Herlings restarts work to go again in 2019

MXGP World Champion and the most successful rider across the FIM motorcycle racing disciplines in 2018, Red Bull KTM’s Jeffrey Herlings, is now plotting to defend his crown in 2019 and started work last week on set-up ideas and planning for the forthcoming twenty-round series that is expected to begin at Neuquen in Argentina in less than 100 days.

The Dutchman frequently commented on the physical and mental drain of the effort and commitment needed to regularly set the pace in the premier class, and be able to achieve 17 wins from 19, nineteen, podium appearances and to return from a broken collarbone to own seventeen consecutive motos.

Herlings took an extended break after the motocross of Nations at the beginning of October and only returned to his KTM 450 SX-F in mid-November.

“It is the first time that Jeffrey took such a big break; the last two years we could hardly get him off the bike,” said MX2 Team Manager and Team Technical co-ordinator Dirk Gruebel. “We didn’t want to stand in his way. He had to fully recover from this year to get hungry again. It was a good thing.”

Repeating his rate of spoils in 2019 is perhaps an unrealistic target (even if another 17 triumphs means that he will reach Stefan Everts’ vast 101 total of GP wins), and one of the big questions through the off-season is whether Herlings can reach the same depth of devotion and obsession to again find a similar level of performance. For Red Bull KTM and close confidants like Gruebel there is already little doubt that the Herlings Machine is again ready to churn.

“Jeffrey is hungry to prove that this was not just a one-time thing,” he says.
