste, ma abbiamo appena iniziato la collaborazione”, aggiunge. “Ancora non è stato completato nulla, ma ci sono molti discorsi con luoghi al di fuori dell’Europa e dimostra che MXGP è molto popolare e interessante per le persone.”
MXGP visita attualmente Argentina, Indonesia (due volte), Russia, Cina e Hong Kong come “flyaway”.

Australian MXGP deal far from sealed
News that MXGP would be heading to the city of Perth for the first Australian Grand Prix since 2001 emerged in surprising fashion at last weekend’s British round of the series. Keen promoter Willie Thomson, from Dirt High Promotions, gave a short interview to Matterley Basin circuit commentator Roger Warren and remarked that a three-year agreement was in place starting 2020.
While Australasia is a territory that MXGP rights-holders and promoters Youthstream have been targeting for more than a decade this latest development is still very much ‘on the drawing board’. “I cannot give any information,” commented Youthstream VP David Luongo. “We are in negotiations but nothing has been done. We hope to go back there [Australia]. It has been a long talk and it looks serious but we don’t have anything finalised yet.”
There was talk of the Grand Prix being staged within the confines of a horse racing stadium in the city of Perth and as the second round of the championship after Argentina had confirmed another two years as part of the MXGP calendar at the running of the event at Neuquen last month. Another option is the Manjimup circuit; located around 250km south of the city and is a former Motocross of Nations venue.
On the subject of future MXGP calendar developments Luongo remarked that a return to the Middle East is looking likely. Losail, Qatar opened the Grand Prix slate for five years from 2013 and the new Kuwait Motor City complex enlisted former MXGP track builder Greg Atkins to design and construct a GP-spec course and could be in the running to host an event. Luongo also said that Youthstream’s recent acquisition deal with Swiss company Infront will help with even more global spread of MXGP. (Nothing new has yet been seen ….. n.d.r.)
“The Middle East is still in negotiation,” he commented. “We are at the beginning of the year but I already have a good feeling that we will have something there for 2020. We have requests from South America and the Middle East which is positive for the trend of the championship.”
“We believe the boost of Infront will bring some requests but we have just started the collaboration,” he adds. “Nothing is finalised yet but there are a lot of talks with places outside of Europe and it shows that MXGP is very popular and interesting for people.”
MXGP currently visits Argentina, Indonesia (twice), Russia, China and Hong Kong as ‘flyaway’ fixtures.
