GP Argentino rimane a Neuquen?
Le voci prima che le casse fossero arrivate a Neuquen davano il Gran Premio della Patagonia-Argentina in spostamento verso un’altra parte del paese per il 2019, forse Cordoba – sede della finale del Rally Dakar – o più vicino a Buenos Aires. Nella conferenza stampa introduttiva ufficiale di venerdì pomeriggio, il vicepresidente della Youthstream, David Luongo, non è impegnato nel futuro di Neuquen, ma ha dichiarato apertamente che non c’era alcuna volontà di perdere il circuito dalla lista MXGP. “Non possiamo dire nulla ora, ma siamo molto felici di venire qui ed è un posto fantastico con molti spettatori”, ha commentato. “Sicuramente l’Argentina continuerà ad essere un obiettivo e un posto per noi. Dipende sempre dagli spettatori, quindi è troppo presto per dirlo, ma qui siamo molto bravi. “
L’organizzatore locale David Eli si sentì quindi pressato a seguire. “Mi è stata fatta la domanda sullo stato del Grand Prix l’anno scorso dopo alcuni discorsi ed eccoci di nuovo nel 2018. Quindi la mia risposta è la stessa di allora: finiremo l’evento, ci riuniremo con le autorità per fare una valutazione. La crescita dei numeri e del pubblico collegato a MXGP aiuta molto al prossimo evento con gli enti regionali e nazionali e spero che saremo in grado di firmare entro luglio perchè la gara sarà di nuovo qui. “
La FIM ha anche elogiato il livello di coordinamento e presentazione dell’impianto; naturalmente un elemento chiave nel motivo per cui era prevista l’apertura del campionato 2018 (combinata con il clima stagionale). “David è l’organizzatore più modesto del mondo”, ha dichiarato il presidente della CMS Tony Skillington. “L’uomo svolge la sua attività in modo molto silenzioso e molto efficiente e fornisce un prodotto eccellente. Dal primo momento nel 2015 è stato eccezionale e continua ad essere eccezionale. Vorrei che avessimo un evento come questo ogni fine settimana. “
L’evento è la corsa più lunga per la maggior parte delle squadre e può costare nella regione di 30.000 euro anche con l’assistenza merci da Youthstream e Sel. È stato un periodo di crescita per MXGP, una competizione Euro-centrica, fino al Sud America per la prima sortita, ma la posizione e l’atmosfera valevano il viaggio. I piloti hanno affrontato le sessioni di prove libere come un gioco, per la gioia di una folla generosa che ha gustato del primo giorno del weekend. L’entusiasmo della gente del posto (Villa la Angostura è vicino al confine cileno) mostra che lo sport è un faticoso corridore per i brasiliani. Aggiungete il carattere spettacolare del layout, il clima e l’acuto senso di aspettativa, quindi l’Argentina-Patagonia è già candidata per una data nella lista del 2018.

Argentine GP to stay at Neuquen?
Rumours before the crates had even arrived in Neuquen had the Grand Prix of Patagonia-Argentina moving to another part of the country for 2019, possibly Cordoba – site of the Dakar Rally finale – or closer to Buenos Aires. In the official introductory press conference on Friday afternoon Youthstream VP David Luongo was non-committal on the future of Neuquen but openly stated there was no willingness to lose the circuit from the MXGP slate. “We cannot say anything now but we are very happy to come here and it is a great place with a lot of spectators,” he commented. “For sure Argentina will continue to be a target and place for us. It always depends on the spectators so it is too early to say but we are very good here.”
Local organiser David Eli then felt pressed to follow-up. “I was asked the question [on the status of the Grand Prix] last year after some talk and here we are again in 2018. So my response is the same as it was then: we’ll finish the event, get together with the authorities, and make an evaluation. The growth of the numbers and audience connected with MXGP helps a lot for the next event with the regional and national bodies and I hope we’ll be able to sign before July that the race will be here again.”
The FIM were also full of praise for the level of co-ordination and presentation of the fixture; naturally a key element in why it was slated to open the 2018 campaign (combined with the seasonal weather). “David is most unassuming organiser in the world,” said CMS President Tony Skillington. “The man goes about his business very quietly and very efficiently and he provides an excellent product. From the first moment in 2015 it was outstanding and continues to be outstanding. I wish we had an event like this each weekend.”
The event is the longest haul for the majority of the teams and can cost in the region of 30,000 euros even with the freight assistance from Youthstream and Sel. It was a stretch to hike MXGP, a Euro-centric competition, all the way to South America for the first sortie but the location and the atmosphere was well worth the journey. Riders treated the Free Practice sessions as a play ride, much to the delight of a generous crowd that sampled the opening day of the weekend. The enthusiasm the locals (Villa la Angostura is close to the Chilean border) show the sport is a close runner to the Brazilians for fervour. Add the spectacular character of the layout, the weather and the heightened sense of expectation then Argentina-Patagonia is already a candidate for finest date on the 2018 slate.
