Covington ritorna negli Stati Uniti nel 2019
La partecipazione americana al MXGP potrebbe potenzialmente mancare nel 2019 con Thomas Covington di Rockstar Energy Husqvarna che confermerà il suo ritorno negli Stati Uniti dopo cinque stagioni in cui ha rappresentato sia la Kawasaki che la sua attuale squadra in MX2 Grands Prix.
Sebbene il 22enne sia idoneo per un altro anno nella categoria prima dell’invecchiamento, è già stato concordato un passaggio alla configurazione Husqvarna degli Stati Uniti per il 2019. Covington ha guidato per la squadra belga di Jacky Martins per due anni e ha fatto entrambe le campagne caratterizzate per infortunio mentre si aspettava di essere in lotta per il titolo.
Il pilota dell’Alabama ha commentato che guiderà un FC250 nelle gare AMA Supercross e Motocross e tornerà negli Stati Uniti dopo il completamento del Gran Premio finale a Imola, in Italia.
“È stata una decisione difficile per me e tutti sanno quanto io ami i GP e tutta la gente qui, ma con il modo in cui ha funzionato [allora] è stato nel migliore interesse di tutti tornare indietro la prossima stagione”, ha detto Covington. “E ‘stato difficile prendere una decisione, ma una volta che ho fatto ero davvero eccitato ed entusiasta di tornare a casa. Sono stato qui in Europa per un po ‘quindi sarà una bella sensazione. Sarò nel team Rockstar Husqvarna di Bobby Hewitt e sono davvero felice che abbia fiducia in me per il supercross e mi abbia dato una possibilità. “
Covington ha corso per la sua seconda pole position stagionale a St Jean D’Angely ed è tornato in forma dopo aver recuperato dai legamenti del ginocchio sinistro tesi.
“Sono concentrato al 100% sul resto di questa stagione GP e, avendo preso la decisione [2019] – voglio ottenere il maggior numero di vittorie possibili ora”, ha osservato. “Mi ha motivato a farlo davvero. Non appena l’ultima gara sarà finita, tornerò per iniziare l’allenamento in supercross. “
Covington ha fatto il suo debutto nel Gran Premio in Qatar nel 2014 con un’apparizione da wild card e ha ottenuto il miglior risultato in tre gare. L’uscita ha incoraggiato l’adolescente a tentare il campionato del mondo FIM su base permanente mentre si trovava nel nord Europa. È diventato il primo americano a celebrare il successo del GP con due vittorie in Messico nel 2015 e nel 2017 e ha anche vinto il Grand Prix Pays de Montbeliard l’anno scorso; finendo quarto nella classifica mondiale.
“Correre in GP mi ha reso un pilota più completo in molte situazioni”, ha valutato. “Sono davvero contento di aver deciso di venire quando avevo diciassette-diciotto anni. È stata un’esperienza fantastica e non vorrei dimenticarla per niente e penso di essere meglio preparato ora per il Supercross rispetto a quando sono uscito da dilettante. “
Le voci sulla sella lasciata vuota in MX2 di Covington prevedono che l’australiano Jed Beaton abbia firmato per correre al fianco di Thomas Kjer Olsen.

Covington set for U.S. return in 2019
American participation in MXGP could potentially drop in 2019 with Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Thomas Covington confirming his return to the USA after five seasons representing both Kawasaki and his current team in MX2 Grands Prix.
Although the 22 year old would be legible for one more term in the category before aging-out, a switch to the U.S. Husqvarna set-up for 2019 has already been agreed. Covington has ridden for Jacky Martins’ Belgium-based team for two years and had both campaigns skewered by injury while expecting to be in title contention.
The rider from Alabama commented that he’ll steer an FC250 in AMA Supercross and Motocross contests and will return to the States after completion of the final Grand Prix in Imola, Italy.
“It was a tough decision for me and everyone knows how much I love the GPs and all the people here but with the way it worked out [then] it was in everybody’s best interests to go back next season,” Covington said. “It was hard to make the decision but once I did I was really excited and stoked to move back home. I’ve been over here in Europe for a while so it will be a good feeling. I’ll be on Bobby Hewitt’s Rockstar Husqvarna team and I’m really happy he has faith in me for supercross and giving me a shot at it.”
Covington raced to his second pole position of the season at St Jean D’Angely and is back on form after making a recovery from strained left knee ligaments. “I’m 100% focussed on the rest of this GP season and – having made the decision [about 2019] – I want to get as many wins as possible now,” he remarked. “It has motivated me to really go for it. As soon as the last race is over I’ll head back to start training for supercross.”
Covington made his grand prix debut in Qatar in 2014 with a wild-card appearance and scored a top three moto result. The outing encouraged the teenager to attempt the FIM world championship on a permanent basis while being based in northern Europe. He became the first American to celebrate GP success with two victories in Mexico in 2015 and 2017 and also won the Grand Prix Pays de Montbeliard last year; finishing fourth in the world standings.
“Racing the GPs made me a more well-rounded rider in many situations,” he evaluated. ‘I’m really glad I decided to come when I was seventeen-eighteen. It has been an awesome experience and I would not take it back for anything and I think I am better prepared now for Supercross compared to when I just came out of the amateurs.”
Heavy rumours about Covington’s MX2 saddle involve Australian Jed Beaton being signed to race alongside Thomas Kjer Olsen.
