FIM Motocross World Championship – MX1 / MX2
RED SAND (Comunitat Valenciana, Spagna) 21 Marzo 2018 – La MXGP è salpata per la Spagna come il 3° round del FIM Motocross World Championship 2018 si sposta dal clima fresco della Valkenswaard per il calore della sabbia rossa. La MXGP di La Comunitat Valenciana sarà il primo MXGP che si tiene presso il circuito spagnolo Red Sand MX & Enduro trak, una struttura che è una delle preferite per allenamenti di molte squadre MXGP e MX2 A Valencia Region. L’ultima volta che la FIM Motocross World Championship è stata in terra Spagnola era nel 2016 presso il circuito di Talavera de la Reina.
La nuova fermata del calendario ospiterà anche il primo round della serie del Campionato Europeo Motocross EMX250 insieme con il secondo turno di EMX300. Il fine settimana sarà pieno di azione con 92 piloti entrati nella classe EMX250, 39 in EMX300 e 79 tra le due classi premier di MXGP e MX2, tra cui MXGP e MX2 Red plate Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Jeffrey Herlings e Pauls Jonass.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Jeffrey Herlings ha 2 vittorie assolute in 2 gare nel 2018, ma il compagno di squadra e campione in carica MXGP Antonio Cairoli è stato fianco a fianco. Questo fine settimana si può benissimo vedere un altra grande battaglia tra i due, anche se Herlings potrebbe avere il leggero vantaggio in quanto si è allenato sul circuito di sabbia mentre per Cairoli sarà una nuova esperienza.
Un pilota da guardare è Monster Energy Yamaha Factory di MXGP Jeremy Van Horebeek che ha avuto una velocità impressionante sia in Argentina e la settimana scorsa prima di un crash e ha concluso il suo week-end finendo 10° assoluto.
Il compagno di squadra Monster Energy Yamaha MXGP Romain Febvre è stato coerente finora con due top 5. In una stagione che ha iniziato molto meglio dell’ultima, Febvre sarà in cerca di un podio Domenica.
Del Team HRC Tim Gajser, che è stato il vincitore dell’edizione 2016 del MXGP di Spagna, si sfiderà nella sua seconda gara dopo essere tornato da un infortunio, dopo aver mostrato velocità impressionante con un mese di pausa a Valkenswaard insieme a pura grinta dopo due cadute segna un 9° e un 13° per un 9° assoluto.
Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Gautier Paulin appare determinato a combattere con artisti del calibro di Herlings e Cairoli dopo il suo primo podio al GP d’Europa. Mentre Paulin insieme a tanti altri ha faticato a non commettere errori sul circuito di Valkenswaard, avrà bisogno di trovare un ritmo più veloce se vuole lottare per la vittoria.
Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team Clement Desalle è un altro pilota che è stato costante e si trova attualmente terzo in zona punti. Desalle ha ancora trovato il podio, ma con la sua velocità e la capacità di avere consecutivamente fatto gare forti, non è una questione di se, ma di quanto il belga potrebbe trovare feeling e farlo accadere questa Domenica.
Ultimo ma non meno importante è il pilota del Marchetti Racing Team KTM Jose Butron a cui si unirà 920 del Gruppo Fly Ander Valentin come gli unici piloti MXGP a chiamare la Comunitat Valenciana un GP di casa.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Pauls Jonass ha vinto ogni gara a punti pieni finora quest’anno e ha condotto ogni giro dopo holeshots al GP d’Europa lo scorso fine settimana. Con 100 punti al suo attivo ha già un vantaggio 18 punti in classifica dopo solo 2 turni.
Il giovane compagno di squadra della Red Bull KTM Factory Racing di Jonass, Jorge Prado, ha sfidato il #41 la scorsa settimana e ha finito solo 3 decimi di secondo dopo Jonass in Gara 2. Prado vorrebbe vincere a Red Sand e avrà sicuramente i tifosi dalla sua parte in questo fine settimana in quello che sarà il suo primo GP di casa.
Secondo nella classifica MX2 dopo due week-end coerenti di corsa con un secondo in Patagonia e un 3° in Europa è Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Thomas Kjer Olsen. Olsen ha una vittoria GP a suo nome e ha vinto lo scorso anno su una superficie simile, la sabbia del circuito di Kegums della Lettonia.
Honda 114 Motorsports’ Hunter Lawrence ha avuto un impressionante gara inaugurale della stagione, ma ha faticato a trovare la velocità necessaria per competere per il podio o anche una top five la scorsa settimana. Lawrence rimane un pilota altamente capace di vincere in Spagna, ma sarà interessante vedere come si comporterà dopo lo scadente GP lo scorso fine settimana.
Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Thomas Covington penalizzato da brutte partenze all’inizio della stagione, ma è riuscito a mettere insieme una bella gara di qualificazione a Valkenswaard solo pochi giorni fa. Covington e il suo team si sono allenati e testato sul circuito RedSand durante l’inverno e può sorprendere di nuovo quando scende il cancello.
Altri piloti da guardare sono la coppia di piloti Yamaha ufficiale Kemea MX Team, Ben Watson e Jago Geerts, entrambi avevano forti risultati finora, per Watson un 4° in Argentina e Geerts ha preso 4° in gara 1 a Valkenswaard.
La delegazione spagnola in MX2 è più di attraente con 3 spagnoli che si uniscono a Jorge Prado nel loro GP di casa, F & H Racing Team Ruben Fernandez, Husqvarna Motorsport 8Ottobiano Iker Larranaga, e il Team Yamaha Ausio Yamalube Maxxis’ Jorge Zaragoza.

MXGP Ready for Red Sand Debut
RED SAND (Comunitat Valenciana, Spain) 21 March 2018 – MXGP has set sail for Spain as the 3rd round of the 2018 FIM Motocross World Championship moves from the cool climate of the Valkenswaard to the warmth of Red Sand. The MXGP of La Comunitat Valenciana will be the first ever MXGP to take place at Spain’s Red Sand MX & Enduro Track, a facility that is a training favorite for many MXGP and MX2 teams situated in Valencia Region. Last time the FIM Motocross World Championship was set to take place in Spain it was back in 2016 at the circuit of Talavera de la Reina.
The new stop on the calendar will also host the first round of the European Motocross Championship’s EMX250 series along with the second round of EMX300 Presented by FMF Racing. The weekend will be full of action with 92 riders entered into the EMX250 class, 39 in EMX300 presented by FMF Racing, and 79 between the two premier classes of MXGP and MX2 including MXGP and MX2 Red Plate holders Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Pauls Jonass.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings has 2 overall wins in 2 races during 2018 but teammate and reigning MXGP Champion Antonio Cairoli has been right alongside. This weekend we may very well see another great battle between the front two although Herlings may have the slight advantage as he has trained on the sandy circuit while for Cairoli it will be a new experience.
One rider for the pair to watch out for is Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Jeremy Van Horebeek who had impressive speed in both Argentina and last week before a crash ended his weekend finishing 10th overall.
Van Horebeek’s Monster Energy Yamaha MXGP teammate Romain Febvre has been consistent so far with two top 5 finishes. In a season that has started much better than last one, Febvre will be shooting for a podium come Sunday.
Team HRC’s Tim Gajser, who was the winner of the 2016 edition of the MXGP of Spain, will compete in his second race back from injury after he showed impressive speed after a month off in Valkenswaard along with pure grit following two crashes finishing 9th and 13th for 9th overall.
Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin appears determined to battle with the likes of Herlings and Cairoli after his first podium at the MXGP of Europe. While Paulin along with many others struggled not to make mistakes at the trying Valkenswaard circuit, he will need to find a faster pace if he wants to contend for the win.
Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle is another rider who has been consistent and currently sits third in the points. Desalle has yet to find the podium but with his speed and ability to have consecutively strong finishes it is not a matter of if but when and the Belgian could very make it happen this Sunday.
Last but not least Marchetti Racing Team KTM’s Jose Butron will join 920 Fly Group’s Ander Valentin as the only MXGP riders to call La Comunitat Valenciana a home GP.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass has won every points paying race so far this year and led every lap after double holeshots at the MXGP of Europe last weekend. With 100 points to his name he already has an 18 point lead in the standings after just 2 rounds.
The young Red Bull KTM Factory Racing teammate of Jonass, Jorge Prado, challenged the #41 last week and only finished 3 tenths of a second after Jonass in Race 2. Prado would like nothing more to win at Red Sand and will definitely have the fans on his side this weekend in what will be his first ever home GP.
Second in the MX2 standing after two consistent weekends of racing with a second in Patagonia and a 3rd in Europe is Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen. Olsen has one GP win to his name but it came last year on a similar surface, the sand of Latvia’s Kegums circuit.
Honda 114 Motorsports’ Hunter Lawrence had an impressive season opener but struggled to find the speed necessary to compete for a podium or even a top five last week. Lawrence remains a rider highly capable of the win in Spain but it will be interesting to see how performs after last weekend’s subpar finish.
Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Covington admitted to struggles at the start of the season but managed to put together a strong qualifying race at Valkenswaard only days ago. Covington’s and his team have trained and tested at the Redsand circuit over the winter and may surprise again when the gate drops.
Others to watch out for are the pair of Kemea Yamaha Official MX Team riders, Ben Watson and Jago Geerts, both had strong result so far this year for Watson a 4th in Argentina and Geerts took 4th in race 1 at Valkenswaard.
The Spanish Delegation in MX2 is more than attractive with 3 other Spaniards joining Jorge Prado in their home GP, F&H Racing Team’s Ruben Fernandez, Husqvarna 8Ottobiano Motorsport’s Iker Larranaga, and Team Ausio Yamaha Yamalube Maxxis’ Jorge Zaragoza.
