Jonass: “MXGP non è nella mia mente”
Il campione del mondo MX2 Pauls Jonass ha mancato il podio per la terza volta negli ultimi quattro round della stagione 2018 a Lommel per il Gran Premio del Belgio e ha visto il distacco dal compagno di squadra e dal detentore della tabella rossa Jorge Prado salire a 28 punti.
Le voci riportano un calo della forma del 21 enne, specialmente dopo aver dominato i primi tre appuntamenti della serie in modo così completo in Argentina, Olanda e Spagna. Alcuni affermano che il #1 stia già pensando ad un passaggio alla classe MXGP nel 2019, altri ritengono che sia indeciso su quale categoria tentare dal momento che volendo è ancora nei termini per altri due anni sulla KTM 250 SX-F mentre il pettegolezzo nel paddock ruota attorno all’assenza di Marc de Reuver come un’influenza costante, dato che l’olandese faceva parte dell’equipaggio di Jonass quando vinse il titolo MX2 l’anno scorso.
Jonass ha finito 5° a Lommel ma è stato sfortunato ad aggrovigliarsi con un backmarker mentre cercava il vincitore ,Prado, nella prima manche e si trovava vicino a Brent Van Doninck quando il belga ha saltato selvaggiamente il cancello della seconda manche e la sua partenza ha sofferto per distrazione. Il team manager della Red Bull KTM Dirk Gruebel crede che il suo recupero e il risultato complessivo mostrino segni che il campione è ancora saldamente in difesa del titolo.
“Sembrava molto meglio di come ha fatto nelle ultime tre gare; abbiamo visto qualche litigio quando le cose non andavano così bene “, ha affermato il tedesco. “Nei punti ed era tre-quattro secondi più veloce di Jorge al comando e questo sembrava promettente, anche per la sua mentalità e sicurezza. Non puoi contarlo. Ha perso punti a Lommel ma ha preso anche una certa confidenza. “
Jonass ha pagato molto per alcuni errori, forse di valutazione in questa stagione. Prado ha meno vittorie in manche e detiene solo altre tre vittorie in GP, ma ha totalizzato altre quattro presenze sul podio. Lo stesso pilota dice che la motivazione per ottenere il titolo back-to-back non è un problema.
“Non penso che sia la motivazione; Mi sto allenando duramente ma è stata solo una sfortuna, “ha dichiarato in esclusiva domenica sera a Lommel. “Forse ho bisogno di andare in chiesa o fare qualcosa! Cose come stare lontando dai doppiati, o non guardare Van Doninck al cancello, come al primo turno in Indonesia … Penso che qualcuno mi stia veramente mettendo alla prova, ma non mi arrendo. Ci sono ancora cinque gare da disputare “.
Jonass respinge anche la prospettiva incombente della MXGP. Con la partenza di Glenn Coldenhoff a Standing Construct KTM e crede che i campioni del mondo schiereranno tre piloti sulla 450 SX-F (Cairoli, Herlings & Jonass) e solo il Prado nella MX2.
“Questo non è nella mia mente, è b ****** t”, ha affermato. “Sono concentrato su questo campionato e poi penseremo alla 450. Ho una grande squadra dietro di me e anche per il prossimo anno, quindi non devo preoccuparmi di questo genere di cose. Ne ho già un paio di 450 in attesa nella factory, quindi quando avremo finito ci penseremo. “

Jonass: “MXGP is not on my mind”
MX2 World Champion Pauls Jonass missed the podium for the third time in the last four rounds of the 2018 season at Lommel for the Grand Prix of Belgium and watched the gap to teammate and red plate holder Jorge Prado grow to 28 points.
Rumours have surrounded the 21 year old’s drop in form, especially after he dominated the first three fixtures of the series so comprehensively in Argentina, Holland and Spain. Some claim #1 is already thinking about a switch to the MXGP class in 2019, others believe he is undecided about which category to attempt as he is still eligible for two more terms on the KTM 250 SX-F while paddock gossip revolves around the absence of Marc de Reuver as a steadying influence as the Dutchman was part of Jonass’ crew when he won the MX2 title last year.
Jonass finished 5th at Lommel but was unfortunate to tangle with a backmarker while hunting eventual winner Prado in the first moto and was situated next to Brent Van Doninck when the Belgian wildly leapt over the stationary gate in the second race and his start subsequently suffered. Red Bull KTM Team Manager Dirk Gruebel believes his recovery and overall result showed signs that the champion is still firmly set on his title defence.
“He looked much better than [he did in] the last three races; we saw some fight when things were not going that well,” the German opined. “At points he was three-four seconds faster than Jorge at the front and that looks promising, even for his mindset and confidence. You cannot count him out. He lost points at Lommel but took some confidence as well.”
Jonass has paid heavily for some races errors and misjudgement this season. Prado has less moto wins and only holds three more overall GP victories but has totalled four more podium appearances. The rider himself says that motivation to get back-to-back crowns is not an issue.
“I don’t think it is motivation; I am training hard but it’s just been some bad luck,” he said exclusively on Sunday night in Lommel. “Maybe I need to go to Church or do something! Things like the lapper, Van Doninck in the gate, the first turn crash in Indonesia…I think someone is really testing me but I will not give up there are still five races to go.”
Jonass also dismisses the looming prospect of MXGP. With Glenn Coldenhoff’s departure to Standing Construct KTM it is believed that the world champions will field three riders on the 450 SX-F (Cairoli, Herlings & Jonass) and just Prado in MX2. “That’s not on my mind, that’s b******t,” he asserted. “I’m focussed on this championship and then we will think of the 450. I have a great team behind me and also for next year so I don’t need to be worrying about that kind of stuff. I have one 450 already waiting in the workshop so when this is done then we’ll think about it.”
