MXGP nella nuova sede del Medio Oriente in Kuwait?
Lo scorso fine settimana la serie MotoGP è iniziata per il quindicesimo anno consecutivo sul circuito internazionale di Losail in Qatar. Mentre le MotoGP, le Moto2 e le Moto3 hanno tuonato intorno all’asfalto, la forte brezza ha iniziato a ruzzolare attraverso la pista abbandonata della MXGP appena fuori la curva 1.
MXGP ha lanciato a Losail e l’impianto di illuminazione artificiale su misura per cinque anni tra il 2013 e il 2017 e per la durata del contratto tra i promotori di QMMF e Grand Prix Youthstream. L’evento è stato uno dei più visivamente spettacolari del calendario ed è stato popolare tra i team e i riders, ma ha sofferto di magre presenze e un presunto cambio di direzione all’interno della QMMF; il nuovo personale ha deciso di non rinnovare l’accordo.
All’epoca della conferenza stampa inaugurale della stagione 2017 a Losail, Youthstream ha affermato di avere altre possibilità di organizzare un Grand Prix nella regione e ora sembra che MXGP potrebbe essere vicino a un ritorno in Medio Oriente. Greg Atkins, un ex consulente dei design delle piste e creatore di tracciati come Neuquen in Argentina e il layout sabbioso di Assen, sembra aver lavorato sul sito di motocross della nuova Kuwait Motor Town in F1. Il vasto complesso può ospitare un certo numero di discipline motoristiche ed è stato inizialmente programmato per l’apertura di questo mese.
Il Kuwait Motor Town non ha ancora un contratto internazionale per un evento sanzionato dalla FIM e MXGP potrebbe essere il primo. “Il Kuwait ha espresso il suo interesse ad organizzare una MXGP in futuro, ma nulla è ancora confermato”, ha confermato il vicepresidente della Youthstream David Luongo in esclusiva. “Stanno costruendo un fantastico complesso vicino a Kuwait City.”

MXGP to new Middle East home in Kuwait?
Last weekend the MotoGP series began for the fifteenth consecutive year at the Losail International circuit in Qatar. While the MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 bikes thundered around the asphalt the strong breeze rolled tumbleweed across the abandoned MXGP track just outside of Turn 1.
MXGP launched at Losail and the custom-made floodlit facility for five years between 2013 and 2017 and for the duration of the contract between the QMMF and Grand Prix promoters Youthstream. The event was one of the most visually spectacular on the calendar and was popular with the teams and riders but suffered from meagre attendances and an allegedly change of direction within the QMMF; new personnel decided not to renew the deal.
At the time of the 2017 season-opening press conference at Losail, Youthstream claimed they had other possibilities to stage a Grand Prix in the region and now it seems that MXGP could be close to a return to the Middle East. Track Design consultant Greg Atkins, a former Youthstream employee and creator of courses such as the well-received Neuquen in Argentina as well as the sandy layout at Assen, has apparently been working on the motocross site within the new F1-spec Kuwait Motor Town. The vast complex can host a number of motorsport disciplines and was initially planned for opening this month.
Kuwait Motor Town does not yet have any international contract for an FIM sanctioned event and MXGP could be the very first. “Kuwait expressed its interest to organize a MXGP in future but nothing is confirmed yet,” confirmed Youthstream VP David Luongo exclusively. “They are building a fantastic complex close to Kuwait City.”
