INT. ITALIA 3 – MANTOVA
La terza ed ultima prova degli Internazionali D’Italia di Motocross si è disputata sul tracciato di Mantova, che ospiterà un GP iridato il 12 Maggio. Pista caratterizzata da fondo sabbioso, che ha visto l’ennesima prova di forza del team Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.
Antonio Cairoli (KTM 450 SX-F) ha ottenuto il suo undicesimo titolo italiano senior (MX1 e Supercampione) con il terzo posto nella gara MX1 e la vittoria nella manche Supercampione, con i migliori 20 della MX2 e i migliori 20 della MX1. Il suo compagno di squadra Jorge Prado si è confermato imbattuto nella MX2 Prado, ma ha anche raccolto il terzo podio su tre nella gara Supercampione dimostrandosi sempre il migliore dei qualificati con la moto da 250cc. contro le più grandi motociclette 450cc. Lo spagnolo era 1-3 per il giorno e possedeva comodamente la divisione MX2 di quasi venti secondi dal successivo pilota più vicino.
Cairoli, autore di una netta pole nelle cronometrate del mattino, in gara MX1 è rimasto attardato alla prima curva ed è stato protagonista di una avvincente rimonta dalle retrovie. Dopo metà manche, ha guadagnato la terza posizione superando Paulin (Yamaha), poi è incappato in una scivolata e non ha potuto far meglio. Col terzo posto (alle spalle di Gajser, Honda e Febvre, Yamaha) Cairoli ha assicurato la vittoria del campionato MX1, con tre podi su tre.
Gran finale con la Supercampione, e Cairoli è andato in testa sin dal via per poi concludere con una netta vittoria (la terza su tre prove) davanti a Max Nagl (KTM) e al compagno di squadra Jorge Prado, come sempre velocissimo.
Lo stesso Prado, anche lui autore della pole nella mattina, aveva dominato la manche MX2 davanti ai francesi Moreau (Kawasaki) e (Vialle), vincendo a punteggio pieno il campionato MX2.
Antonio Cairoli: “Il campionato italiano è sempre un ottimo banco di prova in vista del mondiale, perché le piste sono impegnativi e ci sono piloti di valore: quest’anno quattro campioni del mondo. Abbiamo fatto buoni test con la moto e provato diverse soluzioni. Il mio campionato è stato quasi perfetto, con cinque vittorie e un terzo posto, per una partenza sbagliata, su sei manche. Abbiamo ancora un po’ di tempo in vista del mondiale e cercheremo di migliorare ancora. Sarà una stagione molto lunga e vogliamo farla da protagonisti”.
Jorge Prado: “È stato un campionato molto positivo e un ottimo allenamento pre-campionato. Oggi Mantova era una pista selettiva: grossi canali e punti insidiosi. Ho vinto la mia gara MX2 e poi ho fatto una buona partenza con i potenti 450. Ho fatto un bel duello con Nagl; non sono riuscito a superarlo nel finale ma sono soddisfatto. Anche per quanto riguarda la moto sono contento di queste tre gare che ci preparano all’ Argentina: siamo sulla buona strada!”.

Grand Prix venue ‘Mantova’ was the site for the third and final outing in the Internazionali D’Italia and third racing fixture for Cairoli, Prado and a large body of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team in successive weeks.
Chilly conditions graced the flat, compact and sandy course a short distance north of Bologna. Cairoli, who won the first Grand Prix of ‘Lombardia’ at Mantova in 2010, and had mathematically earned his eleventh senior Italian title (MX1 & Supercampione) last week at Ottobiano, rode to a solid 3rd position (just ahead of Gautier Paulin) in MX1. #222 boasts a strong 1-1-3 scorecard from his domestic efforts in the contest. He was back to front-running service in the ‘Supercampione’ moto and ended the Italian campaign with victory.
MX2 World Champion Prado not only remained unbeaten in the MX2 class but has also notched three podium finishes in the ‘Supercampione’ race against the bigger 450cc motorcycles. The Spaniard was 1-3 for the day and comfortably owned the MX2 division by almost twenty seconds from the next nearest rider.
Antonio Cairoli: “The Italian Championship is always a good series because we have a lot of champions on the line, this year especially, with four different world champions. We had a lot of things to test and the best way to do that was with racing. We had a perfect series, except for that first moto today: I was upset with my start. It was good in one way, and that’s to be able to make some passes and work through the pack and learn about that. This is also good training for the GPs. When we are on the line in the world championship it is a little bit different; everyone is extra motivated and doing their best to keep up with me and Jeffrey. I think since last year people have been working with us in mind. We will improve but they will improve also. We’ll see when the gate drops in MXGP but the championship there is very long and you have to be consistent and don’t make mistakes. This is the key.”
Jorge Prado: “It’s been a really good championship and great pre-season training. Mantova was a different kind of track today: big ruts and with some special demands. I won my MX2 race and then had a good jump [from the gate] against the 450s. I was battling a long time with [Max] Nagl and I couldn’t make the pass, but anyway I’m happy. The bike was working great in these races. We have some weeks of training ahead but we are in the good way and will go to Argentina in the best shape possible.”
Tom Vialle: “Today was my Red Bull KTM debut and I have to say I am really happy with how everything went. I rode well, and I was really comfortable on the bike and with my style and feeling. It was a positive day. The results help for my confidence and motivation for the next races. I’m really looking forward to my first Grand Prix in Argentina!”
