British Champion Irwin fighting to find MXGP pace

For an example of how freakishly fast the FIM Motocross World Championship has been this year then look no further than the efforts of Hitachi ASA KTM UK’s Graeme Irwin. The Northern Irishman was a convincing 2017 British Champion and victor of one of the fastest national series in Europe but #55 has struggled to break into the top fifteen of the MXGP class.

Irwin’s challenge provides insight for what it is like as a successful newcomer to make the breakthrough to the upper echelons of the leaderboard in Grand Prix. Not only does the KTM man have to deal with the speed and experience of his peers but also the technical demands of the MXGP tracks.

“It has been a learning curve for sure. We have good weekends, tough weekends,” said Irwin who made various MX2 appearances at the start of the decade but injury forced him to re-establish his career on the UK stage before finding an MXGP opportunity with Roger Magee’s Grand Prix winning squad. “A GP is obviously a lot bigger prospect whereas something like the British Championship happens on one day and a lot less stress. There is a lot more to analyse in MXGP and the track is changing a lot more session-to-session. How they prep the tracks is totally different. I know the British tracks like the back of my hand!”

Irwin is in contention to defend his British title but commitments on the domestic scene and his Grand Prix education took a four week-hit earlier this summer with a nasty burn injury on his back that forced him to temporarily stop riding and training. Irwin, who is renowned for his fight and determination, has looked overawed by the demands of MXGP at times this season and has posted points in both motos at only two rounds but is ‘gripping the towel’ tightly.

“I want to be battling in the top fifteen,” he says. “At the moment I want to keep inside the points. I was in thirteenth for almost the whole moto at Matterley for the British GP and then lost some places at the end just because of the time off I needed due to the injury. I just want to ride like I know I can; that’s my goal.”
