Herlings ha risolto il ruolo di Vlaanderen nel Team Netherlands
Apparentemente l’inclusione di Vlaanderen da parte dell’Olanda è stata fatta su richiesta di Herlings in quanto la squadra non può contare su un altro corridore HRC Brian Bogers a causa di infortunio e LRT KTM Davy Pootjes non è stato in grado di trovare la forma nella categoria nel 2018. La squadra “arancione” è salita sul podio nelle ultime due edizioni del concorso annuale internazionale e la presenza di Vlaanderen (con il Sud Africa difficilmente schierato) potrebbe garantire a Herlings e al compagno di squadra Glenn Coldenhoff di essere ancora una volta in lizza per il trofeo di Chamberlain .
“Fondamentalmente ho quasi scelto il ragazzo insieme alle persone della Federazione olandese”, ha ammesso Herlings a Lommel la scorsa settimana e in un’intervista per il sito web americano di riferimento www.racerxonline.com. “Ho detto: ‘abbiamo bisogno di quel ragazzo a bordo, è la migliore opzione che possiamo possedere e ha vinto manche e GP in MX2.’ Attualmente non c’è nessuno migliore.”
“È un bravo ragazzo con una buona moto e una buona squadra”, ha aggiunto Herlings. “Ha nazionalità unita e se possiamo prenderlo allora dovremmo. Ovviamente nessuno lo vede come un pilota “olandese” perché è cresciuto in Sud Africa ma, ancora, non credo che ci interessi. Se è il migliore per la nostra squadra, è il migliore. “
Vlaanderen non è l’unico pilota ad aver usato una scappatoia per i passaporti e competere al Nazioni. Americani come Zach Osborne, Kyle Regal e Jimmy Albertson hanno tutti rappresentato Puerto Rico al famoso evento.

Herlings resolute over Vlaanderen’s role in Dutch Nations team
MXGP World Championship leader Jeffrey Herlings has spoken out in support of Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen as the MX2 pick for the Dutch team at the 71st Motocross of Nations at Redbud, Michigan on October 7th. The 22 year old South African has been based in Europe for a number of years and holds a Dutch passport. He won his first Grand Prix this season and is vying for the top three in the MX2 class along with Thomas Kjer Olsen and Ben Watson.
Vlaanderen’s inclusion by the Dutch was apparently made at Herlings’ bidding as the team cannot count on another HRC rider Brian Bogers due to injury and LRT KTM’s Davy Pootjes has not been able to find form in the category in 2018. The ‘orange’ squad have made the podium at the last two editions of the international annual racing contest and Vlaanderen’s presence (with South Africa unlikely to enter a line-up) could ensure that Herlings and Red Bull KTM teammate Glenn Coldenhoff can be in contention for the Chamberlain trophy once more.
“Basically I almost picked the guy together with the people from the Dutch Federation,” Herlings admitted at Lommel last week and in an interview for seminal American website www.racerxonline.com. “I said: ‘we need that guy onboard, he’s the best option we can possibly have and has been winning motos and GPs in MX2.’ There is currently nobody better.”
“He’s a nice kid with a good bike and team,” Herlings added. “He has joint nationality and if we can take him then we should. Obviously nobody sees him as a ‘Dutch’ rider because he grew up in South Africa but, still, I don’t think we care. If he’s the best for our team then he’s the best.”
Vlaanderen is not the only rider to have used a passport loophole to compete at the Nations. Americans such as Zach Osborne, Kyle Regal and Jimmy Albertson have all represented Puerto Rico at the famed event.
