Herlings not feeling championship pressure

2018 MXGP has been a Red Bull KTM contest. Only Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Clement Desalle has walked the top step of the podium in defiance of the dominance by Jeffrey Herlings (12 from 15 GPs) and Tony Cairoli (2 triumphs).

Both Herlings and Cairoli have suffered with injury mishaps but the former emphatically returned from collarbone surgery to win races in Indonesia (two), Czech Republic and Belgium. Herlings currently leads the world champion (who has missed the rostrum only twice and has been runner-up to his teammate nine times) by 36 points with just five rounds to go but 250 points left to grasp.

The Dutchman has been authoritative this term with 23 moto chequered flags from 30 however he admits a certain amount of dismay that his margin in the standings is not larger, despite missing the Grand Prix of Lombardia due to the collarbone break and Cairoli’s competitiveness and consistency is keeping the dispute for the crown close.

“It’s a pity: winning 12 from 15 GPs and twice second and to be only leading the championship by 36 points is fairly devastating,” he said. “We worked so hard to get six or so points every weekend and then in just one week I lost fifty. It’s tough to accept, but nobody said I had to break my collarbone. I think we should still be thankful for the position we are in now. It’s just a shame I missed Ottobiano because it is a track I love going to.”

The Red Bull KTM tussle will be decided in Grands Prix in Switzerland, Bulgaria, Turkey, Holland and Italy and Herlings – who already has three world championships to his name and should arguably have two more accolades if injury had not curtailed advantages in 2014 and 2015 – insisted that he doesn’t feel the ‘weight’ of the red plate; a distinction he has held since the tremendously entertaining Grand Prix of Argentina that opened the campaign.

“There’s no pressure. When there is only five points between you then that’s pressure but 36 is over a moto and a bit of breathing room,” he said. “I can afford to mess up once or get a DNF but I’m not planning on messing it up again. I’ll be doing some good, safe training and trying not to go close to the edge. In the next race if I’m not capable of winning then I’ll settle for a podium or whatever. It is consistency that wins championship and that’s what I am going to fight for.”
