Cairoli looks to MXGP second place at Assen

Defending World Champion Tony Cairoli admitted after the Grand Prix of Turkey last week that his focus for the rest of 2018 will involve a strong end to the campaign and the upcoming Motocross of Nations as the margin to MXGP championship leader Jeffrey Herlings rose to 95 points with just 100 left to score.

The 32 year old has all-but admitted defeat after a long season chasing his Red Bull KTM teammate and struggling with minor knee, hand and thumb injuries. “The next goal is to confirm second in the championship because Jeffrey is in front by a lot of points and to win some GPs if it’s possible,” he said in Afyon.

Cairoli returns to Assen next week, the site of his ninth world crown celebrations just twelve months ago, but will likely see Herlings clinch his first title in the premier division. The Sicilian was luckless at round eighteen of twenty in Turkey with a right hand complaint after clipping the Monster Energy track bridge and twisting the opposite knee to the one he aggravated at the Grand Prix of Switzerland. His form and fitness for the Dutch round depends on his recovery progress.

“Preparation depends on my hand and what the damage is,” he said last weekend. “I hope I can try to ride some sand; Assen it is a GP I really like and there are always a lot of Dutch fans.”

“For sure Jeffrey is going for the title but it would be nice for me to finish on the podium and hopefully win,” he added, recognising that Herlings will be cautious to secure the necessary points for the championship. “I know it is very difficult [to win the GP] but our goal is to stay away from the injuries and build up for a good last three races.”

#222 has racked up impressive stats with his 13 podium trophies from 18 rounds and is one of only two riders to defeat Herlings in 2018 (the only other one to hold the red plate) but his accomplishments pale in comparison to Herlings’ form and 15 wins from 17 contested by the Dutchman. Cairoli does have the incentive of trying to displace his teammate from the top of the podium at his third home Grand Prix of the year at Imola at the end of September and the culmination to a long MXGP term.
