Assen ha messo in scena il Motocross of Nations 2019
Tre anni che il Gran Premio d’Olanda del Campionato Mondiale FIM Motocross viene ospitato nello storico circuito TT di Assen e hanno incoraggiato gli organizzatori, LDP International, a lanciare il Motocross delle Nazioni 2019 e la prima volta che l’evento annuale di punta sarà in scena nei Paesi Bassi 2004 (Lierop).
Lee van Dam, direttore di LDP, afferma che l’accordo per garantire la competizione vecchia 72 anni è questione di poche settimane.
“Ne abbiamo discusso per il 2018, ma la decisione non è arrivata in tempo dal governo perché abbiamo bisogno di un grande investimento”, dice l’olandese. “Per il 2019 questo sembra OK e ci aspettiamo l’approvazione finale nelle prossime due-tre settimane; i segnali della città di Assen, del governo locale e del governo statale sono positivi, quindi non ci aspettiamo problemi “.
La presenza della folla ad Assen e il profilo in crescita del Red Bull KTM Jeffrey Herlings, che guida la classifica MXGP e ha vinto quattro volte su cinque nel 2018, sono stati fattori importanti nel ritorno del Nazioni sulla sabbia olandese.
“Assolutamente vero,” dice Van Dam. “Il successo di Jeffrey aiuta sicuramente. Ci è voluto del tempo per mostrare alla gente cos’è il motocross e ci aspettiamo subito più folla, ma vediamo che il business-to-business sta migliorando e per il Nazioni abbiamo già molte richieste. Pensiamo che sarà buono “.
La costruzione del MXGP ad Assen ha significato una costruzione e un layout simili attraverso le tre edizioni dal 2015 al 2017 e con il quarto Gran Premio fissato per il 15-16 settembre. Richiede una grande quantità di sabbia e un posizionamento complicato attraverso la chicane Gert Timmer e metà del famoso rettilineo di partenza e pitlane. Ci sono voci secondo le quali la pista del Nazioni comporterebbe modifiche successive rispetto alla MXGP, ma Van Dam non ha potuto confermare la speculazione.
“La richiesta era per qualcosa di leggermente diverso ma non abbiamo troppe opzioni qui”, ha detto, indicando il complesso del paddock mentre parlava al recente round di WorldSBK presso la struttura. “Dobbiamo attraversare gli edifici e il paddock perché la partenza è troppo lunga, ma penso che abbiamo bisogno di più sabbia e di cambiare un po ‘la pista”.
Questo settembre Assen chiuderà Losail come sede permanente per gli sport motoristici più lunga sul tracciato MXGP (il sito del Qatar ha messo in scena i Gran Premi dal 2013 al 2017). Van Dam crede che il motocross abbia un posto in questo ambiente; il circuito di Imola ospiterà il loro evento inaugurale MXGP una settimana dopo la tappa olandese. Donington Park, Franciacorta e Zolder sono altre infrastrutture di corse su strada che hanno ospitato l’MXoN di questo secolo.
“Costruire una pista da motocross qui è come un sogno … ma è successo”, dice Van Dam. “Facciamo molta pubblicità e lavoriamo su questo evento. Pensiamo che, in un certo senso, questo sia il futuro del motocross, e non rimanere bloccato nel fango con i tuoi sponsor. Abbiamo tutti i servizi qui. Penso che il motocross debba cercare posti simili per mostrare questo fantastico motorsport a più pubblico. Qui, siamo fortunati perché abbiamo tutti i saloni con le aziende, le banche e altri grandi sponsor; le persone non erano a conoscenza di questo bellissimo sport ma ora sono molto felici e considerano il motocross uno degli eventi più importanti di Assen durante l’anno “.
La squadra olandese ha terminato come seconda alle ultime due edizioni del Motocross delle Nazioni.

Assen set to stage 2019 Motocross of Nations
Three years hosting the Dutch Grand Prix of the FIM Motocross World Championship at the historic TT Circuit Assen has emboldened the organisers, LDP International, to pitch for the 2019 Motocross of Nations and the first time the annual flagship event will be staged in the Netherlands since 2004 (Lierop).
Lee van Dam, Director of LDP, says the agreement to secure the 72 year old contest is a matter of weeks away. “We discussed it for 2018 but the decision did not come in time from the government as we require a big investment,” the Dutchman says. “For 2019 this looks OK and we expect final approval in the next two-three weeks; signs from the City of Assen, the local government and the state government are positive so we don’t expect any problems.”
Decent crowd attendance at Assen and the burgeoning profile of Red Bull KTM’s Jeffrey Herlings, who leads the MXGP standings and has won four from five rounds in 2018, have been important factors in the Nations returning to Dutch sand. “Absolutely right,” says Van Dam. “Jeffrey’s success for sure helps. It took some time to show people what motocross is and we expected more crowds immediately but we see business-to-business is improving and for the Nations we already have many requests. We think it will be a good one.”
Construction of the MXGP course at Assen has meant a similar build and layout through the three editions from 2015 to 2017 and with the fourth Grand Prix set for September 15-16. It requires a large importation of sand and complicated placement across the Gert Timmer chicane and half of the famous start-finish straight and pitlane. There are rumours that the Nations track would involve subsequent alterations compared to MXGP but Van Dam could not confirm the speculation. “The request was for something a little different but we don’t have too many options here,” he said, pointing at the paddock complex while speaking at the recent round of WorldSBK at the facility. “We have to cross through the buildings and the paddock because the start straight is too long but I do think we need more sand and to change the track a little bit.”
This September Assen will close up to Losail as the longest-serving permanent motorsport venue on the MXGP trail (the Qatar site staged Grands Prix from 2013-2017). Van Dam believes motocross has a place in such surroundings; the Imola circuit will stage their inaugural MXGP event a week after the Dutch stop. Donington Park, Franciacorta and Zolder are other road racing infrastructure that have entertained the ‘MXoN’ this century.
“Building a [motocross] track here is like a dream…but it happened,” Van Dam says. “We do a lot of publicity and work on this event. We think, in a way, this is the future of motocross, and to not be stuck in the mud with your sponsors. We have all the facilities here. I think motocross needs to look for similar places to show this fantastic motorsport to more public. Here, we are lucky because we have all the pit lounges with the companies, banks and other big sponsors; people were not aware of this beautiful sport but now they are very happy and consider motocross one of the major events at Assen during the year.”
The Dutch team have finished as runners-up at the last two incarnations of the Motocross of Nations.
