Simpson a doubt for Latvia with rib and pelvis problem

Britain’s sole MXGP Grand Prix winner, Shaun Simpson, is again battling poor luck with injury in order to take his place in the FIM world championship gate. The Wilvo Yamaha rider crashed on Saturday at the Grand Prix of Russia ten days ago and cracked three ribs and chipped part of his pelvis and remains doubtful for round seven of the series in Latvia this weekend.

“It has been a tough one trying to get the ball rolling,” the Scotsman said of his 2018 campaign so far that has been blighted by a virus and a tweaked shoulder in another spill at the Grand Prix of Trentino.

“I was told by the doctors that the fractures were not dangerous,” he explains. “As long as I can handle the pain I can ride but that’s not what I’m worried about at the moment, it is the thought of re-fracturing the rib somehow and prolonging time to race. I want to recover sufficiently so that everything is strong and I can come back and ride GPs and try for some reasonable results. To come back and ride around for anything less than a top ten finish is not relevant or important to me.”

The former multi British Champion was sidelined by a broken hand and arm in 2017 shortly after ruling the Grand Prix of Indonesia and his spate of misfortune is galling for the Wilvo team who have also lost Arnaud Tonus for the entire 2018 term due to a badly broken shoulder. If Simpson does not travel to Kegums then round eight at Teutschenthal a week late provides another chance. “I want to put this behind me because I feel physically well and sharp, full of energy,” #24 added. “If we can get over this one then I really still feel I have a lot to show.”

Great Britain have not enjoyed the best results in MXGP to-date with Max Anstie struggling to reach the same levels of performance at the end of his rookie season in 2017 and also coping with the effects of a warm-up crash and concussion in Spain for round three. Tommy Searle has yet to compete since the second fixture of the year due to a broken collarbone.
