Jonass su MX2 shootout: “Non ho nulla da perdere”
Il campione del mondo MX2 Pauls Jonass ha appena quattro manche per compensare un deficit di 24 punti con il compagno di squadra Red Bull KTM Jorge Prado per difendere con successo il suo titolo prima di passare alla MXGP nel 2019. Il lettone, che ha tenuto la tabella rossa per i primi 13 GP della stagione e che attualmente vanta altre due vittorie in manche rispetto allo spagnolo, spera ancora di essere solo il terzo pilota a difendere la corona MX2 per il team ufficiale.
Per il secondo anno consecutivo in MX2 sembra essere diretta verso uno showdown finale. Jonass ha dichiarato che il primo Campionato FIM MX della Lettonia si è avvicinato al sipario in Francia nel 2017. Ora il 21enne, che si dice fortemente che cambierà colori e andrà all’allestimento Rockstar Energy IceOne Husqvarna MXGP la prossima stagione, sa che un guadagno di punti decente su Prado la prossima settimana ad Assen per il Gran Premio d’Olanda è essenziale se vuole ripetere la sua impresa del 2017. Jonass ha già assicurato il secondo posto in campionato grazie al suo “cuscino” di 156 punti su Thomas Kjer Olsen ed è quindi in grado di attaccare Prado e andare a rompere il distacco.
“Andrò ad Assen con uno stato d’animo rilassato”, ha detto domenica scorsa in Turchia dopo essere arrivato secondo classificato per il suo dodicesimo podio in 18 round e mentre Prado ha perso il podio per la terza volta (entrambi sono apparsi nei tre migliori in nove occasioni). “Mi piacciono le piste di sabbia e non ho nulla da perdere. Sono 24 punti indietro e non c’è pressione. Devo solo guidare al meglio ogni singola moto. “
Preoccupantemente per il #1, Prado ha una forma eccellente nella sabbia poco profonda ma sconnessa di Assen, andando sul podio nel suo primo debutto al GP nel 2016 e assaporando la vittoria dodici mesi fa. Dopo il viaggio in Olanda, MXGP si fermerà per un altro fine settimana prima dell’ultimo round dei venti a Imola, Italia: in totale 100 punti possibili rimangono nella battaglia per il trono MX2 ma Prado ha dieci vittorie e quindici podi (solo un terzo) e probabilmente ha lo slancio. Qualunque sia il risultato MX2, la Red Bull KTM confermerà i titoli in entrambe le classi per il secondo anno consecutivo e per la settima volta dall’inizio del decennio.

Jonass on MX2 shootout: “I have nothing to lose”
MX2 World Champion Pauls Jonass has just four motos to peg back a 24 point deficit to Red Bull KTM teammate Jorge Prado to successfully defend his title before a move to MXGP in 2019. The Latvian, who held the red plate for the first 13 GPs of the season and who currently boasts two more moto wins than the Spaniard, is still hoping to be only the third rider to defend the MX2 crown for the factory team.
For the second year in a row MX2 looks to be heading to a final round showdown. Jonass claimed Latvia’s very first FIM MX Championship at the curtain closer in France in 2017. Now the 21 year old, who is heavily rumoured to be changing ‘colour’ and going to the Rockstar Energy IceOne Husqvarna MXGP set-up next season, knows that a decent points gain on Prado next week at Assen for the Dutch Grand Prix is essential if he wants to repeat his feat of ’17. Jonass is already assured of second place in the championship thanks to his 156 point cushion over Thomas Kjer Olsen and is thus in a position to attack Prado and go for broke.
“I will go to Assen with a relaxed feeling,” he said last Sunday in Turkey after finishing as runner-up for his 12th podium appearance from 18 rounds and as Prado missed the box for only the third time (they have both appeared in the top three on nine occasions). “I like sand tracks and I have nothing to lose. I am 24 points behind and there is no pressure. I just have to ride my best every single moto.”
Worryingly for #1 Prado has excellent form in the shallow but bumpy Assen sand by walking the rostrum in his first full Grand Prix debut in 2016 and tasting victory twelve months ago. After the trip to Holland MXGP will break for another weekend before the last round of twenty at Imola, Italy: in total 100 possible points remain in the battle for the MX2 throne but Prado has ten wins and fifteen podiums (only one third position) and arguably has the momentum. Whatever the MX2 outcome Red Bull KTM will confirm titles in both classes for the second consecutive year and for the seventh time since the start of the decade.
